Google Drive and Dropbox are the clearest alternatives to OneDrive for an older iPhone that can run iOS 17. As of October 2026, both list iOS 17.0 or later, while Microsoft lists iOS 18.0 or later for new OneDrive mobile installations. If your iPhone is below iOS 17, the current app requirements for those alternatives are not met; check the provider’s current web options and your device’s App Store before relying on them.
First check your software version at Settings → General → About. “Older iPhone” can mean different iOS versions, and app requirements change. The right choice also depends on whether you need to store files, share folders, sync photos, or back up the whole device—those are not interchangeable jobs.

Which cloud storage apps support your iPhone’s iOS version?
These are the current requirements documented by the providers and app listings referenced here. They are point-in-time requirements, not a guarantee that every feature will work on every older device.

If your iPhone runs iOS 18 or later
The current OneDrive installation requirement is met, so age alone does not mean you need to switch. Google Drive or Dropbox may still suit you better for account, sharing, or workflow reasons.
If it runs iOS 17
The current Google Drive and Dropbox requirements are met. Microsoft’s requirements page does not promise new OneDrive installations below iOS 18, so check whether OneDrive is already installed and what the current App Store listing allows.

If it runs an iOS version below 17
The researched current app requirements for Google Drive and Dropbox are not met. Check whether a provider offers web access usable in your browser, and whether an older installed app still functions; neither app download availability nor future functionality is assured. Exact browser feature parity on older iOS versions is not established here.

Google Drive: files, sharing, and offline access
Google Drive is a practical fit if you want to access and share files across devices, or make selected files available offline, and your iPhone meets the iOS 17 minimum. Its included Google Account storage is 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, according to Google’s support guidance accessed in 2026. That means the full allowance is not reserved for Drive, and a crowded Gmail inbox or photo library reduces what remains for files.

Google says storage purchases are available only in some countries and may be subject to local taxes or fees. Check the current options for your region rather than assuming a particular price or plan applies.
Dropbox: folders and sharing
Dropbox is another option for iOS 17 or later, particularly if your workflow centers on folders and sharing. Apple supports connecting Dropbox to the Files app after Dropbox is installed and set up. Its app requirement page also lists 150 MB of available device space for installation.

iCloud Drive: keep Apple syncing alongside another provider
You do not have to replace iCloud to use another file service. Apple’s Files app can show iCloud Drive alongside enabled third-party cloud locations. This can be useful if you want to keep Apple’s services for their existing role while saving selected documents in another account.
Box: a Files-compatible option to check
Apple includes Box among cloud apps that can be enabled in Files once installed and configured. Its current iOS requirement and consumer plan details are not established here, so verify compatibility and the service’s current terms for your device before choosing it.

- Check your iOS version: open Settings → General → About and note the iOS version. Compare it with the current App Store listing and provider requirements.
- Decide what you need to store: distinguish ordinary files, photos, synced app data, and a complete iPhone backup. A file-storage app does not automatically provide all four.
- Check how you need to work: consider Files integration, sharing, and offline access. Being visible in Files means you can browse a provider’s files there; it does not mean every feature of that provider’s app is available inside Files.
- Work out the usable quota: account for storage shared with other services, such as Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, rather than treating the headline allowance as free space for files.
- Compare current regional pricing last: prices, plans, taxes, and availability vary and were not verified across providers here. Confirm them for your country before paying.
Cloud storage does not add physical space to an iPhone
Cloud quota and the iPhone’s built-in storage are separate. Buying more cloud storage does not increase the phone’s physical capacity. A service can hold files online, but files downloaded or cached on the device still use local space. If the problem is a full phone, moving selected files off the device may help only when you manage local copies appropriately; changing a cloud plan alone is not a capacity upgrade.
Likewise, a cloud file account should not be treated as a full-device backup replacement. Identify what is actually being saved: files you upload, photos handled by a photo-sync feature, selected app data, or a complete device backup. Apple’s Files documentation explains cloud locations for browsing files, while its iPhone storage guidance distinguishes device storage from cloud storage: Apple’s iPhone storage guidance.
Moving files from another cloud service
If you later choose OneDrive, Microsoft documents an import process for individual photos and files from Google Drive, Dropbox, or Google Photos. The import copies the items; it does not delete or move the originals, and the imported files use OneDrive quota. Read the current steps and quota implications in Microsoft’s cloud-file import guidance. You do not need to migrate anything just to evaluate which app suits your iPhone.
