How Scientists Estimate the Size of Extinct Animals From Fossils

Scientists estimate extinct animals’ mass by scaling fossil bones against living species or reconstructing body volume. Each method relies on assumptions, so specimen, method, and uncertainty matter.

Scientists do not read an extinct animal’s exact weight from a fossil. They estimate it by measuring bones and applying relationships calibrated with living animals, or by reconstructing a digital body and estimating its volume. Both methods depend on assumptions, so a result is best understood alongside its method, specimen, and uncertainty—not as a single definitive number.

What “size” means in a fossil estimate

In studies of extinct animals, “size” can refer to different things: body mass, a skeletal measurement, or the dimensions of a reconstructed body. The methods discussed here most directly estimate body mass. Bone measurements can indicate how large or heavy an animal was likely to be, while a three-dimensional reconstruction can estimate the volume of its body and use that to infer mass. Neither approach is a direct measurement of a living animal’s weight.

That distinction matters when reading a headline figure. A number such as “1,560 kg” is not a weight recorded from the animal; it is the outcome of a particular method applied to a particular fossil specimen. Another method, or a different specimen of the same species, may yield a different estimate.

How can a few fossil bones reveal an animal’s size?

The short answer is that a bone acts as a biological proxy. In living animals, researchers can measure bones, record body masses, and look for repeatable relationships between the two. If a fossil preserves a corresponding bone, its dimensions can be entered into that relationship to produce an estimated mass. This is why a complete skeleton is helpful but not always necessary.

The strongest example in the methods described here involves terrestrial quadrupeds. Their upper arm bones and thigh bones support the body, so the circumference of the humerus and femur contains information about the loads those bones carried. A fossilized limb bone does not function like a weighing scale, however. It reflects several influences at once, including body proportions, locomotor style, age, and the animal’s evolutionary history. Researchers therefore treat the result as a statistical estimate with assumptions, not as a direct reading.

If enough of the skeleton survives, scientists can use a second route: assemble the bones digitally, reconstruct a plausible body outline, calculate volume, and convert that volume to mass. This approach uses more of the anatomy but requires more reconstruction decisions. In both cases, the central question is not simply “How big is the bone?” but “How reliably does this measurement connect to the mass of this particular animal?”

Two ways to infer body mass

Approach What researchers measure or build Most useful when Main assumptions
Skeletal scaling Measurements of fossil bones, often limb-bone circumferences, used with equations calibrated on living animals of known mass. The fossil is incomplete, but the relevant bones are preserved and measurable. The living animals and scaling relationship are suitable for the extinct animal; its bone proportions are not unusually different.
Volumetric estimation A digital reconstruction of the skeleton and body outline, used to estimate body volume and then mass. Enough of the skeleton is preserved to support a plausible whole-body reconstruction. The bones are articulated plausibly, the body outline is reasonable, and the chosen density or volume-to-mass relationship is appropriate.

These approaches are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. Bone scaling can be practical with fragmentary remains; volumetric estimation uses more of the reconstructed body but requires more anatomical decisions. When both are possible, comparing their results can expose which assumptions matter most.

How bone measurements become a mass estimate

1. Choose a skeletal feature linked to carrying weight

For terrestrial quadrupeds, one widely used proxy is the combined circumference of the humerus, the upper forelimb bone, and the femur, the thigh bone. These are major weight-bearing bones. In living animals, researchers can measure those bones and compare the measurements with known body masses.

2. Calibrate a relationship using living animals

Researchers use a sample of living species with known mass to derive a mathematical relationship between a bone measurement and body mass. They then apply that relationship to the corresponding measurements in the fossil. The result is an estimate based on the observed relationship, not a direct conversion that works identically for every animal.

A 2012 study by Campione and colleagues tested the relationship using individuals from 200 mammal species and 47 non-avian reptile species with known body masses. Its results supported a conserved relationship between proximal limb-bone circumference and mass across the sampled terrestrial quadrupeds. That evidence makes the proxy useful for many fossil quadrupeds, but it does not establish that one equation is equally suitable for every extinct group or anatomy.

