Semiconductor equipment companies make money first by selling highly specialized machines to chip manufacturers, then by supporting those machines for years with service, spare parts, software, upgrades and related products. New-system sales can be large but cyclical because fabs buy equipment when they add capacity or move to a new process technology. The installed base creates follow-on revenue after installation, but that revenue is not automatically a universal subscription stream: suppliers report different mixes, products and contract structures.
So, what do semiconductor equipment companies sell? They sell the production tools that deposit and remove materials, pattern and clean wafers, inspect defects, measure dimensions, control processes and support advanced packaging. The exact mix differs by supplier. Understanding those differences is essential before treating any company’s revenue split as representative of the whole industry.

What semiconductor equipment companies sell
A modern chip factory, or fab, is built around hundreds of process steps. Equipment suppliers provide the machines and software used at those steps rather than selling finished chips to consumers. A customer may buy a tool to deposit a thin film, etch microscopic features, clean a wafer, inspect for defects, measure a process result or automate material movement between tools.
The products are capital goods: expensive, technically complex systems purchased by chipmakers and other manufacturers. They must meet a customer’s process specifications, operate reliably in a controlled fab environment and be supported for years. That combination makes the initial sale only one part of the commercial relationship.

| Product or capability | What it does in a fab | How it contributes to supplier revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Deposition | Places controlled layers of material on a wafer. | New systems, process options, upgrades, service and replacement parts. |
| Etch | Removes selected material to create device structures. | New systems and continuing support for installed tools. |
| Cleaning | Removes contaminants between manufacturing steps. | Equipment sales plus parts, field service and upgrades. |
| Inspection and metrology | Finds defects and measures dimensions or other process results. | Inspection and measurement systems, software and service contracts. |
| Process control | Uses measurements and analytics to keep production within specification. | Software, analytics, integration and related hardware and support. |
| Advanced packaging | Connects and packages dies and other components after wafer processing. | Packaging systems, applications support and lifecycle service. |
| Factory automation | Moves wafers and coordinates manufacturing equipment. | Automation software, integration and support offerings. |
These categories overlap in practice. A single supplier may sell both a physical tool and the software, consumables or service needed to operate it. Another may concentrate on a narrower process-control specialty. Comparing companies therefore requires more than comparing total sales.
The four main revenue streams
1. New equipment systems
The largest and most visible stream is the sale of new systems. Customers purchase tools when they build a fab, expand an existing line, increase output or adopt a more advanced manufacturing process. A system sale can include the core machine, options, installation, process qualification and customer-specific configuration.
Lam Research describes its systems revenue as new leading-edge deposition, etch, clean and other wafer-fabrication equipment. Applied Materials describes Semiconductor Systems as its largest net-revenue segment and presents a broad portfolio spanning materials engineering, process control and advanced packaging. KLA’s portfolio illustrates a different emphasis: inspection, metrology, process-control software and related services.

A customer can delay a planned fab project, reduce an order or shift spending among process generations. Conversely, a capacity buildout or technology transition can cause several customers to order at once. This creates a cycle in which annual systems sales can rise or fall sharply even when the underlying need for semiconductor manufacturing remains.
2. Service and field support
After a tool is installed, the supplier can charge for field service, preventive maintenance, repairs, technical support and other assistance. Fabs operate continuously and cannot treat production equipment like an ordinary office machine. Downtime can interrupt a tightly scheduled process, so customers value qualified technicians, diagnostic capability and access to approved parts.

Service is a follow-on stream rather than proof that every supplier has a recurring subscription model. Public filings establish that companies sell service and related contracts, but they do not establish one industry-wide service percentage or show that all support agreements renew on the same schedule.
3. Spare parts and consumables
Equipment contains components that wear, become contaminated or must be replaced as operating hours accumulate. Suppliers sell spare parts and, where applicable, consumables matched to their systems. Original suppliers can have an advantage because they understand the tool’s design, qualification requirements and process history.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Parts demand is tied to the size and utilization of the installed base. A fab that postpones new-tool purchases may still need parts for machines already running. The reverse is also possible: if tools are idle, parts usage and service activity can soften.
4. Upgrades, software and related products
Suppliers can extend a tool’s useful life or improve its performance with hardware upgrades, software releases, automation features and process enhancements. Upgrades may help a customer increase throughput, support a new material, improve yield or keep an older platform useful for a different product.
Some suppliers also sell refurbished or non-leading-edge equipment. Lam identifies its Reliant product line and customer support offerings alongside services, spares and upgrades. Applied Global Services includes services, spares, factory-automation software and certain 200-millimeter and other non-leading-edge tools. These offerings address customers that need reliable production capacity without buying the newest platform.

