How Scientists Measure Carbon Uptake in Polar Oceans

Polar-ocean carbon uptake is calculated from the difference between seawater and atmospheric pCO2, the rate of gas exchange at the surface, and observations from ships, buoys, floats, satellites and depth profiles. Here is how those measurements become regional estimates—and where uncertainty enters.

Scientists do not read polar-ocean carbon uptake from a single instrument. They estimate air–sea CO2 flux by measuring the partial pressure of CO2 in surface seawater and overlying air, combining that difference with the rate of gas exchange at the sea surface, and filling geographic and seasonal gaps with ships, autonomous platforms, satellites and models.

What “carbon uptake” means in an ocean measurement

In this context, uptake is the movement of atmospheric carbon dioxide into seawater. The measurable quantity is usually air–sea CO2 flux: the amount of gas crossing each unit of ocean surface over a given time. A flux directed from air into the ocean indicates uptake; a flux directed from ocean to air indicates release.

Scientists often describe the exchange with a difference in partial pressure, or pCO2. Surface seawater with a lower pCO2 than the air tends to absorb CO2, while water with a higher pCO2 tends to release it. The direction and size of the flux also depend on how quickly the sea surface exchanges gas with the atmosphere. Wind is therefore a central input, not a minor correction.

The global ocean is estimated to take up approximately one quarter of the anthropogenic CO2 released each year. That is a global statement, not a measurement of the polar oceans’ share. Uptake and release vary by location and time, so a polar estimate must be tied to a named region, season and time span.

The core calculation: pCO2 difference plus gas transfer

An air–sea exchange estimate starts with two pCO2 values:

  • Surface-water pCO2: the partial pressure of dissolved CO2 in the upper ocean.
  • Atmospheric pCO2: the partial pressure of CO2 in the air immediately above the sea.

Their difference establishes the chemical driving force. A gas-transfer velocity, estimated largely from wind speed and adjusted with a chosen gas-exchange scheme, describes how efficiently turbulence moves gas across the interface. In simplified form, the flux is proportional to:

flux = gas-transfer velocity × CO2 solubility × (surface-water pCO2 − atmospheric pCO2)

Reported direction Meaning for the ocean Typical interpretation
Negative under a sea-to-air convention Net movement from air into water Ocean uptake
Positive under a sea-to-air convention Net movement from water into air Ocean release
Positive under an air-to-sea convention Net movement from air into water Ocean uptake

Temperature, salinity, sea-ice conditions, mixed-layer depth and circulation affect how pCO2 readings are interpreted and how representative a surface sample is. Wind affects the transfer velocity, while biological activity can change seawater pCO2 between observations. These supporting measurements are why a CO2 reading alone is not an annual uptake total.

How scientists collect the observations

Ships and ships of opportunity

Automated underway systems continuously draw seawater while a vessel follows its route. The instrument measures surface-water pCO2, while nearby atmospheric measurements provide the air value. Research vessels create targeted transects; commercial vessels can repeat regular routes and extend coverage into seasons when dedicated cruises are unavailable.

NOAA’s Ships of Opportunity (SOOP)-CO2 consortium has collected automated ship-based ocean-carbon observations since 2005. Repeated routes reveal seasonal and regional patterns that a single expedition would miss, although routes still leave large areas unobserved.

An Arctic underway system

During an Arctic voyage aboard Le Commandant Charcot, NOAA/AOML scientist Leticia Barbero, Ph.D., used an underway pCO2 system. Seawater was pumped continuously through the instrument and the observations were transmitted by satellite modem. The operation illustrates a polar-specific limitation: the seawater intake and pumping line must remain free of ice. Ice blockage can interrupt the record precisely when conditions are changing fastest.

CTD profiles and discrete water samples

Underway instruments describe the immediate surface. At stations, a CTD package records conductivity, temperature and depth and carries bottles that close at selected depths. Handheld Niskin bottles can provide additional samples. In the Arctic example, samples extended from the surface to 900 metres.

These profiles add vertical chemical context. They show whether a surface signal is confined to the mixed layer or associated with water below it, but they do not by themselves measure the continuous air–sea flux across an entire region.

Fixed stations, floats and other platforms

Moored buoys can monitor one location through weather that prevents ships from working. Drifting floats and other autonomous platforms extend observations away from shipping lanes. Land-based weather stations supply atmospheric conditions, including winds used in gas-transfer calculations. Orbiting satellites do not directly provide the same surface pCO2 measurement as a shipboard analyzer; they add broad-scale context such as ocean colour, which helps estimate phytoplankton abundance, along with observations of temperature and circulation.

How point measurements become a polar-region estimate

A cruise samples a track, not every grid cell. Scientists therefore turn observations into a gridded field before calculating a regional or global total.

