They are not competing formats. Many audio systems, including BirdNET, turn recordings into spectrograms before a neural network analyzes them. Treat every automated result as a candidate that needs listening, visual inspection, and ecological context.
The right choice depends on your question. Spectrogram-led inspection is best for seeing and measuring an unusual call or documenting its structure. AI is most useful when hours or weeks of recordings make manual searching impractical and a model exists for the species, call type, and recording conditions you have.

What a spectrogram shows in an animal call
A spectrogram is a time-frequency display. Time runs left to right, frequency (pitch) runs vertically, and color or darkness represents sound energy. A waveform can show amplitude changes, but a spectrogram also reveals where energy is concentrated in frequency and how that pattern moves.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn a bird song, you might see narrow horizontal bands for steady notes, rising or falling traces for sweeps, and repeated blocks for phrases. A frog pulse, insect trill, whale moan, or mammal call has its own shapes and frequency ranges. Background wind, traffic, rain, and recorder hiss appear as additional patterns that can overlap the target signal.

Questions a spectrogram can answer
- When does a call begin and end?
- Which frequencies contain most of its energy?
- Does the pitch rise, fall, or stay stable?
- How long are notes, pauses, and repeated phrases?
- Are two calls similar in structure, or does one contain extra bands or harmonics?
- Where should you place a selection for measurement, annotation, or later playback?
Measurements are only meaningful when you record the display settings and selection boundaries. Window length, overlap, frequency range, and color scaling change what is visible. A setting that separates brief, high-frequency syllables may blur a long, low-frequency call, so inspect the signal at a resolution appropriate to the event.
What AI adds to call analysis
“AI” in bioacoustics means a family of learned methods rather than one universal detector. A system may detect whether a target sound is present, classify a segment among known species or sound classes, or produce ranked probabilities. Some models consume spectrograms; others use different representations or engineered audio features.
A model can screen thousands of files consistently, return time-stamped candidates, and let a person review a manageable subset. It cannot identify a species that was absent from its training classes, and a high score is not proof that the animal was present.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What controls an AI result
- Training coverage: The model must include the species and, where relevant, the call type (song, alarm, begging call, echolocation, or another vocalization).
- Segmentation: Models usually analyze fixed windows or selected events. A call split across windows, or mixed with another animal, can be harder to classify.
- Recording conditions: Distance, microphone response, clipping, wind, rain, urban noise, and competing calls can change the input enough to reduce reliability.
- Thresholds: Lowering a detection threshold finds more possible events but also increases false alarms. A high threshold misses quieter or unusual examples.
- Metadata and context: Date and location can help systems rank plausible species, but metadata filters do not replace acoustic evidence.
How spectrograms and AI fit together
BirdNET provides a concrete example. Its documented pipeline captures audio at 48 kHz, divides it into three-second segments, converts the signals into two log-scaled Mel spectrograms, and passes those representations to a convolutional neural network. Initial predictions are cross-referenced with local date and location metadata. In this workflow, the spectrogram is the model’s input representation, not an alternative to AI. See the BirdNET project explanation.
An approachable way to think about the relationship is: the spectrogram is the picture of changing frequencies; the model learns recurring patterns in that picture and scores possible labels. This describes the cited BirdNET workflow, not every audio model.
Spectrogram-led inspection versus AI-assisted analysis
| Dimension | Spectrogram-led inspection | AI-assisted analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Visualize call structure and support locating, measuring, and annotating events | Detect or classify target sounds across clips or large collections |
| Typical output | A time-frequency display, measurements, and human annotations | Candidate detections, labels, confidence or probability values, and exported results |
| Strength | A person can inspect context and unusual shapes without being limited to predefined labels | Once a suitable model and workflow are configured, many recordings can be screened rapidly and consistently |
| Constraint | Manual review takes time, and display settings and interpretation affect what is seen | Scope and errors depend on training data, target species, sound conditions, segmentation, and threshold; results require validation |
| Good practice | Listen while inspecting and choose time and frequency resolution that matches the signal | Check model coverage, preserve metadata, review false alarms, and compare with a human-annotated reference set when stakes justify it |
These are complementary workflows, not a universal accuracy contest. No reviewed source supplies a single accuracy figure that fairly compares visual inspection with AI across all species, call types, environments, and model versions.

