The allowance is based on a book’s normal-speed duration—not the time you spend listening—belongs to the Premium Individual subscriber or the manager of a Premium Family or Duo plan, and resets with the billing period. Unused included hours do not carry over.
Who gets included audiobook hours?
Spotify’s US subscriber-catalog guidance, checked October 7, 2026, lists 15 monthly hours for Premium Individual subscribers and the plan manager on Premium Family or Premium Duo. Premium Student is not eligible under that guidance.

On Family and Duo, the allowance is not automatically shared among members. The manager controls the plan’s included time and can arrange extra time for members through the available add-ons or top-ups. A member can ask the manager for more.

How Spotify counts listening time
Spotify deducts a book’s normal-speed duration from your allowance. Playback speed changes how long listening takes in real time, but not the number of hours charged. For example, a five-hour audiobook played at 2× uses five allowance hours, even though it takes about two and a half hours to hear.
Listening to a book or part of a book again deducts its duration again. A title you separately unlock for paid access does not use the included monthly allowance.
When does the allowance reset?
Included hours renew with the subscription billing period. Unused included time expires at that reset rather than rolling over. Check Spotify’s Audiobook listening time view for remaining hours and the next renewal date.

What can you do when the hours run out?
Spotify’s US guidance describes two ways to add listening hours, plus the option of unlocking an individual book. The account’s Add-ons and listening-time pages show which choices are currently available and their prices; Spotify’s guidance does not establish one universal price.
| Option | How it works | Timing and account details |
|---|---|---|
| Audiobooks+ add-on | Recurring extra monthly hours, used after included plan hours. | Hours reset monthly. Billed with Premium; available options and price are account-specific. |
| One-time top-up | Extra hours for occasional listening, used after included hours and Audiobooks+ hours. | Spotify’s US purchase guidance says top-ups remain valid for 12 months from purchase. An eligible subscription is required to use them. |
| Unlock a specific audiobook | Paid access to an individual title rather than more allowance hours. | The unlocked title can be listened to on Spotify and does not draw on included hours. This is access to the content, not ownership of it. |
Choose a recurring add-on for ongoing listening
If you expect to exceed the included allowance regularly, review Audiobooks+ in the account’s Add-ons area. Its hours are used after the included plan hours and reset monthly. For Family and Duo, the manager must arrange extra time for members.
Choose a top-up for occasional extra time
A top-up is a one-time purchase, not a new monthly allowance. Spotify’s US support says it remains valid for 12 months from purchase and is drawn down only after included and add-on hours. It requires an eligible subscription. If Premium is canceled, access to top-ups is removed unless you resume an eligible plan within 12 months; the original expiry date still applies.

Unlock a book if you want that title specifically
A separately unlocked audiobook is an alternative when access to one particular title matters more than adding hours to the monthly allowance. Spotify says the unlocked book does not count against included listening time.

What Family and Duo members should know
The plan manager—not each member independently—handles extra hours for Family and Duo. Members who need more time should request it from the manager. A member who leaves the plan loses access to add-ons and top-ups assigned through that plan. Spotify’s US guidance says those top-ups may be usable again after rejoining or starting an eligible plan, subject to their original expiry.
Spotify Audiobooks Access is a separate US option
Spotify also describes a US-only Audiobooks Access option that includes 15 monthly hours from the subscriber catalog alongside ad-supported music and podcasts, but not other Premium features. It is separate from the Premium plan allowance discussed above. Availability and terms can change, so check the current account page.
Where to check your hours and options
- Open Spotify’s Audiobook listening time view in your account to see remaining time, the renewal date, and any top-up expiry.
- For recurring extra hours, open the account’s Add-ons area and review Audiobooks+ availability and price.
- For a one-time purchase, review the top-up terms shown in your account before buying, including eligibility and expiry.
- For Family or Duo, ask the plan manager to arrange extra time for a member.
This guidance reflects Spotify’s US-facing documentation checked October 7, 2026. Plan eligibility, prices, add-on availability, and catalog contents may differ by market or change over time.
