How Digital Yield Works: Interest, Rewards, and the Risks to Check

Crypto yield can come from company lending, protocol staking, pooled participation, or other activities. Learn how each works and what to verify before depositing assets.

Digital yield is not one product or one kind of return. A crypto account may pay you from lending or other company activity; protocol staking earns rewards under a blockchain’s rules; and an exchange “earn” label could describe either—or something else. Before committing assets, find out where the return comes from, who controls your crypto, how you can withdraw, and what could cause a loss.

What “digital yield” means

Digital yield is an umbrella term for returns associated with digital assets, especially cryptocurrency. It does not identify the mechanism, tell you who owes you money, or guarantee that a displayed rate will continue. Two products described with the same word may create very different rights and risks.

In particular, interest, staking rewards, and rewards are not interchangeable. Interest may be paid by a company that uses assets deposited with it. Staking rewards are generated under a proof-of-stake network’s rules for participating in consensus. A platform’s rewards program may use either mechanism, another activity, or a promotional payment. The label alone does not establish the source.

This distinction matters because the risks follow the arrangement. With a company account, you may depend on the company, its borrowers, and its activities to receive assets back. With protocol staking, the network’s rules, validator performance, and withdrawal process matter. A product can also combine these exposures.

How the main types of yield work

Interest-bearing accounts and lending

A company may accept crypto assets from customers and use them in investment activities, including lending them to borrowers. The interest paid to a customer is tied to the company’s investment activity, according to the SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Crypto Asset Interest-bearing Accounts (February 14, 2022). The displayed return is therefore not simply a payment created by holding a coin: it depends on the company’s arrangement and ability to pay.

This can expose you to the company’s conduct and financial condition, borrower defaults, and changes in asset markets. The terms also determine whether the company can lend, reuse, or otherwise deploy assets you provide, and what rights you have if it cannot return them. Read the agreement rather than assuming that depositing an asset is equivalent to leaving it untouched in a personal wallet.

Proof-of-stake rewards

In a proof-of-stake network, participants commit or delegate assets to support validator activity. The protocol determines how participation is recognized and how rewards are distributed. Ethereum’s staking documentation describes staking ETH as a way to participate in consensus and earn ETH rewards. The source of those rewards is different from interest paid by a company using customer deposits.

Operating an Ethereum validator directly is a specific participation model. Ethereum.org’s staking page, updated in 2025, states that an individually operated validator requires at least 32 ETH. That amount is a protocol requirement for that model, not a general minimum for all staking services and not an earnings projection. Pools and services offer other ways to participate, each with its own provider, custody, fee, and withdrawal arrangements.

Validators must follow protocol rules. Misconduct can result in slashing, a protocol penalty that reduces staked assets. Staking is not free of operational risk simply because rewards are determined by network rules; validator performance and the network’s mechanics affect the outcome.

Pooled and liquid staking

A staking pool coordinates validator participation so that users do not each need to run a validator independently. A pool may issue a token representing a claim associated with staked ETH and rewards. The token’s value or reward representation depends on the pool’s design: some approaches reflect rewards through token value, while other mechanics may differ. Pool fees also reduce the amount that reaches a participant.

“Liquid” does not mean that the underlying staked asset can always be withdrawn instantly at face value. A token can be traded in a market, but its market price may differ from the value of the underlying asset. Redeeming through the pool is a separate process and may depend on pool liquidity, provider mechanics, or the protocol’s exit queue. Market liquidity and protocol withdrawal availability are distinct questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Centralized “earn” programs

An exchange or other platform’s “earn” label is marketing language, not a technical description of the source of return. Ethereum’s education material notes that some centralized earn programs may rely on lending, trading, or other activities rather than validators. A customer may therefore face company and counterparty risks even when the program is presented alongside staking options.

Check the product’s disclosures and terms for the actual activity, who holds the assets, whether they can be lent or reused, and the conditions for withdrawal. Do not infer protocol staking from a rewards dashboard, or infer a guaranteed payment from a rate shown in an app.

What to compare before committing assets

Compare products on the same dimensions. A higher displayed rate, by itself, does not tell you whether the arrangement has greater risk, less liquidity, or weaker legal protections.

Question What to establish
Where does the return come from? Protocol rewards, lending, trading, promotional payments, or another activity; identify who pays and what activity or revenue funds the payment.
Who controls the assets? Who holds the crypto and the keys or withdrawal credentials? Can you withdraw directly, or must you rely on a provider? Could the provider use the assets as collateral?
What can cause a loss? Consider price volatility, borrower default, company insolvency, fraud, hacking, protocol penalties, slashing, and smart-contract or governance changes.
How does access work? Look for lockups, exit queues, redemption conditions, pool liquidity, and whether a liquid-staking token might trade away from the underlying asset’s value.
How can returns or terms change? Check provider or pool fees, variable rates, eligibility rules, and the provider’s ability to change terms. The cited official materials do not establish current rates for individual providers.
What legal protections apply? Read the product’s customer-asset and insolvency terms, and check whether the particular offering is registered or exempt where applicable. These questions depend on jurisdiction and product structure.

For every promise in a product description, look for the matching term in the legal agreement. If a rate is described as variable, determine how and when it can change. If a product advertises withdrawal on demand, check for exceptions, queues, pauses, and provider discretion in the agreement. A dashboard or marketing page may not capture those conditions.

