Real-world-asset (RWA) perpetuals are cash-settled derivatives that track an off-chain reference such as a stock, ETF, commodity, index, foreign-exchange pair or pre-IPO valuation. You post crypto collateral, open a leveraged long or short position, and settle profit or loss in the venue’s quote asset. An oracle supplies the reference price, while recurring funding payments pull the perp’s trading price toward that reference. The contract normally has no expiry and does not deliver the stock, oil, bond or other asset.
What an RWA perpetual actually is
A perpetual contract, often called a perp or perpetual swap, gives you price exposure without a fixed settlement date. In an RWA version, the reference is outside the crypto venue: for example, a share price, an exchange-traded fund, a commodity benchmark, an FX rate or a private-company valuation. The contract itself is still a derivative. It is not automatically a share, bond, warehouse receipt or claim on the referenced asset.

The trader deposits collateral, chooses a direction and posts a notional position that can be larger than the collateral through leverage. A long gains when the reference rises; a short gains when it falls. The venue continuously marks the position against an index or oracle price and updates unrealized profit and loss. When the position is closed, the result is paid in the collateral or quote asset. No certificate, barrel of oil or bond is delivered by the perp.

How a trade moves from deposit to settlement
- Deposit collateral. The venue accepts specified stablecoins or other crypto assets. It may apply haircuts, minimum balances or separate cross- and isolated-margin rules.
- Open a position. You submit a long or short order for a chosen notional amount. Leverage makes that notional larger than the collateral supporting it, so both gains and losses are amplified.
- Receive an oracle-based mark. The venue compares your position with an index price imported from outside markets. That mark, rather than an individual last trade, is normally used for unrealized PnL, margin calculations and liquidation.
- Exchange funding. At each funding interval, one side pays the other. The direction depends on whether the perp is trading above or below the index.
- Meet margin requirements or be reduced. If account equity falls below maintenance margin, the liquidation engine can cancel orders, close part of the position or close it completely under the venue’s rules.
- Close and settle. Your realized PnL, less trading costs, funding and any liquidation charges, is returned in the venue’s settlement asset. The perp does not transfer ownership of the referenced RWA.
How the oracle connects an off-chain asset to an on-chain position
An exchange cannot safely use only its own order book to value an RWA perp: a thin or manipulable book could move the mark and trigger forced trades. Velocity’s documentation notes that an outside oracle is needed for this reason. An oracle may aggregate several market-data sources, calculate an index, attach a confidence range, reject stale observations and publish updates to the trading system.
What the oracle supplies
- Reference or index price: the value against which the perp is marked.
- Update timing: how often a new observation is accepted and how stale data is handled.
- Confidence information: a band or quality score that can be used to reject abnormal prices.
- Fallback behavior: a secondary feed, a pause, or a special mark if the primary source fails.
- Market-status handling: rules for holidays, overnight sessions, halts and corporate actions.
These details matter more for an RWA than for a continuously traded crypto pair. A U.S. equity may have no official price for several hours while its perp continues trading. If the oracle freezes, the perp can trade at a premium or discount to the last available index; if the venue keeps liquidating against a stale mark, traders can suffer losses unrelated to a current executable price.
Funding: the price-peg mechanism
Funding is a transfer between traders, not normally a fee retained by the exchange. Aftermath Finance describes it as “periodic payments exchanged directly between traders.” When the perp trades above its oracle index, longs are on the expensive side and generally pay shorts. That cost makes holding a long less attractive and can encourage new shorts. When the perp trades below the index, shorts generally pay longs, encouraging buyers and discouraging additional shorts.

How a funding calculation works
Each venue specifies its own formula, interval, caps and interest component. A common approach compares a time-weighted average of the perp price with a time-weighted average of the index. Position Exchange documents an hourly TWAP example: the funding rate is derived from the difference between the perpetual and index TWAPs; positive funding debits longs and credits shorts.
A simplified representation is funding payment = position notional × funding rate. The sign of the rate identifies the payer, while the venue’s contract determines whether the payment is based on mark price, index price or another measure. A position that remains open through many intervals can accumulate a substantial debit even when each individual rate appears small. Conversely, receiving funding does not remove the risk of an adverse price move or a sudden change in the rate.
Questions to answer before opening a position
- Is funding hourly, every eight hours or on another schedule?
- Is the rate capped, and can the cap change during stressed conditions?
- Is funding calculated from a premium index, TWAP, interest component or a combination?
- Does the venue charge or credit funding continuously, at an interval boundary or when a position is closed?
- What happens if the oracle is stale or the underlying market is closed?
Why an RWA perp is not the same as owning a tokenized stock
| Question | RWA perpetual | Separately issued tokenized security |
|---|---|---|
| Legal form | A cash-settled derivative whose value references an off-chain asset | A token that may represent ownership, a beneficial interest or a redemption claim, depending on its issuer and legal documents |
| Expiry | Normally none; funding keeps the price near the index | Determined by the security or issuance terms |
| Delivery of the reference asset | No stock certificate, commodity or bond is delivered by the perp itself | Rights, redemption and custody depend on the token’s structure |
| Typical collateral | Crypto assets accepted by the venue | Set by the issuer or platform; a separate token may or may not be usable as collateral |
| Voting, dividends and corporate actions | Not created merely by holding the perp; treatment is set by contract rules | May exist if the token’s legal terms provide them |
Solana Labs’ synthetic-asset documentation uses the same distinction: synthetics can represent commodities, stocks, bonds and foreign-exchange currencies, but positions are collateralized by crypto assets and require an oracle price. A trader should therefore read the legal terms of the reference token and the derivative separately. A perp can track a stock price without granting voting rights, dividends, redemption or a claim against the stock’s issuer.

