One player can bring one or two Spy teammates, then the group infiltrates timed maps, hacks objectives, downloads data, and extracts files when the selected challenge requires it. There are no fixed hacker, medic, or assault classes: every human player uses the same Spy toolkit, and the team divides duties tactically.
Edition matters in 2026. Ubisoft says the game’s online features, including multiplayer and co-op, are no longer functional. An Xbox listing separately identifies local co-op and shared or split-screen play, so you must verify the exact Xbox release and your hardware before buying. The older PC and Xbox 360 manual describes how the mode was designed, but it does not mean official online matchmaking is still available.

What co-op is in Double Agent
The PC and Xbox 360 manual describes co-op as: “Team up with 1–2 Spies to play various missions against AI Bot Mercenaries.” That sentence establishes the basic format: a human Spy can play with one or two additional human Spies, for a team of up to three, while the opposition is controlled by the game rather than by players using the Mercenary side.

It is a set of challenge missions built around infiltration, hacking, data collection, and extraction. Every human participant is a Spy. The practical roles—scout, cover, hacker, courier, or rescue support—are jobs players choose during a run, not classes selected at character creation.

What the team is trying to do
A challenge places the team on a timed map with colored objectives. Depending on the playlist, you may need to download complete files, assemble files from partial data, or gather as much data as possible before time expires. A run can reward a bronze, silver, or gold medal according to its result. The objective shown by the challenge, rather than a universal co-op rule, determines whether files must be carried to the control drone and secured.
What the AI does
AI Bot Mercenaries patrol the map and protect the systems the Spies are trying to access. They are the common enemy in co-op. Their presence makes the division of attention important: one Spy can watch patrol routes while another works on a keypad or server, but a noisy approach can force everyone to disengage, hide, or change routes.
How a co-op challenge unfolds
1. Select a challenge and enter the timed map
Training Course functions as the tutorial. Other challenges emphasize files or data and apply different scoring rules. Read the objective before moving because “collect data” and “secure complete files” demand different extraction plans. A team that assumes every mode uses the same file requirement can finish with a lower result even after gathering a large amount of data.

2. Find the colored objectives
Spy equipment includes night vision, thermal vision, and a hacking device. Vision modes help a player read patrol patterns and identify a safe route in darkness or through obscured areas. The hacking device can download server data, hack digital locks, and turn lights off. The Xbox 360 user guide also describes wireless hacking of electronic devices and the ability to destroy windows and lights.
Use the device deliberately. Turning off a light can create a safer lane for the whole team, while hacking a server may begin the data objective that triggers the next part of the challenge. Before interacting, check whether a teammate is already covering the approach and whether a Mercenary patrol is about to cross the position.
3. Coordinate the approach
Stealth is easier when players avoid doing the same job at the same time. A scout moves ahead with night or thermal vision, observes patrol timing, and reports a route. A second Spy takes the hacking position and starts the interaction when the area is covered. If a third Spy is present, that player can watch a second route, distract or monitor Mercenaries, or remain ready to recover a file and assist with extraction.

This division is fluid. The player who hacks one server can scout the next room, and the player who provided cover can become the courier. No menu locks a person into a role, so teams should switch duties when a run changes from quiet infiltration to a timed escape.
4. Download, assemble, or secure the objective
Objective handling depends on the challenge. In a files-focused mode, a complete file may have to be brought back to the control drone. In a percentage-based mode, partial downloads can count without being assembled into a complete file. Keep the extraction rule in view before leaving a terminal: having data in the team’s total is not always the same as having a file secured for the score.
5. Extract and review the result
When the mode requires security, the courier carries the complete file to the control drone. Teammates should clear the route rather than sprint independently. Once the run ends, the game records the result and can award a bronze, silver, or gold medal. The medal reflects the selected challenge’s scoring system, so a fast run is not automatically the best run if it leaves required files incomplete.
What each player does
Scout and cover
The scout’s first responsibility is information. Use night or thermal vision to identify patrols, check whether a doorway or objective is exposed, and signal when the hacker can begin. Cover means more than standing nearby: watch the angle from which a Mercenary could interrupt the interaction, keep an escape lane open, and warn the team before moving a patrol or switching off a light.
Cover is especially valuable during a long download. If the hacking player must remain at a server, the covering Spy can reposition to see the approach and then guide the team away if the route becomes unsafe. Avoid triggering a fight merely to protect a teammate; a quiet retreat often preserves more time and data.

The hacker activates the Spy device on lights, digital locks, servers, and other marked objectives. The task is not a separate class or loadout. Any Spy can perform it, but one player should clearly announce when an interaction has started so the others know to protect that position.

Positioning matters. Progress is faster when the hacker is positioned well, so take the safest workable angle rather than starting an interaction from an exposed corner. If a light can be disabled before a server download, do that first when it improves the team’s approach.
Courier and extractor
The courier handles a complete file when the challenge calls for physical security at the control drone. This player should not disappear far ahead of the group. A file carrier who reaches extraction alone can be forced to abandon the objective if the route is blocked, while a nearby teammate can distract, cover, or redirect the approach.
Courier duty can rotate. If the original carrier is caught in a bad position, another Spy can recover the file and continue, provided the challenge still allows the team to secure it. Treat the return route as a separate phase of the mission: patrols may have shifted, and the safest entry route may no longer be the safest exit.

