To make a projector image look brighter in daylight, first keep sunlight and room lights off the screen, then try a brighter picture mode and reduce the image size. If you cannot control the room, a compatible ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen may improve perceived contrast—but it cannot increase the projector’s actual light output. Direct sun on the screen can overwhelm even a high-brightness projector.
1. Keep light off the projection surface
Ambient light reflected from the screen competes with the projected image. The result is weaker perceived contrast: dark scenes look gray and colors appear washed out. You do not necessarily need to darken the entire room; start by reducing the light that reaches the screen.

- Close blinds or curtains, especially on windows that cast light onto the screen.
- Turn off nearby lamps or overhead lights that illuminate the projection surface.
- If direct sun still hits the screen, shade it or move the screen away from the sun’s path.
Direct sunlight is a particularly difficult case. XGIMI notes that even a high-brightness projector can struggle when sunlight falls directly on the projection surface (XGIMI’s daylight projection guide). Blocking or redirecting that light is generally more effective than trying to overcome it with projector brightness alone.

Check the picture-mode menu for a brighter output mode, and turn off Eco mode if it is enabled and you need more light. Names and menu paths vary by projector, so consult the model’s on-screen menu or manual.

Compare the picture before and after the change. A projector’s brightest mode may sacrifice color accuracy; on some models, maximum-output settings can look green-shifted. That trade-off may be acceptable for slides or presentations but distracting for color-critical video. ProjectorCentral’s business projector buying guide discusses brightness and picture modes.
3. Make the projected image smaller
The projector’s light is spread across the screen area. Reducing the image size concentrates that light onto a smaller area, increasing brightness per unit of screen surface. Before buying new equipment, test a smaller image by adjusting the projector’s placement or zoom, where available. Placement and zoom position can affect output, so compare the result from the position you plan to use.

4. Check for brightness lost over time
If the image used to look brighter under similar conditions, check for a maintenance or setting issue before assuming the projector is underpowered.

- Clean the lens and filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Verify that Eco mode is not reducing output.
- If the projector uses a lamp, consider whether the lamp has aged and needs replacement.
5. Decide whether an ALR screen fits your setup
An ambient light rejecting screen is designed to manage light arriving from particular directions. In a room where daylight cannot be fully controlled, a suitable ALR screen may improve perceived contrast, clarity, and color. It does not make the projector produce more lumens.

ALR screens are directional rather than universally effective. Before choosing one, match its optical design to the projector type, throw geometry, installation orientation, ambient-light direction, and viewers’ seating angles. A high-gain surface can favor viewers near the center while appearing dimmer off-axis. Legrand AV / Da-Lite describes one contrast-based gray ALR screen type as blocking up to 80% of ambient light; that is a vendor description of that type, not a performance guarantee for all ALR screens (Da-Lite’s ALR screen guide).

There is no universal lumen threshold for daylight viewing. The result depends on room light, screen size and surface, projector placement, and how brightness is measured. Treat manufacturer recommendations as starting points, not guarantees for a particular room.

When comparing projectors, look for standardized brightness ratings, such as ISO or ANSI lumens, and note the picture mode associated with the rating. Where published, compare both white and color brightness: Epson advises checking for separate specifications because a white-brightness figure alone may not describe color output. Also compare the rating against your intended image size and room conditions; a lumen number by itself cannot predict the result.

Use this order before upgrading
- Shade the screen and reduce nearby room light.
- Try a brighter picture mode and disable Eco mode if needed; judge the color trade-off.
- Test a smaller image size.
- Clean the lens and filters, and check lamp age if applicable.
- If daylight remains unavoidable, assess an ALR screen for your projector geometry and seating layout.
- If the image is still too dim, compare projectors by standardized brightness, color output, intended image size, and the light that actually reaches the screen.
