1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA paid sports subscription does not guarantee access to every live game. Leagues and teams divide broadcasting rights by event, market, platform, and time window, so a service may have the right to show a game in one place but not another. A blackout is usually the result: the service withholds a live telecast because another broadcaster or distributor holds protected rights for that viewer’s location or that game’s broadcast window.
To find where a specific game is available, check the league’s current schedule or game-availability locator for your location, then confirm the listed local or national broadcaster and the devices it supports. The right route depends on the exact game, date, country, and market—not simply on which sports subscriptions you pay for.

What is a blackout?
A sports blackout is a restriction that prevents a service from showing a live game to a viewer in a particular place or during a particular broadcast window. It is generally a rights restriction, not a technical failure and not necessarily a punishment for failing to subscribe. A service may carry the game elsewhere, or offer it later as a replay, while being unable to show it live in the affected market.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ESPN Fan Support explains that blackouts protect the primary rightsholder under league, conference, and local agreements. Its April 2, 2026 guidance says blackouts apply to telecasts sold regionally or locally under those agreements. The NBA describes League Pass restrictions as protecting exclusive rights held by local and national content providers. The exact contract terms differ, but the consumer-facing result is similar: one outlet has the relevant live rights in a territory or window, and another service must restrict access there.

A blackout can therefore affect a subscriber who has paid for a league package, a streaming service, or a bundle. The subscription grants only the access its current terms and rights allow; it does not automatically supersede another broadcaster’s local or national exclusivity.
How sports broadcasting rights are divided
Rights are licensed for particular events, audiences, places, platforms, and time periods. A league package may cover many games without covering every distribution window. A team’s local or regional broadcaster can have rights in an assigned market, while national broadcasters and streaming services carry selected games across a wider area. Distribution can change by league, season, country, and individual game.
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission’s March 2026 Federal Register notice describes the Sports Broadcasting Act as allowing NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL teams to pool certain television rights and sell them in packages. Leagues and teams also make agreements with national video distributors, and local or regional rightsholders may have separate territorial rights. These arrangements explain why a game can be available on one service nationally, another service locally, and a league package outside the local market.

Local, in-market, and out-of-market
“Local” or “in-market” generally means the viewer is within the broadcast region assigned to a team or its local distributor. “Out-of-market” means the viewer is outside that designated region. NFL Support uses this distinction in its NFL+ guide. The market is not necessarily the nearest city or a simple radius from the stadium: use the league’s location or ZIP-code tool, or check the local listings for the address where you will watch.
Local and national windows can overlap
A game may be subject to a local arrangement, a national broadcast, or both in different ways. For example, a league package may offer out-of-market games but exclude a nationally televised matchup or a local team’s game. A national broadcaster may carry a selected game widely while a local station has a separate role in its market. The exact rule is service- and game-specific, so a package name alone is not enough to establish that a particular live telecast is included.
How a service determines your location
Streaming services use location information to apply their territorial rights. ESPN says it determines blackout location by IP address in its blackout explainer. NBA League Pass says restrictions can change when the device location changes. A location check may therefore depend on the network or device being used, and a phone on mobile data may be identified differently from the same phone on home Wi-Fi.

If an app says a game is blacked out, that message may reflect the location the service has detected rather than the address you believe it should be using. A stale app or browser session, stored data, or a location error can also complicate a check. Do not assume that an error means the contract restriction does not apply, or that changing a network setting is a legitimate way to bypass it. Resolve incorrect location results through the service’s support process.

The following examples illustrate why there is no universal blackout rule. The details below are tied to the named service and the cited guide’s territory and date; check the current listing before relying on them for a particular game.
| Service or league guide | What the guide says | What to check for a specific game |
|---|---|---|
| NBA League Pass, United States | The guide updated October 6, 2026 says local NBA team games and all nationally broadcast games are blacked out live. | Use the NBA schedule and ZIP-code check to identify the regional or national viewing alternative. The guide says local US game replays become available three days after the live broadcast; national-game replays are available at 6:00 a.m. ET the following day. |
| NBA League Pass, Canada | The October 6, 2026 guide says nationally broadcast games are blacked out. | Check the Canadian broadcast listing. The guide describes replays as available a few hours after the broadcast; timing may change. |
| NBA League Pass, other countries | The same guide says every NBA game is available live with League Pass in other countries. | This statement applies to NBA League Pass as described in that guide. It should not be generalized to other leagues or services. |
| NFL+ | The NFL regular-season guide dated July 17, 2025 describes live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on phones and tablets, NFL Network games on supported devices, and live audio for every game on supported devices. The service is described as available in the United States, not US territories. | Use Ways to Watch and enter the current ZIP code to check the designated broadcast region and the specific game. Confirm the current-season guide because the cited guide is dated 2025. |
| NHL viewing guide, United States | The guide separates national games from regional games. It lists ESPN+, Hulu, TNT/Watch TNT/HBO Max, and ESPN routes for various US national games; regional-game guidance distinguishes local-market and out-of-market viewers. Some NHL Network regional games are unavailable on ESPN+. | Check the NHL season guide and the team’s local information; the listed platforms are season- and country-sensitive. |
| NHL viewing guide, Canada | The guide lists Sportsnet, Prime Video, and TVA for national broadcasts, and Sportsnet+ / NHL Centre Ice routes for regional games outside the local market. | Confirm the current Canadian listing for the game and location. |
| MLB.TV | MLB Support says certain regular-season, special-event, and postseason games can be unavailable domestically and internationally because of MLB exclusivities. Live audio of all games remains available. | Use MLB’s current game-availability locator. The general support information does not establish specific team territory boundaries. |
These examples are not interchangeable. A blackout exception, replay delay, or device limit described for one league or package does not establish the same rule for another service.

