How Researchers Test Whether a Material Has Quantum Properties

Researchers test a specific proposed behavior, not a single all-purpose “quantum” label. Here is what the major measurement methods can reveal and where their evidence fits.

There is no single test that labels a material “quantum.” Researchers first specify the behavior they want to investigate—such as superconductivity, a topological electronic state, magnetic order or a collective excitation—then measure the physical response predicted for it. Because each method sees a different aspect of a sample, a convincing interpretation often draws on complementary measurements.

What does it mean to test for a quantum property?

“Quantum” is not one measurable property shared in the same way by every material. It describes a broad range of phenomena, and a test must be designed around a specific claim. A study of superconductivity, for example, asks a different experimental question from one about a topological electronic state or a magnetic excitation.

Researchers therefore look for an observable response: electrical behavior, local electronic structure, magnetic signals, an excitation spectrum or a change over time. They vary relevant conditions—such as temperature or magnetic field—and compare the result with what the proposed phenomenon should produce. An instrument records a response, not a definitive label; interpreting it requires attention to the sample, device and measurement conditions.

Which measurement methods do researchers use?

Methods are chosen to match the quantity at issue. Nature Materials’ 2020 editorial on quantum methods makes the broader point that understanding quantum materials calls for an “arsenal” of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, in part because different probes are sensitive to different degrees of freedom.

Electrical transport: how current flows

In a transport experiment, researchers pass current through a sample or device and measure its electrical response while changing conditions such as temperature or magnetic field. The resulting patterns can help identify transitions and other characteristic behavior. NIST describes cryogenic transport studies of devices, heterostructures and atomically engineered materials as a way to investigate emergent behavior including superconductivity and metal–insulator transitions.

NIST calls transport measurements the “gold standard” for demonstrating and identifying such emergent properties in its Quantum Transport Measurements program. That is the program’s characterization of transport in this context, not a claim that transport alone establishes every kind of quantum property. Whether a particular signature supports a claim depends on the material and experimental setup.

Scanning probes: what happens in a small region?

Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) measures local electronic properties at high spatial resolution. It can be used to investigate signatures associated with topological matter, as discussed in a 2021 Nature Reviews Physics review. Its local view is useful for studying how electronic behavior varies across a surface, but it does not by itself describe every part of a sample.

Scanning nitrogen-vacancy (NV) magnetometry uses a spin defect as a nanoscale magnetic sensor. A 2026 Nature Materials review describes its use to measure static, coherent and stochastic magnetic fields in studies of emergent quantum materials. It offers local magnetic information; it is not a substitute for every bulk or spectroscopic measurement.

Spectroscopy and scattering: what energies and excitations are present?

Spectroscopy measures how a sample responds across energy or frequency. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) combines spectroscopy and inelastic scattering to probe electronic structure and collective excitations. A 2024 Nature Reviews Methods Primers article describes its use to study excitations such as magnons, phonons, plasmons and orbitons, with information across energy, momentum and polarization.

Ultrafast and photocurrent methods: how responses evolve

Some questions concern behavior that changes rapidly or appears outside equilibrium. A 2023 Nature Reviews Materials review covers ultrafast approaches including attosecond transient absorption, solid-state high-harmonic generation and extreme-ultraviolet second-harmonic generation for studying quantum materials and their nonequilibrium responses. A separate 2023 Nature Reviews Physics review describes photocurrent spectroscopy as a way to investigate electronic states, quantum geometry, excitations and device properties.

How do researchers choose between methods?

There is no universal ranking of techniques. A useful choice starts with the scientific claim and asks which observable would test it most directly. Researchers also consider whether a method sees a local region or a more averaged response, and whether its spatial, energy or time resolution is suited to the expected signal.

Method What it measures Useful for Important scope
Electrical transport Electrical response as conditions change Investigating transitions and behaviors such as superconductivity or metal–insulator transitions Measures the response of a particular sample or device; interpretation depends on its context.
Scanning tunnelling microscopy Local electronic properties Examining electronic structure and signatures associated with topological matter Provides spatially local information, not a complete account of the whole sample.
Scanning NV magnetometry Local magnetic fields and related signals Mapping magnetic behavior at nanoscale resolution Addresses magnetic questions; it does not replace all bulk or spectroscopic probes.
RIXS Energy-, momentum- and polarization-dependent inelastic scattering Studying electronic structure and collective excitations Best matched to questions about the relevant excitation spectrum.
Ultrafast optical approaches Time-dependent and nonequilibrium responses Studying rapid dynamics in quantum materials Useful when the claim concerns behavior evolving over time.
Photocurrent spectroscopy Photocurrent response Investigating electronic states, quantum geometry, excitations and device properties Interpretation depends on the measured device and the claim being tested.

Sample and facility requirements matter too. A technique may require a suitable surface, a particular device geometry, low temperatures, an applied field or specialized energy and time resolution. These are experimental constraints, not universal conditions that every quantum material must meet. NIST’s 2020 Nature Materials editorial gives an example of complementarity: a study used atomic force microscopy, cryogenic scanning near-field optical microscopy and magnetic force microscopy to view topographic, electrical and magnetic properties in the same region.

What do instrument specifications tell you?

Published facility ranges describe what particular equipment can do; they are not thresholds that a material must meet to count as quantum. NIST’s 2025 Quantum Transport Measurements page lists a cryostat range of 300 mK to 400 K and a magnetic-field range of 0 T to 14 T for its transport program, as well as a probe-station range of 4.2 K to 500 K. Those figures are capabilities of the described systems.

NIST’s Scanning Probe Metrology page, updated in 2025, reports operation down to 10 mK, applied fields up to 15 T and μeV energy resolution for its described instruments. The page also describes a group combining quantum tunnelling, quantum force, quantum spin resonance and quantum transport methods. These specifications indicate available measurement capabilities, not minimum requirements for identifying quantum behavior.

What makes the evidence convincing?

The strength of an interpretation depends on how well the measured response fits the specific claim and whether other relevant observations support it. A local probe, a transport measurement and a spectroscopy experiment answer different questions; when methods with different sensitivities point to a coherent explanation, they can help distinguish an interpretation from one based on a single signal.