3. Check whether the fossil suits the comparison

The measurement is only as informative as the bone and the comparison behind it. Researchers need the relevant fossil bones to be sufficiently preserved for measurement, and should consider whether the extinct animal’s build resembles the animals used to calibrate the equation. A very robust or unusually gracile skeleton, uncertain growth stage, or extrapolation beyond the calibration sample can affect how confidently the relationship applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A specimen that has not finished growing is another complication. Juvenile bones may not scale with mass in exactly the same way as adult bones, and a result based on one growth stage should not automatically be generalized to mature individuals. Researchers also need to distinguish a measurement uncertainty caused by damaged fossil edges from biological variation among living comparators.

This is why the method is especially useful when a complete skeleton is unavailable, but should not be mistaken for a universal shortcut. A bone is a proxy for body mass, not a scale that reveals an exact weight on its own.

How a digital body model produces an estimate

1. Digitize and assemble the preserved skeleton

When enough skeletal material is available, researchers can use images or scans to create a digital model of the bones. They decide how those bones fit together and pose the reconstructed skeleton. A model is not simply an untouched scan of an intact animal: many fossils are incomplete, and assembling them into a coherent body requires anatomical judgments.

2. Reconstruct the body outline and volume

Researchers add a plausible body outline around the skeleton and estimate the enclosed volume. Depending on the method, mass may be inferred by applying a density assumption to that volume, or by comparing the model’s convex-hull volume with a relationship observed in living animals. A convex hull is the outer envelope around a form; it provides one way to represent the space occupied by the reconstructed body.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test how reconstruction choices affect the result

Pose and anatomy can change the volume. In a study of Stegosaurus, Brassey and colleagues digitized bones using photogrammetry, posed a three-dimensional skeleton, divided it into anatomical units, and varied details including intervertebral spacing and rib flare. They generated minimum, preferred, and maximum volume poses. The exercise shows why a volumetric result depends on how a body is reconstructed, rather than being a simple reading of fossil volume.

Volume-based methods can incorporate the whole reconstructed body and are less dependent on one unusually robust or gracile bone—the “one bone effect.” But they also depend on the completeness of the fossil and choices about articulation, soft-tissue distribution, body outline, and density. A detailed digital model can make these assumptions visible; it cannot eliminate them.

What assumptions matter most in a 3D reconstruction?

Articulation is the first major choice: small changes in how vertebrae, ribs, or limbs are positioned can alter the model’s length and cross-sectional shape. Body outline is another. Fossils preserve hard tissues far more often than muscles, organs, fat, skin, or other soft tissues, so researchers must decide how much tissue surrounds the skeleton. The density used to convert volume into mass also matters; a model with the same outer dimensions can produce different masses under different density assumptions.

Researchers can address these issues by building more than one plausible pose or outline. Minimum, preferred, and maximum models show how much the answer moves when reasonable anatomical choices change. Reporting those alternatives is more informative than presenting a single polished image that hides the range of possible reconstructions.

Why two estimates can disagree

Methods can disagree because they use different evidence and different assumptions. A limb-based equation relies on selected bones and the living animals used to calibrate it. A volumetric model relies on how the skeleton is posed, how much soft tissue is reconstructed, and how volume is translated into mass. A specimen’s growth stage or unusual anatomy can complicate either approach.

Consider the Stegosaurus specimen studied by Brassey and colleagues in 2015. Their preferred convex-hull estimate was 1,560 kg, with a 95% prediction interval of 1,082–2,256 kg. In the same paper, bivariate limb-equation estimates were 2,355–3,751 kg.

Those figures are not competing direct measurements of a species-wide fixed weight. They are outputs for the studied specimen from different methods. The preferred convex-hull result includes a prediction interval; the limb-equation results are a range of estimates from the equations reported in that paper. The gap is a reason to inspect the inputs—bone measurements, reconstruction, and calibration—not to assume automatically that either method is correct.

Disagreement can therefore be useful. If a bone-based estimate is much higher than a volumetric estimate, the comparison invites questions about limb robustness, the chosen living analogues, the animal’s pose, the reconstructed soft-tissue envelope, or the density assumption. Scientists can then test whether a different but still plausible model narrows the gap.

What the Anzu estimates show

A 2021 study by Atkins-Weltman, Snively, and O’Connor reported more than one estimate for Anzu wyliei. Its digital volumetric estimate for the studied specimens was 216–280 kg; its minimum-convex-hull estimate was 159–199 kg. The authors also compared those results with extant-scaling methods.

