Traditional antivirus (AV) is primarily designed to prevent and detect malware; endpoint detection and response (EDR) adds behavioral visibility, investigation context, and ways to respond to suspicious activity. They overlap, and some products combine both. EDR is not automatically a replacement for antivirus, and its telemetry is not necessarily a complete record of everything a device does.
What antivirus and EDR are designed to do
Traditional antivirus: prevent and detect malware
AV typically focuses on stopping malicious files or behavior before they cause harm, and detecting threats that have reached a device. Depending on the product, it may scan files, assess reputation, monitor processes, use behavioral rules or heuristics, and draw on cloud intelligence. “Traditional” should not be taken to mean signature-only: Microsoft documents cloud protection, always-on scanning with file and process behavior monitoring, heuristics, and protection updates informed by machine learning and analysis for Microsoft Defender Antivirus. EDR: detect, investigate, and respond
EDR collects selected endpoint signals and uses them to identify suspicious activity, connect related alerts, and support investigation and response. Depending on the product and plan, response options may include actions such as isolating a device or handling a malicious file. EDR’s emphasis is not just whether malware was found, but what activity appears connected to an incident and what action an organization can take.

These are functional emphases, not strict product boundaries. Modern AV may include behavioral detection and cloud-based analysis; some EDR products include or depend on AV functions. Not every EDR offering includes an antivirus engine, and not every AV product provides EDR-level investigation or response.

EDR vs. antivirus: practical differences
| Decision area | Antivirus | EDR |
|---|---|---|
| Primary emphasis | Preventing and detecting malware through scanning and other protection methods. | Detecting suspicious or advanced activity and supporting investigation and response. |
| Signals | May use files, processes, reputation, behavior, and cloud intelligence; coverage depends on the product. | May provide behavioral endpoint telemetry, such as process or network events and system changes; coverage depends on the product. |
| Investigation | Often centers on a detection and its remediation. | May correlate alerts into incidents and provide context for analyst investigation. |
| Response | May block, quarantine, or remediate malware. | May add device isolation, file actions, or automated responses; available actions depend on product and plan. |
| Deployment | Often serves as the active antimalware engine. | May run alongside AV or provide some overlapping protection itself. |
| Operational considerations | Consider scanning overhead, exclusions, updates, and policy management. | Consider sensor deployment, telemetry management, integrations, retention, response authority, and staffing. |
The table describes common roles, not guarantees. Compare actual product capabilities, supported platforms, and licensed features rather than relying on the AV or EDR label alone.
EDR telemetry is not necessarily a complete activity log
EDR is designed to help detect and investigate threats, not necessarily to record every action on every endpoint. Microsoft states: “Defender for Endpoint detection is not intended to be an auditing or logging solution that records every operation or activity that happens on a given endpoint.” Microsoft Learn: Overview of endpoint detection and response capabilities

That distinction matters if you need a complete audit trail or forensic record: confirm the product’s event coverage, retention, and any separate logging or auditing tools required. Microsoft’s current Defender for Endpoint documentation says behavioral telemetry is retained for six months. That is a Microsoft service statement, not a general EDR retention standard; check the current terms for the particular service and plan.
Can antivirus and EDR run together?
Often, but the answer depends on the products, operating system, onboarding, and configuration. In Microsoft’s implementation, Defender for Endpoint depends on Defender Antivirus for some capabilities, including file scanning. On supported and onboarded devices using a non-Microsoft antimalware client, Defender Antivirus may run in passive mode; in that mode, it does not perform real-time protection scans or replace the primary antimalware client. Microsoft notes that behavior varies by Windows version and configuration, particularly on servers. Microsoft Defender Antivirus compatibility

Microsoft warns that concurrent security products performing the same function can cause performance problems or conflicts. Exclusions may help with compatibility, but overly broad exclusions can reduce protection. Microsoft guidance on Defender for Endpoint and antivirus compatibility
For a deployment, document which product is responsible for each control—such as real-time malware prevention, EDR monitoring, and response—and verify that the chosen configuration is supported. Do not assume an EDR agent automatically disables, replaces, or complements the existing AV in the same way across vendors.

How to choose what your organization needs
Start with the security and operational requirements, then compare specific products and license tiers. A useful evaluation checklist is:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Prevention: What scanning, malware blocking, behavioral protection, and cloud intelligence are included?
- Visibility: Which endpoint events are collected, on which platforms, and at what level of detail?
- Investigation: Can the tool group related alerts into incidents and give analysts enough context to investigate?
- Response: Which manual and automated actions are available, and which require a higher plan or additional configuration?
- Retention: How long is the required telemetry available, and is that retention included in the relevant license?
- Deployment and coexistence: Which agent will be the active antimalware engine? Are the products and operating-system versions supported together?
- Operations: Who will review alerts, investigate incidents, authorize response, manage integrations, and maintain policies?
- Total fit: Compare platform coverage, licensing, staffing needs, and total cost alongside technical features.
Some plans provide only a limited set of manual response actions, and features vary by product and deployment. Verify the current vendor feature matrix and platform documentation before assuming that isolation, quarantine, automated remediation, or a particular retention period is included.

Is EDR better than antivirus?
There is no universal winner established by these distinctions. AV and EDR address overlapping but different needs, and products vary in prevention, visibility, investigation workflow, and response. An organization evaluating options should compare current vendor documentation and, where available, independent testing against its own platform and operational requirements rather than treating EDR as a guaranteed upgrade or AV as inherently outdated.
