Before troubleshooting, record the failure and back up your files
Note whether the PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10, the update identifier if shown, the complete error code, and the stage where the failure occurs. Those details help narrow down the troubleshooting branch; a code by itself does not establish what went wrong.
Microsoft Support advises backing up personal files before trying its troubleshooting steps. Copy important files to an external drive or another safe location before continuing.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting with the built-in troubleshooter. In Windows 11, use the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help, or open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. In Windows 10, the route is Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Labels can vary by release; follow Microsoft’s current Windows Update troubleshooter instructions if your screen differs.

- Run the troubleshooter and follow its prompts.
- Restart the PC when it finishes or asks you to.
- Open Windows Update and check for updates again.
Check the common causes before trying advanced repairs
Before more involved steps, confirm the basics. These checks are reversible and can resolve interruptions that prevent an update from downloading or completing.
- Keep a laptop plugged into power and connect to a stable internet connection.
- Use an account with administrator access.
- Disconnect nonessential external devices, such as docks or storage devices, while leaving essential keyboard, mouse, and display hardware connected.
- Check that the date, time, and time zone are correct and synchronized.
- Check available storage. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page gives at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS upgrade; those figures apply to the specified upgrade cases, not as a universal requirement for every Windows Update. Check Microsoft’s current Windows update and storage guidance for your update type.
- If the error points to a driver, check relevant driver updates with the device’s manufacturer.
After making a relevant change, retry Windows Update and restart if prompted. Microsoft’s general update troubleshooting guide covers these checks and version-specific error codes.

Choose a next step from the error code
Microsoft lists possible causes and troubleshooting routes for specific codes. They are not definitive diagnoses: the same code does not guarantee the same underlying problem on every PC.

Clear the update cache only if the error points to it
If the troubleshooter and basic checks have not helped and the issue appears related to update files or cache, Microsoft’s cache-reset procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again. Follow the current steps on Microsoft’s troubleshooting page. Clear the contents inside that folder as instructed; do not delete unrelated system folders or improvise with other files. Then check for updates again.
Use DISM and SFC for possible system-file problems
System-file repair is a later step, not a first response to every failed update. Microsoft documents running DISM and then System File Checker from an administrator Command Prompt. DISM normally uses Windows Update to obtain repair files, so it may not work as intended if the update client itself is broken.

- Follow Microsoft’s current instructions to run DISM, then run
sfc /scannow. - Restart if prompted, then check Windows Update again.
Use Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the exact commands and the alternate repair-source method for cases where the Windows Update client cannot supply files. These commands are not guaranteed to fix every update error.

If the update continues to fail, keep the exact code, update name or KB number, Windows version, and failure stage for Microsoft support or your organization’s IT administrator. Do not treat a clean installation as a routine next step: it is a major escalation that can remove data, so it requires a verified backup and careful preparation.

What Windows 10’s end of support means
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. An existing PC does not stop working, but troubleshooting cannot restore the ended support lifecycle.