How venues implement RWA perpetual markets
Partner-deployed perpetual exchanges
perps.studio describes Hyperliquid HIP-3 as a framework for independent perpetual exchanges deployed by partners. Its RWA category can include tokenized stocks, commodities and custom assets. Each individual exchange chooses its markets, oracle, leverage, margin parameters and fee schedule. Consequently, “an RWA perp” is not one standardized product: two venues can reference the same company while using different feeds, hours, caps and liquidation engines.
Stock and ETF futures with high leverage
In a February 3, 2026 announcement, Ondo described perpetual futures on U.S. stocks, ETFs and commodities with up to 20x leverage and a planned ability to use tokenized securities as collateral. “Up to 20x” is a product limit, not a promise that every market or account receives that leverage. The applicable margin, eligibility and collateral rules remain venue-specific.
Custom synthetic assets
A synthetic platform can list an asset that has no directly transferable on-chain representation. Its solvency depends on collateral rules, the oracle, the liquidation process and the operator or smart-contract design. The farther the reference market is from a deep, continuously quoted exchange, the more important the venue’s valuation and fallback rules become.

Leverage, margin and liquidation
Initial margin is the collateral required to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity needed to keep it open. Because leverage makes notional exposure larger than collateral, a relatively small adverse move can consume the margin. Funding debits also reduce equity and can bring a position closer to liquidation even when the reference price has barely changed.
What liquidation can look like
- Order cancellation: the engine removes open orders so remaining collateral is reserved for the position.
- Partial reduction: part of the notional is closed to restore the maintenance-margin ratio.
- Full closeout: the engine executes against available liquidity and settles the remaining balance.
- Insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging action: if the closeout cannot be completed at the assumed price, the venue may use an insurance fund or reduce profitable opposing positions, subject to its rules.
Liquidation price is not a universal number. It depends on entry price, leverage, collateral denomination, maintenance-margin schedule, funding accrued, fees, mark-price method and whether the account is isolated or cross-margined. Read the venue’s liquidation penalty, bankruptcy-price definition, insurance-fund policy and auto-deleveraging priority before trading.

Oracle and valuation risk
A stale, manipulated or thin-market feed can create an incorrect mark, unfair funding transfers or premature liquidation. Check the source exchanges, aggregation method, update frequency, confidence bands, fallback feeds and circuit breakers. Also check whether the feed follows a last trade, a midpoint, a volume-weighted index or a special valuation supplied by an issuer.

Basis and funding risk
The perp can remain above or below the reference for an extended period. Persistent positive funding can turn a profitable price thesis into a losing carry trade; negative funding can benefit longs while signaling that the market is crowded in the other direction. Compare expected holding time with the venue’s funding history and caps rather than treating one quoted rate as permanent.
Liquidity and trading-hours risk
RWA books may be shallow, especially when the reference exchange is closed. Spreads and slippage can widen during overnight sessions, holidays or a market halt. A stop order is not guaranteed to fill at its trigger, and a liquidation engine may execute through several price levels. Review depth at the intended size and the venue’s policy for closed or halted markets.
Legal, issuer and counterparty risk
Determine who issues or defines the reference, where the product is legally available, which users are eligible, and whether the product is synthetic, backed or redeemable. Read the treatment of dividends, splits, mergers, ticker changes, delistings and market suspensions. A contract can continue to exist while its reference undergoes a corporate action, but the adjustment method may materially change its value.
A due-diligence checklist for comparing venues
| Area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Oracle | Source markets, aggregation, update frequency, stale-data threshold, confidence checks and fallback behavior |
| Funding | Formula, TWAP window, interval, cap, interest component and who receives the payment |
| Collateral | Accepted assets, haircuts, cross- or isolated-margin treatment and whether tokenized securities qualify |
| Leverage and liquidation | Initial and maintenance margin, liquidation penalty, partial close rules, insurance fund and auto-deleveraging |
| Execution | Order-book depth, spread, trading hours, price limits and behavior during halts or oracle outages |
| Settlement and custody | Blockchain, quote asset, withdrawal process, custody model and smart-contract upgrade authority |
| Corporate actions | Rules for dividends, splits, mergers, symbol changes, delistings and reference-market closures |
| Rights and jurisdiction | Whether the position conveys any claim on the underlying, plus geographic restrictions and user eligibility |
What the market data can—and cannot—tell you
Descriptions of individual venues show product designs, not a market-wide performance record. There is no established market-wide RWA-perpetual volume, default-rate or return statistic in the available evidence, so a venue’s advertised leverage or list of assets should not be presented as a total for the sector. Treat each contract as a separate derivative with its own oracle, liquidity, legal terms and failure modes.
Quick Recap
Practical decision framework
- Identify the exposure. Decide whether you need directional price exposure, ownership rights or redemption. If you need voting, dividends or a claim on an asset, a perp alone does not provide those rights.
- Model the carry. Estimate funding debits or credits for the planned holding period and include trading fees, spread and expected slippage.
- Stress the mark. Test a gap while the reference market is closed, a stale oracle, a wider spread and a sudden funding reversal.
- Set leverage from the liquidation rule. Use the venue’s maintenance-margin and penalty schedule, not the headline maximum, to determine a survivable position size.
- Read the exceptional-event clauses. Confirm what happens during an oracle outage, corporate action, delisting, market halt, chain interruption or venue insolvency.
- Monitor after entry. Track index health, funding, margin ratio, liquidity and announcements; an RWA perp can become riskier without any change in the underlying asset’s quoted price.
