Satellite can serve places outside wired networks, but the best option depends on what is available at your address and how you use the connection. The biggest practical differences are latency, line-of-sight requirements, capacity, and variation in real-world performance.
How the connection reaches your home
With satellite internet, a dish or electronically steered antenna at your home sends and receives radio signals through satellites. The network then connects that traffic to internet infrastructure. Starlink describes a typical setup as a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount (Starlink specifications).

Traditional broadband is a broad category, not one technology. Fiber, cable, DSL over telephone lines, and fixed wireless use different network paths and equipment. The FCC lists these separately from satellite on its National Broadband Map. Satellite avoids the need for a terrestrial last-mile cable to each home, which can make it an option where wired networks do not reach.
Satellite internet is not one uniform service
The orbit used by a satellite network affects how far its signals travel. Geostationary (GEO) satellites orbit much farther from Earth than low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. Because of that distance, GEO generally has higher signal latency. The European Commission’s technology overview gives approximate latency figures of 600 ms for GEO and 20–40 ms for LEO; these are broad technology-level figures, not guarantees for a particular provider or plan (European Commission broadband technology overview).

Latency is the time it takes for data to make a round trip. Higher latency can make interactive tasks feel less responsive, even when download speeds look adequate. It matters for video calls, online gaming, and remote desktop or cloud applications. LEO reduces the distance-related delay compared with GEO, but it does not mean every LEO connection will perform like fiber in every location or at every time.
What speeds and performance figures can tell you
The FCC’s 2026 report gives typical satellite download speeds of 45–280 Mbps and upload speeds of 10–30 Mbps in its U.S. findings. It also says satellite performance falls behind major fiber and cable operators in measured performance, and varies with location, time of day, and plan (FCC 26-55). Those broad ranges are not a prediction or guarantee for a particular address.

- RUGGED OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION: Engineered for field-ready durability with a weather-resistant housing to withstand road travel and extended outdoor exposure. Compact dome design measures approximately 14.3” in diameter and 13.5” in height.
- BROAD DISH COMPATIBILITY: Works with DISH Wally and select ViP receivers for seamless integration into existing satellite setups. Compatible with pay-as-you-go programming, which is great for RVs, tailgating, and camping.
- TRUSTED U.S.-BASED DESIGN: Built on decades of Winegard technology expertise, delivering dependable performance, and U.S.-based servers for privacy and security, eliminating foreign monitoring concerns.
Starlink publishes different typical ranges: 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload, and 25–60 ms latency on land. It says latency can be 100+ ms in certain remote locations, including oceans, islands, Antarctica, Alaska, and northern Canada. Starlink also cautions that stated speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed and that speeds can be lower during high usage (Starlink specifications). These are provider-published figures, not an independent comparison, and should be checked against the live specifications.

Neither tells you exactly what service will be like at your home. Ask providers what applies to your address and plan, and weigh upload speed and responsiveness alongside download speed.

Tradeoffs to compare before choosing
Availability at your address
Do not assume a rural address has no wired choices. In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map lets you look up reported fixed broadband options and filter by technology and advertised speeds (How to use the FCC’s National Broadband Map). Check what is actually reported for your location, then confirm availability with providers.
Responsiveness for interactive work
If your household depends on video meetings, gaming, or cloud applications, compare the latency of the specific plans available to you. GEO’s greater distance generally brings more propagation delay than LEO; a provider’s orbit class alone, however, cannot establish the experience of a particular plan.

Speed, demand, and service capacity
Published speeds describe typical or reported performance, not a fixed rate at all hours. Location, plan, time of day, network demand, and capacity can affect satellite service. Consider whether the provider’s stated upload and download performance fits your household’s activities, and ask how it varies under busy conditions.

Satellite service needs a clear line of sight. The FCC says buildings, trees, poles, and other physical obstructions can make connectivity more challenging. Starlink lists field of view, weather, installation environment, power, and active network load among factors that can affect performance (FCC 26-55; Starlink specifications). Check the proposed terminal location before ordering or arranging installation.

Equipment and service terms
Satellite service requires a customer terminal and associated equipment; the documented Starlink setup includes a terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Equipment costs, plan terms, data policies, and availability depend on the provider and current offer, so verify them directly before committing. Do not assume equipment from one service will work with another.
Quick Recap
Which type is likely to fit?
- Consider satellite if it is available at your address and terrestrial options are absent or unsuitable. Confirm that you can install the terminal with the required sky view, and compare the specific plan’s responsiveness and performance for your use.
- Compare fiber, cable, DSL, and fixed wireless too if they are offered locally. “Traditional broadband” does not mean a single speed or quality level; the technology and plan matter.
- Choose by address and household needs, not by a technology label alone. Check local availability, then compare upload and download performance, latency, installation, equipment, and current terms.
