1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAsk the ocean carrier or freight forwarder for a timestamped status, a revised ETA range, the reason for the delay and the next confirmed milestone. Then compare waiting, rerouting or alternate-port options by end-to-end delivery time and total added cost. Before approving a change, get the costs and authorization in writing, check the shipment documents, and alert the people who need to receive or handle the cargo.
What should I do first if my shipment is delayed at port?
Contact the party that booked the freight, your freight forwarder or the ocean carrier. Use the booking or container number and ask for a dated update—not just an undated tracking status or an old schedule.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Ask for these specifics:
- The vessel’s current position and route, and what event caused the delay.
- Whether the vessel is waiting, diverted or has called at another port.
- Whether the container is still on board or has been discharged.
- The next expected milestone and a revised ETA range to the actual destination.
- What assumptions the ETA depends on, when it will be updated, and who will provide that update.
A tracking page can help you follow milestones, but ask the responsible carrier or forwarder to confirm a material schedule change. Treat an ETA as an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date, unless your contract says otherwise.

Can I reroute my container or choose another plan?
Ask which options are actually available for this booking. A possible alternative is not necessarily available, faster end to end, or authorized under your shipment contract. Compare each workable plan on the same basis:

- Expected arrival at the final destination, including inland movement—not just the ocean sailing time.
- ETA confidence, available capacity and the likelihood the proposed plan can be executed.
- Incremental freight, storage, terminal, drayage, rail or truck, and broker costs.
- Customs and regulatory feasibility at any alternate port.
- Cargo handling and condition risks, especially for perishable, temperature-controlled, regulated or high-value goods.
- Who has authority to approve the change and who is responsible for its costs under the relevant agreements.
Common options to ask about include keeping the booking and waiting, transshipping, discharging at a different port and moving the cargo inland, or cancelling and rebooking. For a genuinely urgent need, ask separately whether alternative transport for replacement cargo is feasible; it is not necessarily an option for the delayed container itself.
Get a written cost estimate and proposed schedule before agreeing to a change. The estimate should make clear which charges are additional, which party will invoice them, and what could change if the plan is delayed again.
Who pays the extra freight, storage or other charges?
There is no single answer for every congested port or blocked sea lane. A disruption alone does not establish who owes added costs, whether the carrier is liable for a delay, or whether an insurance policy covers the resulting loss. The bill of lading and carrier tariff, the booking, the sale contract and agreed Incoterm, and the cargo policy can address different parts of the shipment and allocate obligations differently.

- JIS8 Waterproof Level - Uniden MHS75 VHF Hand Held Radio won't give up no matter how wet it gets. Whitecap splash, gusty spray, tidal wave, whatever, this radio can take it. The Uniden MHS75 2-way Marine Radio is built rugged to take the rigors of being out on the water, day in and day out with a full JIS8 waterproof rating. It also features a floating design, and is submersible for up to 30 minutes at five feet.
- 1 /2.5/5 Watt Switchable - Select between 1, 2.5, and 5 Watts for short- and long-range communication - this is also a convenient way to save a little battery life. In most situations, the 1 Watt transmission power is all you need. If you find yourself far away from other stations and have trouble getting a response, you may need to boost the transmission power from 1 Watt to 2.5 Watts or 5 Watts.
- All USA, International, and Canada Channels - The MHS75 covers all USA, International, and Canadian marine channels, keeping you up-to-date with all the latest marine activity.
- All NOAA Weather Channels with Weather Alert - This radio comes preprogrammed with NOAA weather channels. The Emergency/Weather Alert allows it to function as a severe weather warning radio and will also alert you to any local or national emergencies. If the NOAA issues warning while this feature is turned On, the radio sounds an alert tone. You will then hear the emergency/weather broadcast.
- Instant Channel 16/9/Triple Watch - Triple Watch mode monitors channels 16 and 9 for a signal while you listen to the currently selected channel. The marine radio checks channel 16 and 9 for activity every 2 seconds.
Collect the documents for this specific movement and check them for provisions covering route changes, alternate ports, delivery, notices, free time, demurrage, detention, storage, extra freight, claims deadlines and dispute procedures. Note the Incoterm’s named place and version; the term alone is not enough to assess a particular charge or risk allocation.
Carrier terms can give the carrier options during a disruption, but the wording that applies is the version incorporated into your shipment. For example, Hapag-Lloyd’s January 2024 bill-of-lading terms describe alternative routing with additional freight, suspension and storage with costs, and delivery at another place with related charges, while listing congestion and other hindrances as possible disruption conditions. This is an example of one carrier’s terms, not a rule for every shipment. Review the applicable terms and ask the carrier or forwarder to identify the clause behind a proposed charge or change. (Hapag-Lloyd bill-of-lading terms, January 2024.)
If there is actual or threatened physical loss, a temperature excursion or a policy notice deadline, contact the cargo insurer or broker promptly. Ask about the event and cost at issue under the policy wording. Do not assume that ordinary delay or lost market value is insured.