The third duty is whatever the current run needs. A support Spy can monitor a second corridor, retrieve a dropped or abandoned objective, distract a Mercenary, or rescue a teammate from a failed approach. Players can swap the single carried gadget at the gadget stock, allowing the team to adapt instead of restarting solely because the first gadget choice no longer fits the map.
Some editions or challenge situations may also allow support actions such as healing or concealing movement. These are tactical possibilities, not guaranteed class abilities; the available action is determined by the edition and the equipment shown in that challenge.
Challenge modes and how their scoring differs
The names below describe the challenge rules documented for the Double Agent co-op and challenge playlists. They should not be treated as interchangeable versions of one objective.

Files Race and 25% Max are the clearest examples of team-oriented handling because they refer to complete team files. Maximum Percentage changes the priority to total data. Double Agent and Best Agent are the important exceptions to the word “co-op”: the Spies enter the same bot-filled environment, but they can compete with one another for the data or file result.

Co-op is not Versus mode
Double Agent also has a Versus design, and confusing it with co-op leads to the wrong expectations. In Versus, human Spy players infiltrate against human players using Upsilon Mercenaries. Spies hack objectives and return two complete files; Mercenaries protect systems, track intruders, and eliminate them.

If you want to play a Mercenary, you are looking for Versus, not the co-op challenge playlist. If you want to work with friends against computer-controlled guards, you need the co-op side and a compatible edition.

PC and Xbox 360 manual design
The 2006 PC and Xbox 360 manual documents the same basic co-op concept: one Spy plus one or two additional Spy teammates against AI Bot Mercenaries. It is useful for understanding team size, equipment, and challenge objectives, but it is historical documentation rather than a guarantee that every service still operates.
Online play today
Ubisoft’s current product page states: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” That means you should not plan around official online matchmaking, invitations, or online co-op working as it did at launch. A used copy or an old installation does not restore a discontinued service.
Local and split-screen claims
The Xbox storefront separately lists local co-op and shared or split-screen capability for its Xbox listing. Because listings and compatibility can differ by release, console generation, and account or hardware setup, verify the exact product page and test the local mode before assuming two or three players can join. The available evidence establishes a local-play listing for the Xbox version; it does not establish equivalent local support for every PC edition.

Checklist before purchasing or setting up
- Confirm whether your copy is the PC release or the Xbox release documented by the manual.
- Check whether you need local play, because official online multiplayer and co-op are no longer supported.
- For Xbox, verify that the specific listing identifies local co-op or shared/split-screen play.
- Confirm that you have enough controllers and the correct console or compatible hardware for the edition you own.
- Do not buy the game expecting to switch into a human-controlled Mercenary in co-op; that belongs to Versus.
Practical team plans
Two-player approach
With two Spies, assign one player as the forward scout and cover while the other operates the hacking device. After the download, the hacker can become the courier and the scout can lead the return route. This arrangement keeps both players useful without pretending that one is permanently a support class.
For Files Race, agree in advance who carries the complete file and where the control drone route begins. For Maximum Percentage, stop treating every terminal as a delivery run: divide the map, collect high-value data, and leave before a long detour costs more time than it earns.
Three-player approach
A third Spy can watch a second angle or patrol lane while the first player scouts and the second hacks. In 25% Max, that player can track quarter-file pieces and call out which objectives complete the two required files. During extraction, the third player should stay close enough to cover the courier rather than wandering off to chase an unrelated terminal.

When a run goes wrong
Do not automatically restart after one detected movement. First decide whether the challenge rewards complete files, total data, or an individual result. A team pursuing total percentage may salvage the run by taking a nearby objective and withdrawing, while a Files Race team may need to protect the carrier and preserve the completed file. Swap the gadget at the gadget stock if the current tool no longer supports the route, then reassign scout and hacker duties.
Common misunderstandings
“Is there a dedicated hacker?”
No. Hacking is a duty any Spy can perform with the Spy device. Teams create a temporary hacker role so the interaction is protected, but the game does not lock one player into it.
“Does every mode require complete files?”
No. Files Race requires as many complete files as possible, 25% Max requires two files assembled from quarter-file objectives, and Maximum Percentage scores total data without requiring complete-file security. Double Agent and Best Agent add individual competition to the challenge result.
“Why can’t I find online co-op?”
Ubisoft currently lists online features as unsupported and multiplayer and co-op as no longer functional. Look for an edition’s documented local capability instead of assuming that an online setup problem is caused by your router.
“Can I play as a Mercenary with my co-op partner?”
Not in the co-op format described by the manual. Co-op places the human players on the Spy side and uses AI Bot Mercenaries as opposition. Human Mercenaries are part of Versus.
Bottom line
Double Agent co-op is a flexible three-Spy challenge system: one to three human Spies share stealth, hacking, data collection, and extraction duties against AI Mercenaries. The right plan depends on the challenge’s scoring rule—complete files, assembled partial files, total data, or individual competition. Treat online play as discontinued, and verify the exact Xbox local-play listing or edition support before expecting co-op to work.