  1. Quality-control the observations. Instrument readings are checked for calibration problems, contaminated seawater, sensor drift and interruptions caused by ice or equipment changes.
  2. Match ocean and atmospheric conditions. Surface-water pCO2 is paired with atmospheric pCO2 and with the temperature, salinity, wind and other conditions recorded at the same place and time.
  3. Map the measured pCO2 field. Direct observations are interpolated onto a grid. NOAA CarbonTracker documentation describes using predictors that include time, location, sea-surface temperature, salinity, chlorophyll and mixed-layer depth.
  4. Calculate exchange for each grid cell. The mapped ocean–atmosphere pCO2 difference is combined with a wind-derived gas-transfer velocity and the selected gas-exchange formulation.
  5. Aggregate only after defining the boundaries. Regional totals depend on the chosen polar boundary, spatial resolution, season and time period. Grid cells without direct observations are model-informed estimates, not hidden measurements.

CarbonTracker CT2026 reports gridded surface-atmosphere flux estimates from January 2000 through December 2025. It is a model product constrained by observations, not a continuous direct measurement of every Arctic or Antarctic location.

Why polar carbon estimates are especially difficult

Sea ice interrupts the observing system

Ice can block seawater intakes, damage exposed equipment or make a planned route inaccessible. An underway record may therefore contain gaps that are operational rather than chemical. Under-ice waters also cannot be treated as though they were sampled as freely as open water.

Winter observations are sparse

Darkness, storms, dangerous ice and limited ship access reduce winter coverage. A record dominated by summer cruises can miss wintertime changes in pCO2, mixing and gas exchange. Interpolation can reduce the gap, but it cannot make an unobserved season equivalent to a directly measured one.

Conditions change rapidly

Melting ice, freshwater input, storms and shifting fronts can alter salinity, temperature and mixed-layer depth over short distances. Two measurements separated by a modest distance or several days may represent different water masses. Wind can also change gas-transfer velocity quickly, even when pCO2 changes little.

Surface exchange is not the same as long-term storage

A measured inward flux tells scientists that CO2 entered the ocean across the surface during the stated period. It does not prove that the same carbon remains stored at depth for decades or centuries. Vertical mixing, circulation and chemical transformations determine what happens after entry. CTD and bottle profiles help evaluate that vertical context, while flux products quantify the surface exchange itself.

What each observing platform contributes

Platform or method Primary information Strength Important limitation
Automated shipboard pCO2 system Continuous surface-water pCO2 along a route High-density measurements along repeated tracks Route, weather and sea-ice access limit coverage
Research-ship CTD and Niskin samples Temperature, salinity and water chemistry by depth Vertical context to interpret surface signals Station-based and intermittent rather than continuous
Moored buoy Local time series of ocean and atmospheric conditions Can continue through periods when ships cannot operate Represents a limited location
Drifting float Autonomous observations away from fixed routes Extends spatial coverage with limited ship support Path and sensor variables differ among deployments
Satellite Ocean-colour and broad environmental context Wide-area view of conditions such as phytoplankton, temperature and circulation Does not replace direct surface pCO2 measurements
Weather station and atmospheric sensors Wind and air-side conditions Constrains gas-transfer calculations Must be combined with ocean observations
Gridded model or data product Regional and global flux fields Combines sparse observations into consistent maps Depends on interpolation, predictors and gas-exchange assumptions

How to compare two polar-ocean uptake estimates

A larger or smaller number is not meaningful until the estimates are placed on the same basis. Check these items in order:

  • Region: Arctic, Antarctic, a named sea, an ice-covered area or an ocean basin.
  • Time span: a cruise, a season, a year or a multi-decade product.
  • Seasonal coverage: whether winter observations are present or largely interpolated.
  • Spatial resolution: the size of grid cells and whether fine coastal features are represented.
  • Platforms: ships, buoys, floats, satellites and atmospheric stations included in the estimate.
  • Measured versus inferred variables: direct pCO2 observations should be distinguished from mapped pCO2 and calculated flux.
  • Gas-transfer scheme: wind product, transfer relationship and treatment of sea ice.
  • Sign convention and units: whether positive means air-to-sea or sea-to-air, and whether the result is reported per area or as a regional total.

Two products can use many of the same observations and still disagree because they interpolate differently, use different wind fields or apply different rules to ice-covered water. Agreement is more persuasive when region, period, method and sign convention all match.

Numbers that need careful qualification

NOAA/AOML cites a target accuracy of 0.2 Pg C yr−1 for data used to constrain sea–air CO2 fluxes in its SOOP-CO2 program. This is a program accuracy target, not a measured annual uptake by the polar oceans or by the global ocean.

The approximately one-quarter global uptake figure likewise should not be converted into a polar percentage. Polar seas can switch between uptake and release across seasons and locations, and their contribution must be estimated for the defined region and period.

A practical checklist for reading a published result

  1. Identify whether the paper reports pCO2, an air–sea flux, carbon inventory or a model output.
  2. Write down the region, dates, season and spatial resolution.
  3. Check which observations were direct and which values were interpolated.
  4. Find the stated sign convention before interpreting positive or negative values.
  5. Look for the wind-based gas-transfer method and treatment of sea ice.
  6. Ask whether the result describes surface exchange only or also evaluates carbon transported below the mixed layer.
  7. Read uncertainty as a property of the complete observing-and-model system, not just of the pCO2 instrument.

The result is strongest when repeated observations, vertical profiles and independent environmental measurements tell a consistent story. Where coverage is thin, the honest conclusion is a constrained estimate with explicit assumptions—not a claim that every square kilometre of polar ocean was directly observed.