How do I manage demurrage and detention when a container is delayed?
If the container has arrived or may be available, get written confirmation of when it is physically accessible, when the applicable free-time clock starts and ends, which pickup appointments are required, the earliest date an empty container can be returned, and the permitted return location. Keep terminal and carrier notices, appointment records, and evidence of unsuccessful pickup or return attempts.

Check an invoice against the tariff and the rules that apply to the movement. If something appears wrong, use the stated dispute process promptly and keep the invoice and supporting records.
For qualifying U.S.–foreign ocean carriage, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) says a nonconforming demurrage or detention invoice does not permanently remove the billed party’s obligation: the charges may be reissued on a compliant invoice. That statement depends on the movement meeting the applicable statutory definition; it is not a universal rule for shipments outside that scope. The FMC’s separate “Addressing Supply Chain Bottlenecks” material discusses proposals and recommendations concerning availability, free-time clocks, empty returns and earliest return dates; do not treat every recommendation on that page as a binding requirement. How does a blocked sea lane affect timing and available capacity?
A vessel diverted around a chokepoint may keep moving, but a longer route can require more time and fuel and can affect vessel demand, port congestion, operating costs, emissions and network schedules. The effect depends on the route and circumstances; global statistics do not predict the ETA of an individual container.
UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) reported in its 2024 maritime-transport coverage that the Suez Canal carried about 10% of world maritime trade by volume and 22% of containerized trade annually, while the Panama Canal carried around 3% of global maritime trade volume. By June 2024, UNCTAD reported that Red Sea/Suez diversions had increased global vessel ton-mile demand by 3% and container-ship demand by 12% relative to demand without rerouting. These figures describe historical periods and global effects, not current October 2026 route conditions or a forecast for a specific shipment. (UNCTAD, Review of Maritime Transport 2024.)

Those are retrospective figures for the stated period, not today’s waiting times. Actual local congestion and routing must be confirmed with the carrier or forwarder handling the shipment.

How should I protect the delivery and the business relying on it?
Send the receiving warehouse, customs broker, procurement or production team, and buyer the current ETA with its source and timestamp. Ask them to plan against the range and the next update time, rather than treating a single estimate as certain. Recalculate inventory cover and any production or launch commitments that depend on the cargo.
Escalate handling questions directly with the carrier or terminal when goods are perishable, temperature-controlled, regulated or high value. For reefer cargo, ask about monitoring data and power or handling arrangements during the delay. If an alternate discharge port is proposed, confirm that customs clearance and onward transport can be arranged there before approving it.
What records should I keep?
Save the original booking and bill of lading, timestamped status updates, route-change and alternate-discharge notices, revised ETA estimates, written cost comparisons, approvals, terminal availability notices, invoices, and records of cargo condition. Preserve the timeline of attempts to collect cargo or return equipment as well. A clear record helps your business make decisions and gives an insurer, adviser or dispute process the documents needed to assess what happened.
