Short answer: You usually cannot delete a name from a federal campaign-finance filing after it has been published. If a Federal Election Commission (FEC) record is wrong, contact the political committee that filed it and request a correction. The committee must submit an amended report; the FEC’s individual-contributor database can then reflect the amendment, but the original report remains public. The FEC’s December 2024 redaction proposal did not include contributor names.
First identify which system published the entry. Federal FEC reports, state or local campaign-finance databases, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 8872 filings, a campaign’s own donor page, and third-party copies follow different rules and have different record owners.

What “removing your name” can mean
People use the same phrase for several different problems:
- A committee reported the wrong name, address, occupation, employer, amount, or date.
- A correctly reported contribution is visible in an FEC database, and the donor wants it hidden for privacy.
- A state or local filing, rather than a federal filing, is being displayed.
- An IRS political-organization filing, campaign website, data broker, search result, or copied spreadsheet is the source.
Those cases are not interchangeable. A factual error calls for a correction by the filing entity. A privacy request may have no available federal name-redaction route. A copy outside the original filing system must be handled with the organization or platform that published the copy.

Identify the record owner before contacting anyone
Save the page or document where you found your name, then determine who created it. Look for the committee name, filing type, report period, jurisdiction, and a link or identifier for the original filing. The following distinctions determine your next step.
| Where the entry appears | Record owner | What to request | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal candidate, party, or political-action committee report | The political committee that filed the report; the FEC administers the federal system | An amended report correcting the specific field | An amendment can update the database, but the original report remains public |
| State or local campaign-finance filing | The committee and the responsible state, county, city, or other election agency | That jurisdiction’s correction or privacy procedure | Federal FEC guidance does not determine state or local rules |
| IRS Form 8872 filing by a tax-exempt political organization | The political organization and, for filing administration, the IRS | A correction from the organization and any applicable IRS process | This is a separate tax filing system, not an FEC report |
| Campaign website or donation page | The campaign or organization operating the site | Removal or correction under the site’s policy | Changing a website does not change a government filing |
| Search engine, data broker, or copied list | The site that copied or indexed the information | A correction, removal, or de-indexing request to that site | FEC procedures do not control independent copies or search caches |
How federal FEC records become public
Federal disclosure rules explain why a donor’s name may appear. The FEC’s public guidance says committees generally itemize an individual who gives more than $200 during the applicable period. For a candidate campaign, the period is the election cycle; for a political-action committee or party committee, it is the calendar year. Itemized entries can include the contributor’s name, mailing address, occupation, and employer.
The FEC also says campaign-finance reports are posted on its website within 48 hours of receipt. That timing means a recently submitted report can become searchable quickly, even while a committee is still discovering a clerical mistake. The $200 rules are disclosure thresholds, not a guarantee that every small donation is listed by name; state and local jurisdictions may use different thresholds.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFederal FEC correction: the step-by-step route
1. Confirm that the source is an FEC filing
Use the original FEC record rather than relying on a screenshot or an article that copied donor data. Record the committee’s exact legal name, the report name or period, the contribution date and amount, and the identifier for the transaction if one is shown. Make sure the entry is yours and is not a person with a similar name.
2. Define the exact error or requested change
Write down the field that is wrong. Examples include a misspelled name, an old address, an incorrect occupation, a wrong employer, a duplicate contribution, an amount that does not match your receipt, or a contribution attributed to you that you did not make. If the information is accurate and your goal is simply privacy, say that clearly; a privacy request is different from an error correction.

3. Contact the committee that filed the report
Send the request to the committee’s treasurer, compliance officer, or official contact listed in its filing. The FEC’s correction guidance directs the donor to the filing committee because that committee has the authority and obligation to amend its report. Include enough detail for the committee to locate the transaction, but avoid sending unnecessary identity documents or financial information by ordinary email.
Ask the committee to submit an amended report and to tell you which report and line it amended. You are requesting a filing action, not asking the FEC to erase a record directly.

Save your message, delivery confirmation, the committee’s response, and any supporting receipt. A concise timeline helps if the committee asks follow-up questions or if you need to explain that the original entry was incorrect. Do not alter or destroy documents that may be needed to establish the amount, date, or identity of the contribution.
5. Check for the amendment
After the committee files an amendment, search the committee’s filings and the FEC individual-contributor database again. The amended information may take processing time to appear. Compare the corrected field with your request rather than assuming that every display of the old entry has changed at once.
6. Understand the permanent-record result
An amendment does not make the first filing disappear. The FEC’s 2018 guidance states: "However, the original report will remain on the public record." The database can use the amended information, while the original report and its filing history remain available for transparency.

