How to Choose a Nintendo Switch 2 Model, Bundle, and Accessories

The standard Nintendo Switch 2 includes the dock and Joy-Con 2. Choose a bundle by its game and membership, and buy only accessories that fit your plans.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most US buyers, the standard Nintendo Switch 2 is the right starting point: it includes the console, a dock, and Joy-Con 2 controllers, so it is ready for handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Choose a bundle only if you want its specific included game and online membership; add storage only if the console’s 256GB of internal storage will not cover your library. For add-ons, decide based on how you plan to play: an extra controller is optional, a camera is for video chat, and Switch 2 game storage requires microSD Express—not the standard microSD cards used with the original Switch.

Start with how you will play

The decision is not simply which box has the most accessories. The standard system already covers the basic ways to play, so first decide whether you need a game-and-membership bundle, more storage, or a particular accessory for a planned use. Buying nothing extra is a valid choice.

Choose based on your actual use

  • Mostly handheld or tabletop: the standard system includes the console and Joy-Con 2 controllers. Its built-in 7.9-inch screen is an LCD with 1080p resolution.
  • TV play: the standard package includes a dock and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. You do not need to buy a second dock to connect the console to a TV.
  • A digital library larger than the available internal space: consider a microSD Express card. The system has 256GB of internal storage, some of which is used by the system.
  • Video chat: consider a compatible USB camera. Nintendo says the console’s built-in microphone handles voice chat, so a camera is specifically relevant when you want video.
  • Separate-controller preference or additional players: consider an extra controller only if the games and player setup call for one. The standard system already comes with Joy-Con 2.

Switch 2 also plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. If you are upgrading from the original console, check support for the games you care about rather than assuming every title works fully.

What comes with the standard Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo announced the standard system at a US suggested retail price of $449.99 at its June 5, 2025 launch. Nintendo’s listed contents are the same essentials needed to start playing in handheld, tabletop, or docked mode; prices and availability can change, so treat that figure as the launch MSRP, not a promise about today’s retail price.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Included item or feature What it means for your purchase
Console with a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD Built-in screen for handheld play; the resolution describes the console screen, not every game’s output in every mode.
Joy-Con 2 left and right controllers The included pair supports the system’s standard controller setup. Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically and can act as a mouse in compatible games.
Joy-Con 2 Grip and two straps These are included, so you do not need to buy a grip or straps just to use the supplied controllers.
Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Connects the console to a TV. Docked output can reach 4K in supported games with a compatible display; 4K output is capped at 60 fps.
Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable Included for the dock-to-TV connection.
AC adapter and USB-C charging cable Included power and charging accessories for the system.
256GB internal storage Built in, with a portion used by system data. An expansion card is optional and depends on how much space your games require.

The screen and dock serve different purposes: the 7.9-inch display is the console’s own 1080p screen, while 4K is a possible docked output, not a guarantee for all games or televisions. Nintendo’s bundle information says maximum output depends on the game and display, and specifies a 60 fps cap for 4K output. Do not choose a TV or console bundle on the assumption that every game will run at 4K.

Is a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle worth it?

A bundle is worthwhile when you would have bought the included game and value the included online membership. Compare the price with the separate items you would actually purchase, not with the value of things you do not want. The answer can differ by retailer because Nintendo’s stated savings use manufacturer’s suggested retail prices; they do not guarantee that every store’s separate-item prices add up to the same amount.

US bundle prices and what the announced offers include

Offer Price and date context Included items and qualifications
Standard system $449.99 US suggested retail price at launch on June 5, 2025 Console and the standard-box contents listed above; no bundled game or membership is identified in that package.
Original Mario Kart World system bundle $499.99 US suggested retail price, announced in 2025 Nintendo’s 2025 announcement identified it as the Mario Kart World system bundle. This launch-era price is distinct from the later bundle price announced in 2026.
Later Mario Kart World bundle $549.99 US price announced August 25, 2026; Nintendo said it was expected in late September 2026 Nintendo’s US bundle page describes a system, a full digital download of Mario Kart World, and a three-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. Its advertised $37.98 savings calculation is against Nintendo’s separate manufacturer’s suggested retail prices. The page states availability while supplies last.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle $529.99 US price announced August 25, 2026; announced release date October 22, 2026 Nintendo announced a system, game download, and 90-day membership, with stated savings of $27.98. On October 13, 2026, the announced release date is still in the future.

