Invisible text watermarks are statistical patterns embedded in the words an AI model chooses—not hidden characters or a universal label attached to every AI-written passage. During generation, a supported system subtly adjusts the likelihood of possible next tokens. A detector then checks whether the finished text contains the expected pattern. A match can be a clue about how text was generated, but it does not prove who wrote, owns, or is responsible for it.
How a text watermark is embedded
Language models generate text one token at a time. A token can be a whole word, part of a word, or a character. At each step, the model assigns likelihoods to possible next tokens. A text-watermarking system subtly changes those likelihoods so that, across a passage, the model’s choices follow a pattern that can later be detected.

The signal is therefore carried by the pattern of token choices in the wording. It need not appear as a special character, unusual punctuation, or metadata field. Google DeepMind describes SynthID as adjusting token probability scores; OpenAI describes textGrain as using a secret pattern in token choices and multiple adjusted likelihood distributions. These are examples of the general approach, not interchangeable systems. Google DeepMind’s SynthID description; OpenAI’s explanation of text watermarking.

A detector evaluates whether token choices or scores in a passage match the pattern expected for a supported watermarking system. In Google DeepMind’s description, SynthID compares the observed score pattern with expected watermarked and unwatermarked patterns. The detector is looking for evidence of that system’s signal, not making a universal judgment about whether text was generated by AI.

A positive result is best understood as a provenance clue: the text appears consistent with a watermark the detector can recognize. It does not, by itself, establish a particular person’s authorship, ownership, responsibility, or degree of human contribution. OpenAI explicitly notes that a watermark does not answer those questions or determine whether disclosure was required. OpenAI’s explanation.
A negative result means only that the detector did not find the supported signal in the text it examined. The text might come from a system whose watermark is unsupported, be too short to analyze reliably, or have been changed enough to weaken the signal. It is not proof that a person wrote the text.

Why text watermarks can be fragile
Text offers less room to embed a signal than images or audio, and relatively small edits can affect the pattern. NIST describes text watermarking as sensitive to alterations that can dilute the signal. Rewriting, translation, or even edits that change token choices may make detection harder. Google DeepMind says SynthID works best on longer responses with varied wording, such as an essay or script. It reports that the system can tolerate some cropping, small word changes, and mild paraphrasing, but says confidence can fall substantially after thorough rewriting or translation. These are Google’s descriptions of its system, not performance guarantees for every watermark. Google DeepMind’s SynthID description.

Some prompts leave little room to adjust wording
Google says the method is less effective for factual prompts, where changing token probabilities can risk accuracy, and for fixed outputs such as reciting a known poem. A short factual response or a text with highly constrained wording may offer less opportunity for a detectable pattern than a longer, varied passage.
How text watermarking differs from other checks
Embedded watermarking changes token selection during generation and leaves a signal in the resulting text. That is different from a post-hoc classifier, which estimates whether text looks AI-generated without searching for a particular embedded signal. It is also different from file metadata, which stores information separately from the wording and may be lost when text is copied. A detector’s reach depends on whether it supports the watermark system and has the information needed to recognize its pattern.

For that reason, a watermark is not a universal AI detector. Not every AI system watermarks its output, and one provider’s detector should not be assumed to recognize another provider’s signal. What a watermark can—and cannot—establish
- It can: provide evidence that a passage contains a supported watermark pattern associated with a particular generation system.
- It cannot establish on its own: who authored or owns the text, who is legally responsible, whether disclosure was required, or how much a person contributed.
- No detected signal does not establish: that the text is human-written. The system may be unsupported, or the text may be too short or altered for detection.
Google DeepMind calls SynthID “an important building block” rather than a complete solution for identifying AI-generated content. That distinction captures the appropriate role of text watermarking: one provenance signal that may complement other checks, not a conclusive authorship test. Google DeepMind’s SynthID description.
