What each Sony sound control does
Noise Canceling reduces some outside sound
Noise Canceling is intended to make listening less interrupted by surrounding noise. Sony says it is most effective against low-frequency sounds, such as vehicle noise or air conditioning, but it cannot completely cancel every sound. Ambient Sound Mode lets outside sound through
Ambient Sound Mode is for hearing more of your surroundings instead of reducing them. In the interface covered by Sony’s over-ear instructions, the app’s ambient pickup level runs from 1 to 20; a higher number means more outside sound is picked up. Sony also describes Auto Ambient Sound, which adjusts pickup automatically according to surrounding noise. The exact controls and their availability depend on the model and operating system.

Adaptive Sound Control can change noise cancelling and ambient sound level based on detected activity. Sony’s examples include standing still, walking, running, and riding a train. You can assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off to each detected action. The Sound Connect app can also switch settings at configured places using the smartphone’s location information.

Adaptive NC Optimizer is a separate feature
Adaptive NC Optimizer is not the automatic activity-based mode selector. Sony describes it as fine-tuning noise cancelling based on surroundings, headphone fit, and air pressure. Its purpose is to optimize noise cancelling, rather than choose between Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, and Off.

Set up Adaptive Sound Control or change modes manually
Sony’s current over-ear instructions use the Sony | Sound Connect app, but button placement and exact menu steps vary by model and operating system.
- For activity-based switching: Open Sound Connect, go to Adaptive Sound Control, and turn it on. Assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off for each activity you want the headphones to recognize.
- For place-based switching: In Adaptive Sound Control, register a learned or mapped place. Allow Sound Connect to access the phone’s location, including precise location, or location switching may not work.
- To adjust ambient pickup: In the supported over-ear interface, adjust Ambient Sound Mode from 1 to 20. Higher values increase ambient sound pickup.
- To switch modes yourself: Turn Adaptive Sound Control off, then use the headphone’s Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button or the model’s app controls.
Why the mode may change unexpectedly
If the headphones switch between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound or play a notification tone, Adaptive Sound Control may have changed the setting after detecting an activity or configured location. On models with touch controls, an accidental sensor press is another possible cause. Check the Adaptive Sound Control assignments and location settings first; if you prefer to prevent automatic changes, turn the feature off and use manual controls. What to check when noise cancelling seems weak
Confirm the selected mode
Check that Noise Canceling is selected and that Adaptive Sound Control has not switched the headphones to an ambient setting.
Check fit on WF-1000XM5 earbuds
Sony’s WF-1000XM5 guidance recommends wearing the earbuds securely and trying the ear-tip size that fits best. An unsuitable seal can significantly affect noise-cancelling performance. If mode selection and fit are correct, follow Sony’s troubleshooting steps for that specific model rather than assuming the headphones are defective.
Keep expectations realistic
Noise cancelling does not remove every sound, even when the mode is selected correctly. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 troubleshooting page gives model-specific checks and explains this general limitation.
