How Samsung’s Semiconductor Business Makes Money From Memory Chips

Samsung makes money from memory chips by manufacturing enormous volumes of DRAM and NAND, then selling that output as chips, modules, managed NAND, SSDs, multi-chip packages and wafers. Its results improve when memory average selling prices (ASPs) rise and when customers buy more premium products such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs.

The model is powerful but cyclical. Data-center and AI spending can lift HBM and server-memory revenue, while weak phone or PC demand, customer inventory reductions, export controls and supply constraints can cut shipments or delay sales. Samsung’s memory earnings therefore depend on three linked variables: bits shipped, price per bit and the mix of products in those shipments.

The three levers that determine Samsung’s memory revenue

Memory manufacturing has unusually high fixed costs. Fabs, process equipment and advanced packaging require large investments whether a factory is running at low or high utilization. Samsung spreads those costs over high bit shipments, so scale is the first lever in its business model.

1. Shipping more bits at manufacturing scale

DRAM and NAND are produced in standardized forms used by many device and infrastructure makers. When Samsung runs high volumes, the same fabrication and process costs are allocated across more gigabits of output. That scale can support revenue even when individual chip prices are under pressure, although lower prices can still reduce operating profit if they fall faster than manufacturing costs.

2. Raising the average selling price

Memory is a cyclical market. Supply additions, customer inventories and end-market demand can move ASPs sharply. Samsung’s Q4 2024 earnings presentation reported KRW30.1 trillion in DS (Device Solutions) sales and KRW23.0 trillion in Memory sales. The company attributed record memory revenue to higher DRAM ASPs, helped by increased HBM and high-density DDR5 sales.

3. Selling a more valuable mix

Not every bit has the same selling price or profitability. HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs generally carry more value than legacy products because they target demanding computing and storage workloads. Samsung’s FY2025 results said the Memory Business reached record quarterly revenue and operating profit in Q4 2025 by addressing strong conventional DRAM demand while expanding HBM and other high-value-added products, including server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs, during an overall increase in prices.

These levers reinforce one another. A period of strong AI-server demand can increase both the number of bits shipped and the proportion sold in premium products, while a weak mobile market can do the opposite.

How DRAM and NAND turn into revenue

DRAM: recurring demand for working memory

DRAM temporarily holds the data that processors need quickly. Servers use it for active workloads, PCs use it for operating systems and applications, graphics systems use specialized high-speed memory, and phones use low-power variants. Automotive electronics add another demand stream.

Samsung earns DRAM revenue when it sells individual components to equipment makers, modules for system builders or specialized products such as HBM, LPDDR and CXL memory modules. The product specification, density and intended market affect the ASP. High-density server DDR5 and HBM can therefore improve the revenue generated by a given amount of manufacturing capacity compared with older, lower-value DRAM.

NAND: persistent storage in several forms

NAND retains data without power. Samsung can sell it as components, combine it into managed NAND, or package it into SSDs and multi-chip products. SSD demand spans data centers, business PCs, consumer devices and vehicles, so NAND revenue is exposed to several markets at once.

Enterprise SSDs are especially important to the premium-mix strategy. They package NAND into storage products designed for demanding infrastructure workloads, allowing Samsung to sell a solution rather than only raw memory. When enterprise customers increase purchases and prices rise, NAND revenue and operating profit can benefit even if consumer storage is softer.

Why modules and retail products matter

A Samsung DDR5 memory module sold to a PC builder illustrates how DRAM becomes a finished, purchasable product. Samsung’s core memory business is primarily business-to-business: it supplies components, modules and packaged solutions to device and infrastructure manufacturers. A retail module is therefore one downstream form of Samsung memory, not a complete description of how the semiconductor division makes money.

Why HBM can make more money than legacy memory

HBM is designed for high-performance computing and is central to AI infrastructure. AI systems move large quantities of data between processors and memory, making bandwidth a critical constraint. HBM addresses that requirement and is treated as a high-value-added product in Samsung’s results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The economic advantage is mix, not simply branding. When a portion of wafer and packaging capacity shifts from legacy DRAM to HBM, Samsung can generate more revenue per unit of output if customers accept the higher ASP. HBM demand can also lift the overall DRAM ASP, as Samsung specifically noted in its Q4 2024 presentation.

HBM does not eliminate the risks of memory manufacturing. It still depends on available production and packaging capacity, customer demand and the timing of system shipments. Samsung’s FY2025 release said limited supply availability accompanied record Q4 2025 Memory revenue and operating profit, showing that strong demand and constrained supply can coexist.