Bundle listings and stock can change. In particular, the 2026 announcements give an expected late-September timing for the later Mario Kart World bundle and an October 22 release date for the Sports Resort bundle; those announcements do not establish present stock at a specific retailer. Check the retailer’s current listing for the exact package, price, and availability before ordering. Nintendo’s page says the Mario Kart World download is digital, so confirm that format suits you if you prefer a physical game card.

Calculate value without overvaluing the membership

  1. Write down the exact game and membership term listed for the bundle you are considering. Do not assume that another bundle or a retailer listing includes the same items.
  2. Ask whether you would buy that game at its separate price. If not, count only the value you personally place on receiving it—not its listed price as automatic savings.
  3. Decide whether you will use the membership’s online features during the included term. Nintendo says online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account.
  4. Compare the bundle with the standard system plus the separately priced items you genuinely want, using prices from the same retailer and date where possible.
  5. Account for renewal: Nintendo says the included membership auto-renews after its term unless canceled. Check the membership terms and cancel if you do not want it to continue.

Nintendo also notes that membership availability varies by country. The bundle prices above are US figures and should not be generalized to other markets.

Should you buy extra storage?

Buy storage for a concrete space need, not simply because an expansion slot exists. The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, although the system uses some of that capacity. If your intended digital library fits comfortably, you can start without a card and add one later if needed.

Use microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage

Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for saving or loading games. A standard microSD card from the original Switch is not a substitute: Nintendo says standard microSD cards cannot save or load games or save data on Switch 2. An old standard card can still be used to import or view screenshots and videos, according to Nintendo’s compatibility information.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Look for the exact format name microSD Express; a product described only as microSD is not enough to establish Switch 2 game-storage compatibility.
  • Nintendo says cards up to 2TB are supported. Cards are sold separately.
  • Nintendo says first use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update.
  • If you want a reference point, Nintendo’s US store listed a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 at $59.99 on October 9, 2026. That is a dated Nintendo store listing, not a guaranteed current or retailer-wide price.

Choose capacity by considering how many games you expect to keep installed at once and whether you are comfortable managing space. The provided specifications establish the console’s internal capacity and supported card format, but not the size of any particular game; check the storage information for the titles in your own library before deciding how much expansion space to buy.

Can you reuse original Nintendo Switch accessories?

Some original accessories can still be useful, but compatibility depends on the precise accessory and how you intend to use it. Do not assume that an item fitting or pairing with the original Switch will physically attach to Switch 2 or charge in the same way.

Original accessory Switch 2 compatibility Practical implication
Original Joy-Con Can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2. Nintendo says a Switch console or compatible charging accessory is needed to charge them. They may be useful as wireless controllers if already charged; do not treat them as a replacement for the included Joy-Con 2 pair.
Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Can pair wirelessly. Existing owners may be able to reuse it as a wireless controller.
Original Nintendo Switch dock Not compatible with Switch 2. The standard Switch 2 package already includes the correct dock.
Original Switch AC adapter Cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode; Nintendo says it can charge the console directly. Do not rely on it for docked play.
Original Joy-Con strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, and two-way charging stand Nintendo marks these original accessories incompatible with Joy-Con 2. Keep using them only with the original Joy-Con and supported setup; they are not Joy-Con 2 substitutes.
Original Ring-Con and Leg Strap Nintendo says they can be used in their named games with original Joy-Con paired wirelessly. Reuse is tied to the named games and original Joy-Con, not a general claim of Joy-Con 2 compatibility.

