In Splatoon 3, firing your weapon does more than threaten opponents: it paints terrain your team can swim through. Ink is both ammunition and a way to change movement, access and control of the map, so even shots that miss a rival can help your team.
How does ink change the way Splatoon plays?
Most shooters treat the ground mainly as the space where combat happens. In Splatoon 3, the surface is part of the contest. Weapons splat opponents, but they also coat floors and walls in a team’s color. Nintendo’s official gameplay guide explains that players can change into Swim Form to travel quickly through their own ink.

That creates a tactical loop: paint a route, swim along it, and use the movement it enables to reach another part of the map or support teammates. A shot aimed at the ground can therefore matter without hitting an opponent. It can open a path, help a teammate move, or replace enemy-colored turf with your team’s color.

Friendly ink changes movement
In Swim Form, players can move quickly through their team’s ink, climb inked walls, pass through fences and refill their ink tank. Remaining still while submerged in friendly ink can also make a player difficult to see. These are practical benefits of painting surfaces, not just visual effects. See Nintendo’s gameplay guide for the mechanics.

Enemy ink makes routes harder
The other team’s ink impedes movement and usually raises the risk of being splatted, according to Nintendo’s beginner tips. Covering enemy-painted ground with your own color can reclaim space while making it more useful to your team. Inking is consequently a form of map control as well as a way to score in modes that count painted territory.
What is Turf War, and why do other modes change the value of ink?
In Turf War, two teams try to cover more ground in their own color. Repainting enemy turf both increases your team’s painted area and removes that area from the opponent’s share. Nintendo describes Turf War as a four-versus-four mode in its launch announcement.
Other rules give ink a more specific job. Nintendo lists Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker and Clam Blitz as Anarchy Battle modes in its gameplay guide. In Splat Zones, teams compete to control a marked area by covering it with their ink. The other modes have distinct objectives, so painting the whole map is not automatically the priority: the useful patch of ground depends on the task. Consult the in-game rules for current scoring details.

Weapon choice changes how a player distributes ink and contributes to movement, combat and objectives. Nintendo’s weapons and gear guide describes broad class roles, not a ranking of which class is best.

| Weapon class | How it distributes ink | Broad role described by Nintendo |
|---|---|---|
| Shooters | Steady streams | Versatile weapons for medium-range fire and quick turf inking |
| Rollers | Push across the ground or flick ink outward | Broad, quick ground coverage |
| Stringers | Bow-like shots | Medium-to-long-range style |
| Splatanas | Short-range ink slinging | Close-range style |
Each loadout combines a main weapon with a sub weapon and a special. Specials become available after enough turf has been inked. That structure makes weapon choice about more than firing style: it affects coverage, reach and close-range pressure, as well as how a player helps create routes or contest an objective. The class descriptions do not establish current balance, superiority or win rates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why painting can help the whole team
Friendly ink gives teammates routes they can use to move quickly, while reclaiming enemy-painted space can make parts of the map safer and more accessible. In Turf War, Nintendo’s beginner advice recommends reclaiming enemy-painted ground and checking the map to see how much territory each team has covered. Those choices connect personal painting to team movement and the mode’s scoring rules; the best target depends on where teammates need to go and what objective is active.
