If an invite does not work, first check that Steam players have crossplay enabled and that the group’s settings match. If anyone changed the preference, restart the game before trying again. Gearbox’s steps and options are documented in its crossplay support article.
Do all players need the same Risk of Rain 2 DLC?
For the Steam-listed expansions Survivors of the Void and Seekers of the Storm, Steam says one lobby member needs to own an expansion for its monsters, levels or stages, and items to appear for the whole lobby’s session. That allows players without the DLC to encounter its enabled session content while playing with an owner.

That shared session access is different from owning the expansion. Steam’s listings say non-owners cannot select the expansion-exclusive Survivors or permanently unlock certain new items, logbooks, or other content. The Survivors of the Void and Seekers of the Storm pages identify each as downloadable content that requires Risk of Rain 2 on Steam; neither is a standalone game.

An owner can enable supported expansion content for the session, so other players can join a run with that content present. The official Risk of Rain 2 announcement on Steam puts the distinction this way: “As long as one player in the lobby owns the expansion you can enable expansion content such as new items, stages and monsters for that session – even if the other players in the lobby do not own the expansion.”

What a non-owner does not get
The same announcement says: “However only people who own the expansion will be able to play as the new expansion-exclusive survivors.” Steam also distinguishes session content from permanent unlocks: a guest’s participation does not grant the ownership-gated selection or permanent unlock rights described for the expansion.
These details reflect the behavior stated on Steam for the named expansions. They should not be assumed to describe every platform or any future DLC.

Quick checks when a multiplayer plan fails
- Steam and Epic cannot find or join each other: Confirm Steam crossplay is enabled for the Steam players and that preferences match. Restart after changing the setting.
- An invitation is missing or unusable: Try a supported alternative, such as the server browser for Steam players, a public lobby ID, the Epic overlay, or an in-game invite. Account linking is the documented route for Steam players to exchange invitations with Epic users.
- A friend joins but cannot pick an expansion Survivor: Check whether that player owns the relevant DLC. Lobby access to enabled session content does not provide the expansion-exclusive Survivor selection.
- You are planning crossplay beyond Steam and Epic on PC: The cited official documentation does not establish other platform pairings. Confirm compatibility for those specific platforms separately before making plans.