Published figures that show the model

Measure Published figure What it indicates
Samsung DRAM global revenue share 41.5% in 2024 Scale and competitive position; the Samsung Electronics Business Report attributes the data to DRAMeXchange
Samsung DS sales KRW30.1 trillion in Q4 2024 Revenue for the broader Device Solutions segment, which includes Memory and System LSI
Samsung Memory sales KRW23.0 trillion in Q4 2024 The memory portion of Q4 2024 DS sales
Samsung Electronics annual revenue KRW333.6 trillion for fiscal 2025 Total company revenue, not memory-only revenue
Samsung Electronics annual operating profit KRW43.6 trillion for fiscal 2025 Total company operating profit, not memory-only profit

The 41.5% figure is a global DRAM revenue share for 2024, not a share of every memory category. Likewise, the KRW30.1 trillion DS figure includes more than Memory, while KRW23.0 trillion is the reported Memory sales figure for that quarter.

End markets spread demand—and spread risk

Samsung’s DRAM exposure reaches data centers, PCs, graphics, mobile devices and vehicles. NAND adds data-center, client-PC, consumer and automotive SSD markets, as well as managed-NAND applications. This breadth gives Samsung multiple sources of demand, but it also means that a downturn in one large market can affect the mix quickly.

Data centers and AI

AI infrastructure supports HBM, server DDR5, CXL memory modules and enterprise SSDs. These products are associated with large-scale computing systems and are the main reason current demand can favor premium memory over older products.

Phones and PCs

Mobile and PC shipments influence LPDDR, UFS, client DRAM and client SSD demand. If consumers or businesses delay device purchases, Samsung may face weaker unit demand or customer inventory adjustments even while data-center orders remain strong.

Automotive and embedded systems

Automotive DRAM and NAND provide another outlet. Vehicle programs can have different replacement cycles from phones and PCs, helping diversify demand, but Samsung’s cited disclosures do not state a separate automotive revenue figure.

From wafer to customer: where Samsung captures value

  1. Fabrication: Samsung manufactures DRAM and NAND wafers in high volume, spreading fab and process costs over the shipped bit output.
  2. Product selection: The company allocates output among components, modules, HBM, LPDDR, UFS, managed NAND, SSDs, multi-chip packages and other formats.
  3. Customer mix: Sales go to infrastructure, PC, mobile, automotive and storage customers. The balance determines exposure to server, AI, consumer and legacy demand.
  4. Pricing: Contract and market conditions determine ASPs. Higher prices increase revenue on the same bit volume; lower prices can compress profit even when factories remain busy.
  5. Quarterly recognition: Revenue is reported when products are delivered under Samsung’s customer agreements, so inventory timing and shipment schedules can move results between quarters.

The final step is why product mix matters so much. A wafer converted into a premium server or AI product can generate a different economic result from the same basic memory capacity sold into a legacy application.

What can reduce memory earnings

  • Price declines: Memory ASPs can fall when industry supply grows faster than demand.
  • Customer inventory corrections: Device and server makers may use existing stock before placing new orders, reducing Samsung’s shipments temporarily.
  • Weak mobile or PC demand: Lower device sales reduce demand for LPDDR, UFS, client DRAM and client SSDs.
  • Export controls: Restrictions affecting equipment, destinations or customers can delay or limit shipments.
  • Supply constraints: Limited production or packaging capacity can postpone deliveries even when demand is strong.
  • Legacy-product exposure: Older DRAM and NAND products may face lower prices and slower growth as customers move toward newer standards.

These risks interact. A market can have strong AI demand but still produce uneven results if customer inventories are high, supply is constrained or legacy mobile demand is weak.

Samsung’s stated strategy for 2026

Samsung’s FY2025 release said the company planned HBM4 deliveries in Q1 2026 and further expansion of DDR5, SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and AI-related NAND products. Those are forward plans stated with the FY2025 results; they should not be read as already completed shipments or as a guarantee of future revenue.

The direction is consistent: reduce the proportion of legacy DRAM and NAND, and concentrate more capacity on advanced-node HBM, high-density DDR5, LPDDR5x and QLC SSD products. If demand and execution support that transition, the mix can raise ASPs and operating profit. If qualification, capacity or customer timing slows the transition, the financial benefit arrives later.

How to read Samsung’s memory results

When Samsung reports a quarter, start with the Memory sales and operating-profit trend, then examine the reasons behind it rather than treating total company revenue as a memory proxy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ASP direction: Did DRAM or NAND prices rise or fall?
  • Bit shipments: Was revenue driven by higher volume, higher prices or both?
  • Premium mix: How much emphasis did management place on HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs?
  • End-market balance: Were data-center and AI orders offsetting mobile or PC weakness?
  • Inventory: Were customers rebuilding stock or correcting excess inventory?
  • Capacity and supply: Did Samsung describe constrained supply, new capacity or delayed shipments?

This checklist separates a durable improvement in product mix from a temporary price spike. A quarter with higher revenue because of premium products is economically different from one lifted only by a short-lived industry price increase.

Bottom line

Samsung’s memory business makes money by combining manufacturing scale with cyclical pricing power and a growing premium-product mix. DRAM and NAND provide the volume base; HBM, server DDR5, LPDDR5x, enterprise SSDs and other specialized products can raise the value of each shipment. AI and data-center demand currently favor that strategy, but earnings will continue to move with memory prices, inventories, supply constraints and the health of mobile and PC markets.
