A Samsung Galaxy can stop receiving major Android version upgrades and still receive security patches. The two update types do different jobs: an Android version update moves the phone to a newer operating-system generation, while a security update delivers maintenance fixes without necessarily changing the Android version.
What is the difference between an Android update and a security update?

Samsung describes these as separate types of software updates. A security patch can arrive while the Android version stays the same, and a phone can reach its final major Android upgrade while remaining within its security-support period. Can a Galaxy still get security updates after Android upgrades stop?
Yes, if that model remains within its security-support period. The end of major Android or One UI upgrades does not automatically mean security updates have ended; check the specific model’s current support listing and cadence rather than inferring one from the other.
There is no single support period for every Galaxy. Samsung’s published commitments have changed over time and apply to particular device cohorts, not universally:

These figures describe different policies and cohorts across different years. “Up to” is not a guarantee that every phone gets the maximum term, and an OS-upgrade figure should not be read as a security-update end date.
How often does Samsung release security patches?
Patch cadence depends on the model and can change. Samsung’s published materials describe monthly, quarterly, or biannual schedules; the current cadence for a device should be checked on Samsung Mobile Security’s security-update scope page. An older announcement or a different Galaxy model’s schedule does not establish the current cadence for your phone.

How to check your Galaxy’s Android version and available updates
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information to see the installed Android version. Menu names can vary by device.
- Open Settings > Software update and choose the available check or download option to look for updates.
- Find the exact model number in Settings > About phone, then search for that model on Samsung Mobile Security to check its listed security-support scope and cadence.
Samsung says update type and version depend on the model, and rollout stages may differ by location and carrier. Its UK support guidance, updated July 2, 2026, also notes that older devices may be unable to install the latest Android version because of hardware limitations. A check showing no update available therefore does not, on its own, prove that support has ended.

- Remaining Android/One UI upgrades: how many major generations, if any, Samsung says the particular model can still receive.
- Security-support duration or end date: the model-specific commitment, where Samsung states one.
- Current patch cadence: the schedule currently listed for that model on Samsung Mobile Security.
- Market and carrier rollout: availability and timing can differ by country, region, and carrier.
Samsung’s 2020 and 2022 announcements illustrate why these checks should remain separate: both described select-device OS-upgrade policies, while security-update coverage was stated as a distinct commitment.
