AI text detectors can flag writing that resembles language-model output, but their scores are not dependable proof of who wrote it. They can falsely flag human writing, miss AI-generated text, and produce different results depending on a text’s length, language, genre, and editing history. Treat a score as one limited clue—not a verdict.
What an AI detector score can—and cannot—tell you
A detector classifies text based on patterns its model associates with AI-generated writing. It does not observe who typed the words, establish what tools a person used, or prove an author’s intent. A high score is therefore not, by itself, evidence that a particular person used AI.

Percentages need especially careful reading. Turnitin defines its AI percentage as the share of qualifying prose that its model identifies as likely AI-written or AI-written and modified using a paraphraser. It is not a calibrated probability that the named writer used AI. Turnitin also says its testing found more false positives in the 0%–19% range; current reports show that range with an asterisk rather than a numerical score. Older reports generated before July 8, 2024 may display numerical values below 20%. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report guide explains how to interpret the report.
Why detectors make mistakes
False positives: human writing flagged as AI
A false positive occurs when human-authored text is labeled AI-written. This can lead to an unwarranted accusation or a mistaken decision about a student or writer. Turnitin itself cautions that false positives are possible.

False negatives: AI text not detected
A false negative occurs when AI-generated text is labeled as human-written. This can create false reassurance. In a 2023 evaluation of its English challenge set, OpenAI’s classifier identified 26% of AI-written text as likely AI-written and incorrectly labeled 9% of human-written text as AI-written. OpenAI said performance typically improved with longer inputs, but discontinued the classifier on July 20, 2023 because of its low accuracy. Those figures describe that retired classifier and test—not every current detector. OpenAI’s announcement called the classifier “not fully reliable.”
Independent testing also found wide variation among tools. In their specific 2023 test, Weber-Wulff and colleagues reported false-positive probabilities ranging from 0% to 50% and false-negative probabilities from 8% to 100% across the tools evaluated. These are not universal or current error rates; they show why one accuracy figure cannot stand in for every product, dataset, and use. The study also found that obfuscation significantly worsened the performance of tested detectors. Read the study in the International Journal for Educational Integrity.

Language and writing style can affect results
Bias findings differ by system and test, so neither a claim that all detectors disadvantage non-native English writers nor a claim that the risk has been eliminated is justified.

In a 2023 study, Liang and colleagues tested several GPT detectors on human-written TOEFL practice essays. All evaluated detectors together flagged 19.8% of that sample as AI-authored, and at least one detector flagged 97.8%. These figures apply to the study’s essays and tools; they are not universal rates for non-native writers or all present-day products. The study, published in Patterns, details its findings and methods.

Turnitin later reported no statistically significant difference in false-positive rates between its L1 and L2 English groups for submissions meeting its 300-word minimum. For documents that were too short, it reported a greater difference and rates above its target. This was a vendor-reported evaluation of Turnitin’s system, not a test of every detector or population. The differing results underline the importance of the system, sample, and conditions being evaluated. Turnitin’s account of its evaluation describes the groups it compared.
Editing can also change detector outputs. Weber-Wulff and colleagues found reduced performance under obfuscation in their tests. A 2026 preprint by Park, Jeong, and Kim reports that professional editing style can confound scores and that responses varied across detectors. Because the work is preliminary, it should be read as evidence of a possible complication—not a universal estimate of how much a particular edit changes a score. Read the preprint.

Length, language, and format set boundaries
Turnitin’s current AI Writing Report guide says the report requires at least 300 words of prose and a supported language. As of October 7, 2026, the guide lists English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic. Its model assesses qualifying prose in long-form writing; it does not reliably assess short-form or non-prose material such as poetry, scripts, code, bullet points, tables, or annotated bibliographies. Turnitin’s model documentation describes these scope limits. A score on text outside a tool’s stated requirements should not be treated as meaningful evidence.

The feature set and documentation may change, so check the current product guide when interpreting a report.

How to evaluate a detector or compare tools
“Accuracy” alone can hide the errors that matter most. A useful evaluation should identify the exact tool and test conditions, and report false positives separately from false negatives.
- Test both kinds of text: Use verified human-written and generated samples relevant to the intended setting.
- Match the real use: Include the language, genre, length, and writing population the tool will encounter.
- Record versions and dates: Detector models change, so results from one version or year may not describe another.
- Test editing conditions: Check whether results shift after ordinary editing or paraphrasing.
- Read the score definition: Determine whether a number is a share of text, a model score, or a calibrated probability; do not assume these are interchangeable.
- Look for transparent evidence: Independent replication and disclosed test data are more informative than an unqualified vendor accuracy claim.
What to do when a detector flags writing
For a consequential decision, use the detector output as a prompt for careful review, not as the basis for an accusation. Turnitin advises against using its score as the sole basis for adverse action.
Quick Recap
- Check whether the text is in scope. Confirm that it meets the tool’s minimum length and supported-language requirements and is a format the system says it can assess.
- Read the score according to the vendor’s definition. A percentage may describe flagged qualifying text, not the probability of a person’s authorship.
- Review context alongside the result. Drafts, notes, document history, and the writer’s explanation may help clarify how the work was produced. No single artifact automatically proves authorship.
- Give the writer a meaningful chance to respond. Do not infer misconduct from polished prose, writing style, language background, or a lone detector score.