Correction is different from deletion
Deleting a donation account, closing a campaign profile, or asking the FEC help desk to remove a name does not erase an already filed report. The report is an official disclosure submitted by a committee, and the committee—not the donor—controls the amendment. Even when the committee corrects a mistake, archived copies, prior reports, downloads, and third-party reproductions may continue to show the original text.
Use precise language in correspondence: request a “correction” or “update” when a fact is wrong. Do not promise yourself or anyone else that the name will be removed from every public copy.
What the 2024 FEC redaction proposal would and would not cover
On December 19, 2024, the FEC published a notice of proposed rulemaking describing a possible process for modifying or redacting limited contributor details in reports already filed with the agency. The proposal addressed mailing address, occupation, or employer name when disclosure could create a reasonable probability of threats, harassment, or reprisals.
It did not include the contributor’s name. Therefore, the proposal is not a method for removing a donor name from an FEC record. It also was a proposal, not an operative guarantee. The described request would have required identification of the published report, a sworn and notarized submission, factual support for the claimed risk, and an affirmative vote of at least four commissioners.
FEC seminar materials from 2025 stated that no final rule had been issued at that time. Rulemaking status can change, so anyone relying on a safety-related procedure should check the current FEC rulemaking docket. Do not describe the 2024 proposal as a current name-redaction remedy.

If the concern is threats, harassment, or reprisals
Preserve evidence of the risk, such as threatening messages, stalking reports, or documented harassment, and consider contacting law enforcement or a qualified attorney when there is an immediate safety issue. Those steps do not themselves remove an FEC name, but they can help you explain the situation to the committee and evaluate remedies that may exist under the applicable jurisdiction.
When contacting a committee, distinguish between a factual correction and a request for protection. The federal proposal’s stated risk standard concerned certain address, occupation, and employer details—not names—and the proposal was not confirmed as a final rule in the 2025 materials described above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.State and local campaign-finance records
The FEC administers federal campaign-finance rules and says it does not have jurisdiction over state or local campaign-finance rules. If the record concerns a governor, state legislature, county, city, school-board, or other nonfederal contest, identify the jurisdiction first.
- Find the committee’s filing on the state or local election agency’s website.
- Read that agency’s correction, amended-report, privacy, and records-retention instructions.
- Contact the committee’s treasurer for a factual correction and the agency for questions about its database or public-record process.
- Ask whether prior versions remain publicly accessible, because retention and amendment practices differ.
Do not transfer the federal $200 threshold or the FEC’s 48-hour posting statement to a state or local record without confirmation. Those figures describe the federal guidance cited here, not a nationwide rule.

IRS Form 8872 is a separate disclosure system
Certain tax-exempt political organizations report contributions on Form 8872. The IRS describes public disclosure of contributors who give $200 or more in aggregate during a calendar year; for individual contributors, the filing can include the name and address, occupation, and employer. The organization must make the relevant forms public.
Best Value
If your name appears on Form 8872, verify the organization and filing before contacting the FEC. Ask the political organization to correct an error and consult the IRS instructions for any filing-specific process. An amendment to an FEC report will not change an IRS Form 8872 filing, and an IRS correction will not rewrite an FEC report.
Campaign websites and copied databases
A campaign may publish a donor list, event-recognition page, or downloadable spreadsheet that is not part of its government filing. Contact the campaign’s site administrator or privacy contact and identify the exact page, file, or account. Request removal or correction of the web copy separately from any government filing amendment.
Search engines, data brokers, advocacy sites, and archived documents may have copied a filing. The FEC correction process does not control those services. After the source record is corrected, you can ask each independent publisher to update or remove its copy under its own policy. Search indexes and caches may continue to display an older version for a period even after the publisher changes its page.
The FEC warns that contributor data copied from its reports may not be sold or used for commercial purposes or to solicit donations. That warning concerns use of the data; it is not a deletion mechanism for a donor.
A practical message to a filing committee
Use a factual, specific request. Replace the example details with your own information and do not include sensitive documents unless the committee explains a secure method.
Subject: Request to amend contribution entry in [committee name] report
I am requesting a correction to a contribution reported by your committee.
Committee: [legal committee name]
Report or period: [report name and period]
Contribution date and amount: [date and amount]
Published field that is incorrect: [name, address, occupation, employer, amount, or other field]
Correct information: [the accurate information]
Please review the transaction and, if appropriate, file an amended report with the FEC. Please confirm which report was amended and when it was submitted. I understand that an amendment may update the contributor database while the original report remains part of the public record.
Please contact me through: [secure contact method]
If you did not make the contribution at all, say so plainly and ask the committee to investigate how your identifying information was used. Keep copies of the correspondence and any receipt that supports your statement.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with the FEC instead of the committee: For a federal correction, the filing committee must amend its report.
- Calling an accurate disclosure an “error”: Explain whether the problem is a factual mistake or a privacy request.
- Assuming a proposed rule is active: The 2024 proposal did not include names, and 2025 materials said no final rule had issued at that time.
- Using the federal process for a state or local filing: Identify the responsible jurisdiction and its agency.
- Confusing Form 8872 with an FEC report: Verify the filing entity before sending a request.
- Expecting one correction to remove every copy: Government databases, committee websites, data brokers, search indexes, and archives are separate systems.
- Sending excessive personal information: Provide the transaction details needed to locate the entry and use a secure channel for any identity verification.
What outcome to expect
For a genuine error in a federal report, the realistic outcome is an amended filing and an updated FEC contributor-database entry. The original report remains public, and independent copies may persist. For a correctly reported donor name, the material described here does not establish a current federal process for removing the name. State, local, IRS, campaign-site, and third-party records require separate requests to their respective owners.