How do I analyze animal calls? A practical workflow
1. Record or obtain the original audio
Keep the original files unchanged and retain recording date, time, location, sample rate, microphone, gain, and deployment notes. Work from copies when converting formats or applying filters. Metadata is useful for later model settings and for interpreting whether a result is ecologically plausible.
2. Listen before looking for labels
Play the relevant file and note whether the sound is tonal, pulsed, broadband, repetitive, or mixed with other sources. Listening catches artifacts that a visual display can hide, such as clipping, handling noise, or a faint call masked by a louder event.
3. Open a spectrogram and tune the view
Set the frequency limits high enough to include the call but not so high that the event becomes a thin fraction of the display. Adjust time and frequency resolution to the signal: short windows preserve brief syllables, while longer windows improve frequency detail for sustained tones. Change contrast or color scaling so weak structure is visible without making background noise look like a call.
4. Mark and measure candidate events
Select the call boundaries and record duration, minimum and maximum frequency, dominant frequency, intervals, and visible harmonics when those measurements answer your question. Save annotations with the file name and time offset so another reviewer can return to the exact audio.
5. Use AI for volume, not as a substitute for evidence
Choose a detector or classifier whose documented classes match your target. Batch-process recordings, preserve the model version and settings, and export time-stamped scores. For a small collection, manual inspection may be faster than configuring a model; for many hours, automated screening can prioritize segments for review.
6. Validate every important detection
- Confirm that the model includes the species or sound class and the call type you are seeking.
- Check whether the recording’s geography and date fall within the model’s supported context or any available filters.
- Listen to the original audio around the proposed time, not only a clipped export.
- Inspect the corresponding spectrogram for a plausible structure and for interference from other sounds.
- Review a sample of high-scoring and low-scoring candidates, plus false alarms, to understand the detector’s behavior.
- If you need to report performance, compare results with a carefully prepared human-annotated reference set and document how disagreements were resolved.
A score supports a review decision; it does not by itself establish occurrence, abundance, behavior, or ecological impact.

Choosing software for visual review and automation
Raven Lite for learning and basic viewing
Cornell describes Raven Lite as free software for recording, saving, and viewing sounds as spectrograms and waveforms. It is aimed at students, educators, and hobbyists. It is a practical starting point when your goal is to learn the display, listen to events, and make basic selections. Details are on the Cornell Raven Software page.
Raven Pro for measurement and detector workflows
The official Raven Pro documentation describes configurable spectrogram and waveform views, acoustic measurement and annotation, and machine-learning detectors. Example models include BirdNET, katydids, blue whales, and North Atlantic right whales. Selection-review tools support rapid human checking, and detector results can be compared with a human-created truth table to classify true positives, false positives, and false negatives.
Cornell’s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics says Raven Pro is “one of the most widely used programs worldwide for the analysis of animal sounds, used in more than 1000 peer-reviewed scientific publications.” The figure is the Center’s own description and retains its “more than” qualification.