How to find the legitimate viewing route for your game
- Identify the exact event. Note the league, teams, date, start time, and whether you want live video, a replay, or audio. Rights can vary from one game to another, including games in the same season.
- Check the league’s official schedule or availability locator. Use the current ZIP-code or location check where one is offered. The NBA and NFL provide location checks; ESPN directs MLB and NHL viewers to official locators. Make sure the location is where you will actually watch, especially if traveling.
- Find the listed local or national broadcaster. Determine whether the game is a local/regional telecast, an out-of-market game, or part of a national broadcast window. Check the broadcaster’s own listing and confirm whether access requires its app, a pay-TV package, or another supported option.
- Check your package’s limits before subscribing or switching. Confirm whether it includes live video for this game in your market, the device you plan to use, and any replay or audio option. Do not treat “league pass” or “all games” as proof that locally protected or nationally exclusive games are included live.
- For an eligible over-the-air local broadcast, check antenna reception. An antenna may receive a local station if that station carries the game and the signal is usable at your address. It cannot unlock a game carried exclusively by a subscription service or override a contractual blackout.
How to troubleshoot a location error
First, distinguish a rights restriction from a location-detection problem. If the official schedule identifies the game as unavailable in your market, the app may be enforcing the intended rule. If the location appears wrong, use the service’s support steps rather than trying to evade the restriction.
- Compare the app’s location with your current viewing location. If you are traveling, the applicable market may differ from your home market.
- Try a different supported platform or browser. NBA League Pass suggests checking another platform or browser and clearing app or browser data.
- Compare network connections if the service recommends it. NBA suggests comparing Wi-Fi with mobile data; ESPN suggests Wi-Fi when mobile-location errors are possible. A different result is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee of eligibility.
- Contact the service if the detected location remains incorrect. Provide the game, device, app or browser, and the location the service is reporting so support can investigate the specific error.
Does the federal sports blackout rule still apply?
No. The former federal sports blackout rule is distinct from the contract-based restrictions viewers encounter today. The FCC eliminated its rule in 2014. The agency’s March 4, 2026 Federal Register notice states: “Sports blackouts remain subject to private contractual arrangements between sports teams/leagues and their video program distributors.”

Eliminating that federal rule did not cancel private agreements between leagues, teams, stations, and distributors. A modern streaming blackout can therefore remain in effect under a contract even though the historical federal rule is gone.

Why subscriptions do not always add up to every game
Sports rights are spread across services and broadcast windows, so a viewer may need to consult more than one official listing to establish where a full season’s games can be watched. The FCC’s March 2026 notice says NFL games aired on 10 different services in 2025. It also says 20 NFL regular-season games and one playoff game were distributed nationally and exclusively on four streaming services in 2025: Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Peacock, and Netflix. These figures describe the notice’s account of that season, not a guarantee about future distribution.
The same FCC notice cites “some estimates” that watching all NFL games in 2025 could cost over $1,500. That is an attributed estimate, not a price calculated by the FCC or a universal bill: the actual total depends on which games a viewer wants, which services or packages they already have, location, and current subscription terms. Before adding up costs, verify the game list, access method, and current prices for the relevant season.
Quick Recap
What to compare before choosing a viewing option
- Market: Does the option cover local/in-market games, out-of-market games, or both?
- Broadcast window: Are regional telecasts and national exclusives handled differently?
- Country: League packages and territorial rules vary by country.
- Device: Check whether live access is restricted to specific devices. The cited NFL+ guide, for example, specifies phones and tablets for live local and primetime games.
- Live versus replay or audio: A live-video blackout may not mean that replay or audio is unavailable, but the alternatives and timing differ by league and service.
- Current season and total cost: Platform lists and subscription terms can change. Verify the specific schedule and prices rather than relying on an older guide or a broad package description.
