Astronomers infer a white dwarf’s mass from its motion, spectrum, gravitational effects, pulsations, or—if it is accreting—its X-ray emission. They measure its magnetic field mainly through changes in spectral lines and polarization. There is no single instrument or calculation that works for every white dwarf: each method needs different evidence and carries different assumptions.
Why these measurements require different methods
A white dwarf is a compact stellar remnant, but its mass and magnetic field are not quantities astronomers can simply read off an image. Instead, they observe light, motion, or changes in a star’s apparent position and interpret those signals using physical models. Some techniques constrain mass through gravity; others infer it from how the star’s atmosphere, interior, or accretion flow behaves.

The available method depends on the target. A white dwarf in a well-observed binary may be weighed through orbital motion. A star with a usable spectrum can be studied through its absorption lines. A rare close alignment with a background star can make gravitational lensing possible. Magnetic-field measurements, meanwhile, depend on whether the field leaves detectable signatures in the spectrum or polarization.

How astronomers determine a white dwarf’s mass
1. Fit the atmosphere spectrum
A white dwarf’s dense atmosphere affects the shape of its absorption lines. In particular, hydrogen lines can be broader than comparable lines in lower-density stars because pressure perturbs atomic energy levels. Astronomers compare the observed line profiles with calculated atmosphere spectra to estimate the star’s temperature and surface gravity.
Surface gravity is not the mass by itself. To turn it into a mass estimate, researchers combine it with a white dwarf mass–radius relation or with stellar-evolution models. The result is therefore a model-based inference. Temperature, atmospheric composition, and the models used can all affect the derived value.
This method is useful when the spectrum contains lines that can be measured and modelled. Its main interpretive question is whether the models adequately describe the observed atmosphere. A reported mass from spectral fitting should be understood as the best-fitting value under those assumptions, rather than as a direct weighing.
2. Use a binary orbit
If a white dwarf has a companion, repeated measurements of the stars’ positions or radial velocities can reveal their orbital motion. Astronomers apply Keplerian orbital constraints to the observed orbit and combine them with information such as the system’s inclination and the companion’s properties to estimate the white dwarf’s mass.
The orbit supplies a different kind of evidence from the atmosphere spectrum: it tracks how the bodies move under their mutual gravity. But a useful estimate requires an adequately observed orbit and enough information about the system’s geometry and companion. A binary is not automatically a simple mass measurement if those constraints are missing or uncertain.
3. Measure gravitational redshift
Light escaping a white dwarf’s strong surface gravity loses energy. Its spectral lines are consequently shifted toward longer, redder wavelengths. By measuring this gravitational redshift, astronomers obtain a constraint related to the star’s gravity; combined with a radius or a mass–radius relation, that constraint can yield a mass estimate.

The challenge is separating the gravitational shift from the ordinary Doppler shift caused by the star’s motion. That requires precise spectroscopy and an accounting of the system’s motion. NASA reports that a Hubble measurement using this approach found Sirius B to have a mass equal to 98 percent of the Sun’s. That figure belongs to Sirius B and to the gravitational-redshift measurement; it is not a general mass for white dwarfs.
4. Watch a background star be lensed
A nearby white dwarf can pass almost directly in front of a much more distant star from our viewpoint. The white dwarf’s gravity bends the background star’s light, causing the apparent position of that star to shift over time. Astronomers measure the small displacement and fit the lensing geometry to determine the foreground white dwarf’s mass.
Unlike an orbital method, this can work for an isolated white dwarf: a companion is not required. The price of that independence is that the geometry must be unusually favorable, and the apparent shift must be measured with extremely precise astrometry. NASA reports microlensing masses of about 68 percent of the Sun’s mass for Stein 2051B and 56 percent for LAWD 37. Each value is tied to its named star and lensing measurement.
Kailash Sahu, the lead researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute, described microlensing as “a very independent and direct way to determine the mass of a star.” The method is direct in the sense that it uses the lensing effect of gravity rather than a stellar-atmosphere fit, but it still depends on measuring the alignment and fitting its geometry.
5. Read the star’s pulsation pattern
Some white dwarfs vary in brightness as they pulsate. Astronomers record those variations, identify non-radial g-mode pulsation periods, and compare the observed pattern with predictions for the star’s interior. The periods can constrain the total mass and internal chemical structure.
Asteroseismology is available only for pulsating white dwarfs, and the interpretation depends on correctly identifying and modelling the observed modes. Specialist reviews also describe using pulsations to constrain rotation and magnetic-field strength. Those are potential constraints from the method, not a universal measurement available for every white dwarf.

