Pulling a silicon wafer through a dotriacontane solution at different speeds produced different crystal patterns: slow withdrawal was associated with branching, dragonfly-like crystals, while faster withdrawal produced long stripes. The crystals were dotriacontane—not silicon—and the reported thresholds leave a gap where the outcome is not described.
What are the “dragonfly crystals”?
They are dendritic crystals of dotriacontane, a 32-carbon alkane, formed on a silicon wafer during dip coating. The wafer is the supporting surface; it is not the material crystallizing. An international team led by Patrick Huber of Hamburg University of Technology studied the film using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, according to Chemistry World’s 2014 report, which cites T. P. Corrales and colleagues’ paper in ACS Nano.

How did withdrawal speed affect the pattern?
The report links the observed morphology to how quickly the wafer was moved out of the solution. It gives two separate speed ranges, rather than a precise transition point or a complete map of all outcomes:

|---|---|---|
| Below 0.17 mm/s | Dendritic, dragonfly-shaped crystal | This morphology was reported at speeds below the threshold. |
| Above 0.25 mm/s | Long stripe | The report says this was thought to grow by a mechanism similar to “tears of wine,” or wine “legs.” |
| From 0.17 to 0.25 mm/s, inclusive | Not stated in the 2014 report summary | The available account does not describe the intervening speeds or establish a boundary between morphologies. |
The figures are the experimental speed thresholds reported by Chemistry World in 2014; they should not be treated as universal coating rules or as a complete phase diagram.

Why might faster withdrawal produce stripes?
For the faster-withdrawal result, the report proposes a resemblance to the “tears of wine” effect: the flow that creates streaks on a glass after wine is swirled. This is presented as a suggested analogy for stripe growth, not as a fully established mechanism in the summary. The report does not provide enough detail to extend that explanation to the slower, dendritic crystals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What was measured, and what is not established?
The research account says the resulting film was examined with electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Those methods support characterization of the observed structures and crystalline material; the summary does not supply images, diffraction data, or enough procedural detail to independently reproduce the experiment.

The cited paper is T. P. Corrales et al., ACS Nano (2014), DOI 10.1021/nn5014534. Its exact wafer grade and dimensions, solution composition, temperature, and withdrawal protocol are not established by the accessible report. Those details matter for replication, so the two speed ranges alone are not a complete coating recipe.