Understand custody and what happens if a provider fails

Custody describes who controls access to the assets, often through private keys or passcodes. In a self-custody arrangement, you control the credentials needed to access assets; in a custodial service, a provider controls them or acts as an intermediary. The label “self-custody” does not by itself explain how a staking service, pool, or contract interacts with your assets, so trace the actual control path.

Ask whether assets remain segregated, can be transferred or pledged, and what contractual claim you would have if a company became insolvent. The SEC’s investor materials warn that crypto assets sent to interest-bearing companies are not equivalent to insured bank deposits. A crypto balance shown in an account is not proof that the assets are immediately available or protected from a provider’s failure.

A proof-of-reserves report is not a complete answer to solvency or access questions. The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert explains that proof-of-reserves may be a point-in-time snapshot, may omit liabilities or activity between snapshots, and is not as comprehensive as a financial-statement audit. It should not be treated as assurance that customer funds are safe or available on demand.

A wallet can help a user control private keys in some arrangements, but holding keys does not create yield or remove the risks of the asset, protocol, or service. Ethereum’s staking materials also discuss validator withdrawal credentials and control choices; understand who can use those credentials and how before relying on a custody description.

Liquidity: when can you get the assets back?

Withdrawal access is a separate feature from the advertised return. A lending account may be subject to the provider’s terms and capacity to return assets. Protocol staking may involve an exit process or queue. A pool may have its own redemption conditions, while a liquid-staking token may be sellable only at the available market price. These paths are not equivalent.

Before depositing, map the route from your current asset to spendable assets: which action initiates withdrawal, who must process it, whether a protocol queue applies, and what happens if demand exceeds available liquidity. For a tokenized staking position, distinguish selling the token from redeeming it for the underlying asset. Either route can have delays, costs, or a price different from your expectation.

The SEC’s Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities: Investor Alert (March 23, 2023) cautions investors about claims that they “always retain ownership” and “can withdraw [their] assets whenever [they] like.” Treat those statements as claims to verify against the contract and practical withdrawal mechanics, not as proof of immediate access.

Rates, rewards, and losses are different measures

A displayed APR or APY is a rate presentation, not a full risk description or a promise of a fixed return. It does not, on its own, tell you whether the rate is variable, what fees apply, what assumptions are used, or whether returns are paid in the same asset. In crypto, the asset’s market price can also move independently of the amount of crypto earned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, earning additional units of a token does not ensure that the total holding has increased in value in your preferred currency. A price decline can outweigh rewards; fees can reduce them; and losses from a borrower, provider, protocol penalty, or contract may exceed the rewards received. No current market-wide yield figure is established by the official materials cited here, and protocol reward figures change over time. Do not treat an old network APR display or another product’s rate as a current forecast for your arrangement.

Compare the net return only after identifying the asset in which rewards are paid, applicable fees, rate variability, lockup or exit conditions, and the risks that could reduce principal. If any of those details are missing from the terms, the displayed percentage is not enough to evaluate the product.

Risks to check before you sign up

  • Counterparty and insolvency risk: A company or borrower may fail to meet its obligations, and the customer’s rights depend on the terms and applicable law.
  • Market risk: The asset’s market price can fall even while the account reports rewards.
  • Protocol and validator risk: Staking mechanics, validator performance, slashing, and exit queues can affect assets and access.
  • Technology and governance risk: Smart-contract vulnerabilities or changes to a protocol or pool can affect operation, redemption, or value.
  • Liquidity risk: Withdrawals may be restricted or delayed, and a liquid-staking token may not trade at the underlying asset’s value.
  • Disclosure and legal risk: The product’s regulatory status and customer protections depend on its structure and jurisdiction; a platform label does not resolve that question.

The SEC’s 2023 alert says that lending or staking entities and platforms may be subject to federal securities laws. That is a qualified statement, not a determination that every product is a security or that the same rules apply in every country. Check the status and disclosures of the specific offering in the relevant jurisdiction.

Taxes depend on where you file

Tax treatment is a separate question from how a product describes its rewards. IRS publications address U.S. federal digital-asset and staking tax questions, but they do not determine treatment for taxpayers elsewhere. Even for a U.S. taxpayer, the applicable treatment can depend on the facts and the nature and timing of the activity. Keep records of deposits, withdrawals, rewards, fees, and transactions, then check current guidance or consult a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.

A practical pre-deposit checklist

  1. Name the mechanism. Write down whether the return comes from protocol participation, lending, trading, a promotion, or another identified activity. If the provider will not explain the source, do not infer it from the product name.
  2. Read the controlling terms. Find the clauses governing custody, use or reuse of assets, fees, changing rates, suspension of withdrawals, and what happens in insolvency.
  3. Trace control and withdrawal. Identify who holds the keys or credentials, who can authorize a transfer, and every step and condition between requesting a withdrawal and receiving usable assets.
  4. Identify loss paths. For a company product, assess company and borrower exposure. For staking, assess validator, protocol, slashing, pool, and contract risks. For a combined program, consider both sets.
  5. Check the rate in context. Confirm whether it varies, how fees affect it, what asset rewards are paid in, and whether the figure is current and specific to your eligibility and location.
  6. Check legal and tax context. Verify the product’s disclosures and relevant rules in your jurisdiction, and keep records needed to assess tax obligations.

If the product’s source of return, custody arrangement, or withdrawal conditions remain unclear after reading its terms, you do not have enough information to compare it meaningfully with another option.