6. Model hard X-rays from an accreting magnetic white dwarf
In a magnetic cataclysmic variable, matter falling onto the white dwarf heats an accretion column, which emits hard X-rays. Researchers model the X-ray spectrum to infer the white dwarf’s mass. This method applies to accreting magnetic systems; it does not provide a typical mass for the entire white-dwarf population.
A NuSTAR Legacy Survey fitted accretion-column models to spectra in the 20–78 keV range. The NASA Technical Reports Server record reports a weighted mean of 0.77 ± 0.02 solar masses for the survey’s combined sample of magnetic cataclysmic variables in 2020. The sample and energy range matter: the reported mean describes those surveyed accreting systems, not all white dwarfs.
How astronomers measure a white dwarf’s magnetic field
Zeeman splitting in spectral lines
A magnetic field changes atomic energy levels, which can split or shift spectral lines through the Zeeman effect. Astronomers inspect the intensity spectrum and measure the separation or displacement of the line components. From that structure, they estimate the magnetic field averaged across the visible stellar disk, often described as a mean field modulus.

Weaker fields may be difficult to identify if pressure broadening blurs the lines or if the spectrograph does not have enough resolution. The detection threshold therefore depends on the star and the observing setup; there is no single sensitivity figure that applies to all white dwarfs.
A NASA Technical Reports Server record describes resolved Zeeman structure in hydrogen lines corresponding to a field of 5 ± 0.5 megagauss in the white dwarf GD 90. Circular polarization in the split components indicated a field component directed along the line of sight. The reported field and uncertainty belong to that star and record, not to white dwarfs as a class.
Circular spectropolarimetry
Spectropolarimetry measures polarization as a function of wavelength, rather than recording intensity alone. Circular polarization across spectral lines is sensitive to the component of the magnetic field along the line of sight, averaged over the visible disk. It can reveal fields weaker than those detectable through line splitting alone.

This diagnostic answers a different question from the mean field modulus inferred from Zeeman line separation: it constrains a disk-averaged longitudinal field. A star’s field can vary across its visible surface, so the two measurements need not match. When comparing published values, check which diagnostic produced each estimate instead of assuming they represent the same field average.

Some cool white dwarfs have optical spectra with few or no usable lines. In those cases, broad-band circular polarimetry can help detect magnetic effects even when line-by-line measurements are not practical. The usefulness and sensitivity of this approach depend on the star’s spectrum and on the observing setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the right method for a particular white dwarf
The practical decision is driven by the evidence available for the target, not by a universal ranking of techniques. An observer first asks whether the star has a suitable companion, a measurable spectrum, detectable pulsations, an accretion flow, or a favorable lensing alignment. For magnetic measurements, the key questions are whether spectral lines can be resolved and whether polarization can be measured with adequate signal quality.
| Method | What is observed | What it can constrain | Main dependency or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere spectral fitting | Absorption-line profiles | Temperature and surface gravity; mass through a mass–radius relation or evolutionary models | Atmospheric composition and model assumptions |
| Binary orbit | Repeated positions or radial velocities | Mass from orbital constraints and companion information | A suitable, sufficiently observed binary and system geometry |
| Gravitational redshift | Shift in spectral-line wavelengths | Gravity-related constraint; mass when combined with radius or a mass–radius relation | Precise spectroscopy and separation from ordinary motion |
| Gravitational microlensing | Apparent position shift of a background star | Mass of the foreground white dwarf | Rare close alignment and extremely precise astrometry |
| Asteroseismology | Brightness variations and g-mode periods | Mass and internal chemical structure; possible rotation and field constraints | The white dwarf must pulsate, and modes must be identified and modelled |
| Accretion-column X-ray modelling | Hard X-ray spectrum from an accretion column | Mass in an accreting magnetic system | Applies to accreting systems and depends on spectral modelling |
| Zeeman line analysis | Splitting or shifting of spectral lines | Mean field modulus over the visible disk | Line broadening, spectral resolution, and signal quality |
| Circular spectropolarimetry | Polarization across spectral lines | Disk-averaged longitudinal field | Polarimetric sensitivity and the geometry of the field |
The table shows why two credible measurements can differ without either being wrong: they may rely on different evidence, model different parts of the system, or measure different averages of a spatially varying field. In particular, a model-derived mass, a lensing mass, and an orbital mass have distinct assumptions. For magnetic fields, the longitudinal component and the mean field modulus are distinct quantities.
How to interpret published values
Read a mass or field estimate together with the method and the target’s circumstances. Ask whether the value comes from an individual white dwarf or a sample, whether it is inferred through a model or a geometric measurement, and what extra information was needed to make the inference. A survey average should not be presented as an average for all white dwarfs unless its sample supports that claim.

White-dwarf mass is established through several complementary routes, each suited to a different observing opportunity. Magnetic fields are chiefly revealed by Zeeman effects and polarization, with the field estimate depending on which signature is measured. Keeping the measurement method attached to every number is essential to understanding what an observation actually establishes.
