Researchers map brain receptors by measuring different kinds of evidence: radioligand binding in tissue, PET tracer signals in living people, or the expression of genes associated with neurotransmission. Each method reveals a different part of the picture. In particular, a gene-expression map is not a direct map of receptor-protein density, and a group PET atlas is not an individual clinical profile.

What a brain receptor map represents

A receptor map shows where a specified receptor type—or a set of molecular targets—is found across brain anatomy. There is no single universal map of every receptor. A map’s meaning depends on what was measured, how the brain was divided into regions, and whether the evidence came from tissue, living participants, or gene-expression samples.

These maps help researchers compare molecular organization with anatomy and other brain features. They can reveal spatial patterns and support hypotheses, but a pattern alone does not establish what a receptor distribution causes.

How researchers create receptor maps

Quantitative in vitro autoradiography

In quantitative in vitro autoradiography, researchers apply radiolabeled ligands to frozen tissue sections. The measured binding is quantified at anatomical locations and rendered as density maps, which can show regional and layer-by-layer variation. The Jülich Brain Atlas group describes receptor fingerprints that summarize mean density and variation for analyzed receptor types across samples. Its maps and datasets are available through EBRAINS. This is a tissue-based method: it provides detailed measurements from sampled sections, not a scan of a living individual.

PET-derived maps

PET receptor maps use tracer measurements collected in living participants. A 2022 Nature Neuroscience study assembled PET data for 19 receptor, transporter, and binding-site targets across nine neurotransmitter systems. The atlas combined data from 1,238 healthy individuals and represented the results across 100 cortical regions. The authors also repeated analyses using an independent autoradiography dataset covering 15 receptors. [c002]

Gene expression is relevant to molecular biology, but transcript abundance is not a direct measurement of how much receptor protein is present. Use these resources to locate gene-expression evidence, not as receptor-density maps.

How the methods differ

Method Signal represented Coverage described by these sources Key limitation Resource access
Autoradiography Radioligand binding in tissue sections, quantified as receptor density Regional and laminar maps Tissue measurements are not an individual living scan Jülich maps and datasets through EBRAINS
PET atlas In-vivo tracer measures collated across studies and participants Human cortical atlas parcellated into 100 regions in the 2022 study Combined group data and harmonization choices; not one person’s full receptor profile Published study atlas and data context

What researchers can infer—and what remains uncertain

Receptor maps can be aligned with cytoarchitectonic maps, microstructure, connectivity, and functional data in a shared reference space. This makes it possible to examine how molecular patterns relate to other aspects of brain organization. [c004]

The 2022 study reports relationships between receptor profiles and aspects of structural and functional organization. It also notes that how receptor systems are situated within large-scale neuroanatomy—and how they shape emergent function—remains poorly understood. Spatial association can therefore support comparisons and generate hypotheses, but it does not show that a receptor pattern causes a behavior, symptom, or network feature. [c002]

How to choose a resource for visualizing receptor distributions

  • For tissue-based receptor-density patterns: start with the Jülich receptor maps available through EBRAINS.
  • For group-level PET patterns across cortical regions: consult the published 2022 atlas and its data context, keeping its multi-study design in mind.
  • For anatomical context and neurotransmission-related gene expression: use Allen Human Brain Atlas resources and Brain Explorer 2, while treating the signal as transcript expression rather than receptor density.

Atlas availability and software details can change; check each resource’s own page for current access information.
