Start by identifying the console and controller, then use that platform’s pairing or reset procedure. The documented steps here cover Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and PS5 DualSense; Xbox pairing instructions are not verified here, so use current Xbox Support guidance rather than trying another console’s button sequence.
First, identify what is failing
Pairing steps depend on the console and controller model. Before changing settings, check that the controller is intended for your console and has charge. For wireless problems, move it closer to the console and reduce nearby wireless interference if practical.

Also distinguish among three different issues: a wireless controller that will not pair, a controller that is not recognized while physically attached, and a controller that connects but is unsupported by a particular game or controller configuration. The steps below address the documented scenarios for Switch Joy-Con and PS5 DualSense; they are not universal instructions.

Nintendo’s guidance applies when the Joy-Con works while attached to the Switch but does not sync or register as a wireless controller.

- Press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button once, then press another button to turn it on again.
- If it still will not connect, clear the pairing information for wireless controllers and pair the Joy-Con again. Nintendo’s pairing procedure is to open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, hold SYNC on the controller for at least one second, then press L and R together—or SL and SR together—on the controllers being used. Ensure the console has the latest system update.
- Move the controller closer to the console, reduce possible wireless interference, and check that its battery is not low or depleted.
- If the issue happens only in a game, check that the game supports the selected controller configuration and that the player limit has not been exceeded.
Nintendo says that if these checks do not resolve the wireless problem, the Joy-Con may need service. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con wireless pairing troubleshooting.
When Bluetooth audio is connected
Nintendo states that no more than two wireless controllers can be paired to a Switch while a Bluetooth audio device is connected. If you are trying to use more than two, that limit may explain why another controller will not pair. See Nintendo’s Bluetooth audio and controller pairing guidance.

PS5: pair or reset a DualSense
Pair it with the console
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with the USB cable included with the controller.
- Press the PS button. Once the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable to use it wirelessly.
PlayStation says a DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time. If you want to use it with a different PS5, pair it with that console. Follow PlayStation’s DualSense pairing and troubleshooting instructions.

Reset the controller if connection problems continue
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold the reset button in the small hole next to the Sony logo on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 using the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
- If you can operate the console, update the PS5 system software to the latest available version.
Use the included cable first. If it is missing or unsuitable, a replacement must support USB data transfer as well as having the correct connector and compatibility; a USB-C charging cable does not necessarily carry data. If reset does not solve the issue, use PlayStation’s support or repair route.

Xbox: use instructions for your controller model
Xbox-specific console pairing and recovery instructions are not established here. Do not apply the Switch SYNC sequence or PS5 cable-and-PS-button steps to an Xbox controller. Check that the controller is intended for your console and has charge, then follow the current model-specific instructions from Xbox Support.

When to contact support
- Switch Joy-Con: If it still fails to connect wirelessly after Nintendo’s reset, re-pairing, distance, interference, and battery checks, Nintendo says the controller may need service.
- PS5 DualSense: If the official pairing and reset procedure does not resolve the problem, use PlayStation’s support or repair flow.
- Xbox: Follow Xbox Support’s guidance for the exact controller model; the console-specific recovery sequence is not confirmed here.