How a typical equipment sale becomes a longer relationship
- Process requirement: A chipmaker defines the layer, feature, defect limit, measurement or packaging task it needs to perform.
- Tool selection: Suppliers demonstrate that their system can meet the process specification, throughput, yield and integration requirements.
- Order and delivery: The customer places an order for a configured system. Timing can depend on factory construction, permits, component availability and the customer’s capital budget.
- Installation and qualification: The supplier installs the tool, connects it to fab utilities and automation, and helps qualify the process.
- Production support: Field engineers, parts and software support keep the tool operating and help diagnose problems.
- Expansion or upgrade: The customer may buy additional systems, add options, upgrade the installed tool or replace it with a newer generation.
This sequence explains why the business combines project-like system sales with a continuing installed-base opportunity. It does not mean every customer follows the same contract or that every dollar after installation is recurring.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy fab investment drives demand
Demand starts with the economics of semiconductor manufacturing. A chipmaker orders equipment when it expects enough demand for chips, when it needs more capacity, or when a new process requires different capabilities. Lam says demand is driven by customer investment in wafer-fabrication capacity, technology advancement and installed-base support. KLA says customer capital spending is influenced by anticipated market demand, government regulation and capacity constraints.
Several decisions can move equipment orders:
- End-market demand: Forecasts for products such as data-center processors, smartphones, vehicles or industrial electronics affect planned wafer output.
- Technology transitions: A new process node, memory generation or packaging approach can require additional or different tools.
- Capacity constraints: Limited wafer capacity can encourage customers to build new lines or add tools to existing fabs.
- Regulation and incentives: Government rules and industrial-policy programs can affect where and when fabs are built.
- Utilization: When existing tools run at high utilization, parts and service activity can increase; when utilization falls, customers may defer purchases and maintenance.
Because customers make these decisions in waves, equipment suppliers are exposed to the semiconductor capital-spending cycle. The exposure is not identical across suppliers: a company focused on memory can experience a different timing pattern from one selling process-control tools across many device types.
What the reported numbers look like
Company filings show the model in concrete terms, but the figures must be kept in their stated fiscal periods and reporting categories.
| Company and period | Reported category | Amount or description | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lam Research, fiscal year ended June 28, 2026 | Total revenue | $23.233 billion | Company-specific fiscal-year revenue, not an industry total. |
| Lam Research, fiscal year ended June 28, 2026 | Systems revenue | $14.885 billion | New leading-edge deposition, etch, clean and other wafer-fabrication equipment. |
| Lam Research, fiscal year ended June 28, 2026 | Customer support-related revenue and other | $8.347 billion | Services, spares, upgrades and the Reliant non-leading-edge product line. |
| Lam Research, fiscal year ended June 28, 2026 | Leading- and non-leading-edge equipment and upgrade market mix | Foundry 54%; memory 39%; logic/integrated device manufacturing 7% | Customer-market mix for the specified equipment and upgrade revenue; it is not the systems-versus-support split. |
| Applied Materials, fiscal 2024 filing | Semiconductor Systems | Largest net-revenue segment | Illustrates portfolio structure; the cited filing is older than the Lam and KLA periods and is not a current like-for-like comparison. |
| KLA, 2026 filing | Revenue source | Primarily product sales and related service contracts | Shows how an inspection, metrology and process-control specialist reports its model. |
Lam’s figures add to approximately its reported total after rounding. They should not be turned into a “typical” industry mix. Each company defines segments differently, and fiscal years do not necessarily end on the same date.

The market-size context
SEMI reported $117.1 billion in global semiconductor equipment billings for 2024, a figure attributed to SEMI’s April 9, 2025 report in a U.S. House committee source. This is a worldwide billings figure for the semiconductor-equipment market. It is not one vendor’s sales, not a 2026 revenue forecast and not a narrowly defined subcategory such as only deposition or inspection tools.
“Billings” also should not be casually treated as identical to recognized company revenue. Orders can be billed before revenue is recognized under a company’s accounting rules, and suppliers can have different fiscal calendars and product boundaries. Use the figure as a market-size anchor, then use each company’s filing for its own reported revenue.
How to compare equipment companies correctly
If you are analyzing suppliers, compare like with like. The following framework avoids the most common mistakes.
Compare tool specialization
Ask whether the company sells lithography, deposition, etch, cleaning, inspection, metrology, process control, packaging equipment or a combination. A process-control specialist may have a different demand pattern and installed-base opportunity from a supplier concentrated in wafer-processing systems.
Separate new systems from support
Look for the company’s definitions of systems, customer support, services, spares, upgrades, software and refurbished or non-leading-edge products. Do not add categories from different filings unless the definitions genuinely match.
Best Value
Identify customer exposure
Check whether the company reports exposure to foundry and logic, memory, integrated device manufacturers or other markets. Lam’s 54% foundry, 39% memory and 7% logic/integrated device manufacturing figures apply to a specified equipment-and-upgrade mix, not all of its revenue.
Align fiscal periods and geography
State the fiscal year end for every number. Also check whether a reported mix is based on customer location, manufacturing location or another geographic definition. Different reporting bases can make apparently similar percentages incomparable.
Examine the installed base
A large installed base can support service, parts, upgrades and software sales, but its value depends on tool age, utilization, customer concentration and the supplier’s ability to support that platform. Installed-base size alone does not prove a particular level of future revenue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What can go wrong in the revenue model
- Capital-spending pauses: Customers can defer fab projects when demand forecasts weaken, reducing new-system orders.
- Technology shifts: A process change can reduce demand for one platform while creating demand for another.
- Customer concentration: A small number of very large chipmakers can make order timing consequential.
- Export and regulatory limits: Rules can affect which tools may be sold to particular destinations or customers.
- Supply-chain constraints: Specialized components and long qualification cycles can delay delivery and revenue recognition.
- Installed-base aging: Older tools may need support, but they can also become uneconomic to maintain or be replaced by newer systems.
These risks cut both ways. A downturn can hurt new-tool sales while service and parts provide some support; a strong upgrade cycle can lift follow-on revenue without requiring an entirely new fab. The balance varies by supplier and period.
The practical answer
Semiconductor equipment companies monetize a lifecycle. They sell a specialized production system, qualify it in the customer’s fab, and then sell the expertise and components needed to keep it productive or adapt it to new requirements. The core engine is still equipment sales, while services, spares, upgrades, software, automation and selected non-leading-edge products broaden the relationship with the installed base.
The business is therefore neither a simple one-time hardware sale nor a uniform subscription model. Its results reflect the interaction of large, cyclical fab-investment decisions with a longer stream of support activity. To understand any individual supplier, start with its tool category, then read how it defines systems and support, identify the customers and markets it serves, and keep every number tied to its stated fiscal period.
