Reliability depends on the species and bone studied, the sample’s size and representativeness, age structure, sex ratio, and how much traits vary within each sex. There is no universal accuracy rate for fossil sex estimates.
What a bone-based estimate can—and cannot—show
Researchers may find that a group of fossils differs in average size or shape and interpret that pattern as possible sexual dimorphism: physical differences between males and females of a species. That is a population-level inference. It is not the same as reliably identifying the sex of each individual fossil.

The distinction matters because the observed groups could reflect other sources of variation, or a mixture of factors. When there are no specimens whose sex is established independently, a study can become circular: it infers two sexes from two clusters, then treats those clusters as proof that size or shape identifies sex.

Accordingly, size- or shape-only findings are best described as consistent with a dimorphism hypothesis or as an estimate of dimorphism—not as a definitive assignment of an individual’s sex.

Why reliability varies from one study to another
How pronounced the differences are
Large differences between sexes are easier to detect than subtle ones, but visible clusters still need an explanation. Jeffrey M. Plavcan’s comparison of four methods for estimating dimorphism in fossils cautioned that “no method can accurately estimate low to moderate levels of dimorphism, particularly if intrasexual variability is high and sex ratios are skewed.” The limitation is conditional: overlap within sexes and an uneven sex ratio can make even apparently separable samples misleading. Plavcan’s 1994 study
Sample size and representativeness
Fossil and archaeological assemblages can be incomplete, represent one sex disproportionately, or lack morphological traits that identify sex independently. These problems affect estimates based on means, medians, and other methods, and make results from small or biased samples fragile. A methods analysis tested how sample size, skewness, sex ratio, and within-sex variation affect such approaches. The 1999 methods study
Age and the bone being measured
Age can affect both the expression of skeletal differences and sex assessment. The degree of dimorphism may also vary across skeletal regions, rather than appearing equally in every bone. A 2024 review of hard-tissue sexual dimorphism in early hominins highlights regional variation and cautions against treating a single cranial, dental, or postcranial trait as a universal proxy for sex. The 2024 hominin review The age-related point is also consistent with general skeletal-assessment guidance from the SWGANTH technical document; that guidance is not a fossil-specific validation study.

What the evidence says about different fossil groups
Dinosaurs
For dinosaurs, a 2017 review concludes that statistically robust inferences are very difficult because of sample size, experimental control, and methodology. It does not say that dimorphism can never be inferred. Where available, an unambiguous sex indicator—such as eggs, embryos, or medullary bone—can help establish sex independently before researchers test whether other traits differ. Mallon’s 2017 review
Living animals and dinosaurs in a comparative study
A 2023 study reported that morphology alone allowed sex assignments for about one third of 139 sexually known animals in its studied sample. That is a result for those animals and that study; it is not a general accuracy rate for fossils, nor direct validation of fossil sex estimates. The 2023 comparative study

- What is being claimed? A difference between groups in a population is a different claim from assigning sex to a particular specimen.
- How many individuals are included, and what is missing? Check the sample size, completeness of the skeletons, and whether the assemblage could overrepresent one sex.
- How much overlap is there? High variation within each sex, a skewed sex ratio, or overlapping measurements can undermine a two-group interpretation.
- Which age groups and skeletal region are represented? A pattern in one bone or age range should not automatically be generalized to others.
- Is any sex identified independently? Eggs, embryos, or medullary bone can provide an anchor for testing whether a proposed size or shape difference tracks sex.
- Does the method report uncertainty? Look for distributions and uncertainty estimates, not just a binary sorting of specimens into two groups.
What newer statistical methods add
The 2021 posterior density peak (pdPeak) method uses Bayesian inference to estimate probability densities for dimorphism and within-sex variance. It can represent uncertainty in a sample-level estimate rather than forcing every specimen into a male-or-female category. It does not, by itself, supply missing independent evidence or determine the sex of a particular fossil with certainty. The 2021 pdPeak study
So, how reliable are these estimates?
They can support a population-level hypothesis when differences are pronounced and the sample and method are suitable. But for most fossil species, the sex of a particular specimen remains uncertain when the inference rests only on size or shape. The evidence should be read in the context of the taxon, bone, sample, age, overlap, validation, and uncertainty—not as a universal rule that larger or differently shaped fossils belong to one sex.