Nintendo’s game compatibility guidance is also conditional: Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Verify each important game in Nintendo’s compatibility information before relying on it for an upgrade decision.

Which optional accessories are worth considering?

The accessories below solve different problems, so there is no universal add-on kit to buy alongside the console. Nintendo’s US store listed the prices below on October 9, 2026; they can change and should be checked again at purchase.

Accessory Nintendo US store listing, October 9, 2026 Consider it when…
Switch 2 Pro Controller $89.99 You want a separate full controller or your control preferences suit one. It is optional because Joy-Con 2 are already in the standard package.
Switch 2 Camera $54.99 You plan to use video chat through GameChat. Nintendo says a compatible USB camera enables video chat; the built-in microphone handles voice chat.
Joy-Con 2 Wheel set, two wheels $24.99 You want the wheel accessory for compatible racing play. It is not a general-purpose requirement for the console.
Samsung 256GB microSD Express card $59.99 You need more game storage and want this listed capacity. It uses the required microSD Express format.

Controller: add one for a reason

The standard system includes Joy-Con 2, so an additional controller is not required to use the console. A separate Switch 2 Pro Controller may suit a preferred-control setup or a game night where the included pair does not meet the player needs. Check the game’s controller and player support before buying; the accessory’s existence alone does not establish that every game uses it in the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camera: distinguish video from voice chat

Nintendo says a compatible USB camera enables GameChat video chat, while the console’s built-in microphone supports voice chat. If you do not intend to use video chat, the camera is not necessary for voice chat based on those product details. The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is sold separately, and its US store listing price above is dated.

Wheels: a narrow, game-dependent extra

The two-wheel Joy-Con 2 Wheel set is relevant if you want to use the wheel accessory in compatible racing play. It is not an alternative controller system required for ordinary handheld or TV gaming. Check that the games and play style you have in mind support the accessory before treating it as useful value in a bundle or shopping total.

A practical buying path

  1. Pick the system first. If you want the console and its included dock and Joy-Con 2, compare standard-system listings in your market. Treat $449.99 as Nintendo’s US launch MSRP from 2025, not a current universal price.
  2. Evaluate any bundle by its contents. Identify the exact included game, whether it is a digital download, membership duration, and renewal terms. Compare with the separate items you would actually buy.
  3. Check your current library. For an original Switch collection, confirm game-by-game compatibility. Decide separately which old controllers or accessories you can reuse under Nintendo’s specific compatibility notes.
  4. Estimate storage needs. Start with the 256GB internal storage if it suits your library. If expansion is needed for games, buy microSD Express and account for Nintendo’s first-use update requirement.
  5. Add only use-driven accessories. Consider a camera for video chat, a Pro Controller for a separate full-controller setup, and wheels for supported racing games. Skip anything without a planned use.
  6. Verify the offer before checkout. Confirm price, package contents, release status, stock, and any membership renewal terms on the seller’s current listing. Bundle prices and accessory listings are time-sensitive.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a bundle’s headline savings are cash saved. Nintendo’s $37.98 and $27.98 figures are comparisons against its manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, not assurances that a particular retailer’s separate prices match those totals.
  • Confusing announced timing with confirmed stock. The Sports Resort bundle’s announced release date is October 22, 2026. Check the seller’s current availability rather than treating the announcement as proof that it is already on sale.
  • Expecting universal 4K. Docked 4K depends on a compatible game and display, and Nintendo specifies that 4K output is capped at 60 fps.
  • Buying a generic microSD card for game storage. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for saving or loading games; standard microSD remains limited to importing or viewing screenshots and videos as described by Nintendo.
  • Assuming old controllers attach or charge the same way. Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly but do not attach to Switch 2, and Nintendo specifies a Switch console or compatible charging accessory to charge them.
  • Buying a camera for voice chat alone. Nintendo identifies the built-in microphone for voice chat and a compatible USB camera for video chat.
