How Do Scientists Tell Whether Fossil Differences Reflect Sex?

A fossil’s size rarely reveals its sex by itself. Scientists test sexual dimorphism against age, individual variation, species identity, sample quality, and statistical uncertainty.

Scientists avoid assigning fossil differences to sex by treating sexual dimorphism as one explanation to test—not a label to apply when one specimen is larger or differently shaped. They compare fossils that may belong to the same species and maturity stage, assess how representative the sample is, seek direct clues when available, and report statistical uncertainty. If those checks do not distinguish sex from age, individual variation, or different species, the answer may remain unknown.

Why size or shape alone cannot identify an individual’s sex

In most fossil animals, reproductive anatomy and other soft tissues do not survive. A skeleton’s size or shape may be consistent with a male or female form, but that resemblance does not establish the sex of that individual. The Natural History Museum notes that the sex of the original Dippy skeleton cannot be known; its discussion also describes medullary bone in birds as a rare, more direct clue associated with egg production. Two questions need to be kept separate: whether researchers can identify the sex of a particular fossil, and whether a population may have differed on average by sex. A statistical pattern across a group might support a hypothesis of sexual dimorphism without revealing the sex of any one specimen—or proving that sex is the only cause of the pattern.

What else could explain the differences?

Before interpreting variation as sexual dimorphism, researchers consider whether the specimens are comparable and whether other explanations fit the evidence.

  • Age and growth: Individuals of different maturity can differ in size and skeletal proportions. A comparison is more informative when researchers can assess whether specimens are at similar growth stages.
  • Ordinary variation: Individuals within one species are not identical. A size range or shape difference may reflect variation that is not divided into male and female groups.
  • Different species: Fossils grouped together may not all belong to the same taxon. If the specimens represent separate species, their differences cannot simply be treated as variation between sexes in one population.
  • Sample composition: A collection may be incomplete or disproportionately represent certain ages or sexes. What has been preserved and found is not necessarily a balanced sample of the original population.

The Field Museum’s account of sexual dimorphism in dinosaurs emphasizes testing whether observed traits plausibly correlate with sex, rather than assuming that visible differences do. Its discussion of adult Maiasaura describes substantial size variation and illustrates why researchers examine patterns across specimens instead of relying on a striking individual. That example does not establish a universal conclusion about dinosaur dimorphism. Field Museum: Sexing dinosaurs

What evidence can make an interpretation stronger?

Direct clues, when they survive

Medullary bone in a fossil bird can indicate a reproductive state associated with egg production. Ancient DNA can also identify genetic sex in some subfossils when DNA survives and appropriate methods can be used. These clues are uncommon and have limits: neither is available for every fossil or species, and a clue found in one individual does not automatically settle the composition of a whole population.

A 2019 study genetically sexed 277 mammalian subfossils and reported that about 75% of the sampled Pleistocene bison and brown bears were male. That figure describes those study samples, not the fossil record as a whole. It is a concrete example of why scientists should check a collection’s sex composition rather than assume it is balanced. A well-contextualized group of specimens

Where enough comparable fossils are available, researchers can measure traits across the sample and ask whether the distribution is more consistent with a single variable population or with distinct groups. The inference becomes more credible when the specimens’ taxonomic identity, maturity, completeness, and context are considered together. A large sample is not automatically representative, but a single unusually large or small fossil is especially weak grounds for dividing a species into sexes.

How statistics help—and what they cannot do

Statistical methods can estimate whether a population might have been dimorphic even when the sex of each specimen is unknown. They do not turn uncertain fossils into individually labeled males and females. Results can depend on sample size, the proportion of each sex in the sample, skewness, and how much individuals vary within each sex. Researchers therefore need to explain the assumptions behind a method and communicate uncertainty around its estimate.

One Bayesian approach represents uncertainty about the degree of dimorphism as a posterior probability distribution rather than returning a supposedly certain answer from a limited sample. Other methods also have assumptions and sensitivities. In either case, a statistical fit is evidence about whether a pattern is compatible with sexual dimorphism; it is not proof that sex caused the observed differences.

A practical way to judge a sex-based claim

When reading a claim that larger and smaller fossils represent males and females, check what evidence supports each step of the interpretation:

  1. Is there an individual-level clue? Medullary bone or recoverable ancient DNA can be more direct than size or shape, but may be absent or limited to particular specimens.
  2. Are the fossils comparable? Ask whether they are thought to belong to the same species and whether differences in maturity have been considered.
  3. How representative is the sample? Look for the number and completeness of specimens, and whether collection bias or unequal representation could affect the pattern.
  4. Were alternative explanations tested? Age, individual variation, and taxonomic differences can all produce apparent groups.
  5. Does the analysis show uncertainty? A careful study describes method assumptions and uncertainty instead of treating a group-level estimate as a definite sex assignment for every fossil.

If these checks leave multiple explanations open, “unknown” or “not established” is a more accurate conclusion than assigning sex from size alone.
