How Shoo! Locks Mac Apps Behind Touch ID Without Accessibility or Screen Recording Access

Shoo! adds authentication before selected Mac apps appear, using Touch ID, Apple Watch, or an optional separate password. Here’s what its permission claim and security limits mean.

Shoo! is a third-party Mac app locker that asks you to authenticate before a selected app appears. Its developer says it can use Touch ID, Apple Watch, or an optional separate backup password, without requesting Accessibility or Screen Recording access. “Without a single permission” is the developer’s description of those system permissions—not a claim that the app uses no system APIs or entitlements.

What Shoo! does—and what it does not do

macOS does not include a built-in feature for locking individual apps. Shoo! is a separate utility intended to add that step to apps you choose, such as Messages. The vendor describes a flow in which the protected app does not appear until authentication succeeds, and says it checks again when you switch back to the app. Its guide says Shoo! ends the protected app’s process and reopens it after authentication. These are vendor descriptions, not independently verified behavior. Shoo!’s guide to locking an app on a Mac

How Touch ID can work without Accessibility or Screen Recording access

Shoo!’s product page says it does not request Accessibility or Screen Recording permissions, which some app-locking approaches may rely on. The distinction matters: those permissions grant broader access to interact with or capture activity on the Mac. Shoo!’s stated approach instead uses Apple’s LocalAuthentication framework to request biometric authentication. Apple’s documentation explains that an app can invoke Touch ID and that the system asks the user to present a finger. It also distinguishes Touch ID from Face ID: Touch ID does not require the comparable usage-description key required for Face ID. Apple’s LocalAuthentication documentation

This makes Shoo!’s permission claim plausible, but Apple’s documentation does not independently confirm Shoo!’s implementation or every entitlement the app may use. Read “without a single permission” as the vendor’s claim about not requesting Accessibility or Screen Recording access—not as proof that Shoo! requires no user consent or system capabilities whatsoever.

What app locking can—and cannot—protect

An app lock adds privacy friction when someone can access an already-unlocked Mac: they may have to authenticate before opening a protected app. It is not equivalent to securing the whole computer. Shoo!’s terms warn that someone with administrator access may be able to circumvent the protection and say the software is not a substitute for full-disk encryption or the Mac’s system password. The terms also state: “The Software is provided "as is."” Shoo! terms of service

Use FileVault and a strong Mac login password to protect data at the device level. Treat an app locker as an additional, app-specific barrier, not a hardened security boundary against an administrator or someone who controls the account.