Raven Workbench and its components
Cornell describes Raven Workbench as a suite intended to enhance and replace Raven Pro capabilities. Raven Annotate supports creating and reviewing selections; Raven Expedition supports long-term spectrogram averages; Raven Intelligence applies machine-learning models and supports training sound detector-classifiers; and Raven Compass prepares audio files. Cornell says Raven Pro will eventually no longer be sold or supported, while legacy downloads will remain available. Check current availability and licensing on the official Raven page before committing to a workflow.
BirdNET-Analyzer for batch bird analysis
BirdNET-Analyzer documentation covers open-source machine-learning analysis of bird calls and large recordings. The project supports batch-processing workflows and exports to Raven Pro and Audacity; the official Analyzer page provides project context. Its scope is bird-focused, so it is not a general detector for every animal group.
| Need | Suitable starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Learn to read calls visually | Raven Lite | Designed for recording, saving, and viewing waveforms and spectrograms |
| Measure, annotate, and review detections | Raven Pro | Availability and long-term support are changing; verify current terms |
| Build a broader annotation and modeling workflow | Raven Workbench components | Suite capabilities and licensing should be checked at the time of use |
| Screen large bird recordings | BirdNET-Analyzer | Model coverage is bird-focused and results still require human validation |
How broad is AI coverage?
Coverage is never universal. BirdNET materials are focused on birds, while Raven Pro examples include bird, katydid, blue whale, and North Atlantic right whale models. Before processing a collection, verify the exact taxonomy, regional variants, and call types supported by the model you plan to use.

A 2021 paper by Kahl, Wood, Eibl, and Klinck describes a BirdNET model that classified 984 bird species. That number belongs to the model evaluated in that paper, not a current coverage figure for every BirdNET release. Read the published BirdNET paper for the study’s species list and methods.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy false positives happen
The 2021 BirdNET paper reports false-positive detections from other vocalizing animals, including insects, anurans, and mammals; geophysical noise such as wind, rain, and thunder; human vocal and non-vocal sounds; urban sounds such as cars, planes, and sirens; and electronic recorder noise. This is a published list of error sources for the studied system, not a current-model error rate.
Overlapping calls are especially difficult: a model may respond to a fragment from the wrong animal, or a loud nearby source may obscure the target. Seasonal changes, unfamiliar regional song types, and recordings made with different microphones can also create a mismatch between training examples and field data.
Evaluating a detector instead of trusting a score
For a serious survey, create a reference set that a person has labeled using the original audio and a documented annotation rule. Run the detector without changing files, record its threshold and version, and compare each proposed event with the reference labels. Count true positives, false positives, and false negatives, then report the decision rule and sampling scheme. A detector that finds more events is not automatically better if most require rejection.
A 2024 Frontiers in Bird Science study examined machine-learning detector performance for mountain chickadee songs using human annotation and Raven Pro workflows. Its findings apply to that species, call type, recordings, and detector setup; they should be treated as an example of task-specific evaluation rather than a claim about every animal-call model. The study is available at Frontiers in Bird Science.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using a model outside its class list
Symptom: The target animal is not listed, or only a related species appears. Fix: Treat the output as unvalidated, find a model trained for the target, or use spectrogram and listening review instead of assigning an unsupported label.

Reading a display without listening
Symptom: Wind bands, electrical noise, or a distant vehicle are annotated as calls. Fix: Play the segment, inspect neighboring time, and compare repeated events before labeling it.
Changing settings between files
Symptom: Similar calls appear to have different duration or frequency limits. Fix: Save display parameters and annotation conventions, and record any preprocessing applied.
Reporting only successful detections
Symptom: A study lists model hits but never examines missed calls or false alarms. Fix: Sample negatives and borderline scores, compare with human labels, and state the threshold and review process.
Confusing detection with ecological conclusions
Symptom: One score is presented as proof of presence, abundance, behavior, or impact. Fix: Combine repeated observations, validated detections, metadata, and an appropriate sampling design before drawing a broader conclusion.
Should I use a spectrogram or AI?
Use a spectrogram when you need to see and measure the sound itself, investigate an unusual call, document structure, or make a defensible annotation. Use AI when you have a defined detection or classification task, many recordings, and a model whose training scope matches your animals and conditions.
For most substantial projects, combine them: let AI surface candidate segments, then use the original audio and spectrogram to confirm or reject each candidate. That division lets automation handle scale while a person handles context, exceptions, and evidence quality.