Studied animal and method Reported estimate What the figure represents
Stegosaurus, preferred convex-hull estimate (Brassey and colleagues, 2015) 1,560 kg; 95% prediction interval: 1,082–2,256 kg Estimate for the specimen studied, not a general value for the species.
Stegosaurus, bivariate limb equations (Brassey and colleagues, 2015) 2,355–3,751 kg Estimates reported for the studied specimen using limb-based equations.
Anzu wyliei, digital volumetric estimate (Atkins-Weltman, Snively, and O’Connor, 2021) 216–280 kg Estimate for the specimens studied using a digital body-volume approach.
Anzu wyliei, minimum-convex-hull estimate (Atkins-Weltman, Snively, and O’Connor, 2021) 159–199 kg Estimate for the same study using a minimum-convex-hull approach.

The Anzu results illustrate why a study may report multiple values rather than one supposedly exact answer. The method, reconstruction, and reported range all help readers interpret what the number means. The available examples do not establish a universal accuracy rate for fossil mass estimates or one best method for every extinct animal.

A practical workflow for evaluating a published estimate

  1. Identify the specimen. Check whether the number applies to one individual, several specimens, or an inferred species average.
  2. Identify the input. Note whether the calculation uses limb circumferences, another skeletal measurement, a digital volume, or a convex hull.
  3. Check preservation. Ask whether the relevant bones are complete enough to measure or whether missing parts had to be reconstructed.
  4. Check the calibration. For scaling, examine the living mammals or reptiles used to establish the relationship and whether the fossil falls within that comparison.
  5. Check the model choices. For volumetric work, look for the pose, articulation, body outline, soft-tissue treatment, and density assumptions.
  6. Read the uncertainty statement. A 95% prediction interval and a plausible range are not interchangeable, and neither should be transferred to another specimen or method.

This checklist turns a headline into a testable claim. It also explains why two careful studies can reach different values without either one being careless.

How to read a fossil-size claim

When a report gives a mass estimate, look for the details that let you judge what was actually estimated:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which specimen? A figure may describe one fossil or a set of specimens; do not automatically treat it as a value for every member of the species.
  • Which method? Find out whether the number came from measured bones and a scaling equation, a volume reconstruction, or another stated approach.
  • What evidence was preserved? A limb-based estimate may be possible from a few bones. A whole-body volume estimate needs enough skeletal evidence to support a reconstruction.
  • What assumptions shape the model? For volumetric work, articulation, pose, body outline, soft tissues, and density can influence the result. For skeletal scaling, check the choice of bones and whether the living calibration animals are plausible analogues.
  • How is uncertainty reported? A prediction interval or plausible range communicates more than a bare central estimate. Check what the stated interval or range belongs to and do not transfer it to another method or specimen.

A strong interpretation keeps the figure attached to these qualifications. “The studied specimen was estimated at…” is more informative than presenting a single mass as an exact, settled weight for an entire extinct species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can scientists determine an extinct animal’s exact weight from one fossil bone?

No. A bone measurement is a proxy calibrated against living animals, so it produces an estimate whose reliability depends on the bone, the comparison animals, and the extinct animal’s anatomy.

Why might a complete skeleton still produce a range of masses?

A complete skeleton still needs a pose, body outline, soft-tissue reconstruction, and density assumption. Researchers may model minimum, preferred, and maximum plausible configurations, each with a different volume.

Which method is better: limb scaling or a 3D model?

Neither is universally best. Limb scaling is practical for fragmentary fossils, while volumetric modeling uses more of a preserved skeleton but requires more reconstruction choices. When possible, comparing both is more informative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a 95% prediction interval mean in a fossil estimate?

It reports the uncertainty associated with that study’s method and specimen, such as the Stegosaurus interval of 1,082–2,256 kg. It is not a guarantee that every individual of the species fell within that range.

Why should species-level claims be treated cautiously?

A published number may describe one specimen, while individuals can differ in age, size, and build. The method and specimen must stay attached to the figure before it is generalized.

The Bottom Line

Fossil size estimates are informed reconstructions, not direct weigh-ins. Bone-scaling equations and 3D volumetric models can each be useful, but their assumptions, specimen limits, and uncertainty ranges determine how confidently a result should be interpreted.
