Compare savings accounts and deposits by the return you expect over the time you will actually hold the money—not by the headline rate alone. First decide how much access you need, then check whether each rate is fixed or variable, calculate the return after fees and applicable tax, and verify withdrawal terms and deposit protection. There is no single best account across the euro area: offers and tax treatment depend on the country, bank, eligibility and contract.
What changes when interest rates move?
The ECB sets key interest rates for the euro area. As the ECB puts it, “The Governing Council of the ECB sets the key interest rates for the euro area.” The ECB’s key interest rates influence rates banks pay consumers, but the ECB policy rate is not the rate an individual saver receives. Banks set their own offers and may change them at different times or by different amounts.

For context, the ECB’s deposit facility rate was 2.50%, effective 16 September 2026. That is a rate banks may use for overnight deposits with the Eurosystem; it is not a consumer savings-account offer. In the ECB’s July 2026 euro-area household statistics, new deposits with agreed maturity up to one year averaged 2.10%, deposits redeemable at notice up to three months averaged 1.18%, and overnight deposits averaged 0.28%. These are averages for different categories, not current offers, forecasts or guarantees for an individual saver. The ECB’s bank interest-rate statistics provide market context, not a substitute for checking provider contracts.

The access rules determine which rates are meaningfully comparable. The ECB distinguishes overnight deposits, deposits redeemable at notice and deposits with agreed maturity. Use the contract’s terms, not just the product name, to classify a candidate.
#1 Best Overall
Overnight or easy-access deposits
These are generally intended to be accessible on demand. Check whether transfers or withdrawals have limits, fees or processing delays, and whether the rate can change at the bank’s discretion or under a stated benchmark.
Notice deposits
These require you to give notice before withdrawing, according to the contract. Record the notice period and whether an urgent withdrawal is possible, and at what cost or loss of interest.

Deposits with agreed maturity
These commit funds for an agreed term. A fixed rate can provide certainty for that term, but check whether early access is allowed and whether it reduces interest or otherwise carries a penalty. Do not assume a fixed-term deposit will outperform an accessible account: future rates and individual contract terms are unknown.

For every candidate, record the advertised rate and the date you checked it. Establish whether it is fixed or variable, whether an introductory rate expires, and whether a variable rate follows a benchmark or can be changed at the provider’s discretion. Note the reset frequency, when a change takes effect and how the bank notifies customers.
Rank #3
If you choose a variable-rate account, review its change and notification clauses and check the offer again after a policy-rate change. A bank need not adjust a retail rate in lockstep with the ECB. With a fixed-term deposit, weigh rate certainty against the period your money is committed and the early-exit provisions.
Calculate the return for your own holding period
Compare candidates using the same starting balance and time horizon—for example, the amount you expect to deposit and the date you may need it. Use each provider’s stated interest calculation and payment terms, including compounding if applicable. Do not treat an advertised annual rate as the cash you will receive over a shorter period without checking the contract’s calculation method.
Rank #4
Separate gross or nominal interest from the net cash return. Subtract account and transaction fees, then account for taxes that apply to your country and personal circumstances. Tax treatment is not uniform across euro-area countries, so there is no single euro-area-wide after-tax yield. State your assumptions when estimating a return; a variable rate or a change in circumstances can make the actual result differ.
Inflation is a separate measure: it affects what the balance can buy, rather than changing the nominal interest paid under the contract. The ECB distinguishes nominal and real rates, as well as simple and compound and gross and net rates. Its explanation of bank interest-rate statistics helps distinguish these measures.

Check limits, access conditions and deposit protection
Before deciding, check the minimum opening balance, eligible balance bands and maximum balance that earns the advertised rate. Look for account or transaction fees and conditions such as required activity on a linked account. Confirm withdrawal limits, notice, maturity and any early-exit consequences against the current contract.
EU deposit protection is generally up to €100,000 per depositor per bank, with deposits at the same bank aggregated. Identify the legal bank that takes the deposit and the applicable national deposit guarantee scheme, particularly if a product uses a separate brand or is offered through a platform. Include any other deposits you hold at that bank when considering the limit. The European Commission’s overview of deposit guarantee schemes explains the EU framework.
A practical comparison checklist
- Set your access need. Decide when you might need the money and how much flexibility is essential.
- Classify each candidate. Use the contract to identify an overnight, notice or agreed-maturity deposit.
- Record rate terms. Note the advertised rate, whether it is fixed or variable, any introductory period, reset terms and the date checked.
- Model one comparable scenario. Use the same balance and holding period for each candidate; apply the provider’s interest terms, fees and your applicable tax treatment.
- Check constraints. Record minimums, maximums, balance bands, withdrawal rules, notice, maturity and early-exit consequences.
- Verify the institution. Identify the legal bank and national guarantee scheme, then aggregate your deposits at that bank against the protection limit.
- Recheck before applying. Confirm the current offer and contract terms, since rates and conditions can change.
What ECB averages can—and cannot—tell you
ECB euro-area averages can show how rates differ across deposit categories and provide dated market context. They cannot tell you which provider will pay you most, whether you qualify, what you will receive after tax, or whether an account suits your need for access. Make the final comparison between current contracts available to you in your country of residence.
