rclone mount gives applications filesystem-style access to a configured Google Drive path through a local mount point; it does not, by itself, download the whole folder as a separate local copy. A sync or copy operation transfers files between locations. Choose a mount for access through a filesystem path, and choose sync or copy when you need a transfer or separate copy.
What is the difference between mounting and syncing?
The difference is the outcome. A mount presents remote files through a local filesystem interface. You can point a compatible application at the mounted path and have it browse or open remote content. A sync or copy operation moves files from a source to a destination; the result is a set of transferred files at that destination.

That distinction matters when deciding whether a workflow needs ongoing access to Drive or a copy that can be used independently of the mount. With a mount, file access depends on the remote connection and the mount’s behavior. With a transfer, the destination contains files that were copied there, subject to the chosen command, direction, and options.

How the two workflows behave
Mount: work through a local path
A mount connects a configured remote path to a local mount point. Applications interact with that point as a filesystem location, while rclone mediates access to the remote files. Depending on the application and access pattern, content can be requested as it is needed rather than transferred in full up front. The mount documentation also describes chunked reading, which can request only the portions an application actually reads.
This can suit a workflow where you need to browse or open files without maintaining a full local copy. But the path is an access layer, not proof that every remote item is present on disk. Network availability and the way the application uses files therefore matter. A workflow that expects every filesystem operation to behave exactly as it would on a local disk may need cache configuration—or may be better served by a transfer.
Sync or copy: transfer files to a destination
Sync and copy are transfer operations, not mounted views. They move files from one location to another, where the destination can hold a separate copy. This is useful when the requirement is to have files at a local or other remote destination, rather than to access them through a live mount.

Before running a transfer, establish which location is the source and which is the destination, check any filters, and understand what the selected command does with files already at the destination. The correct direction and deletion behavior depend on the command and its options; they are not interchangeable details. In particular, do not assume that every transfer command preserves destination-only files or handles them the same way.
Comparison at a glance
| Question | Mount | Sync or copy |
|---|---|---|
| What do you get? | A filesystem-style path to remote content. | Files transferred to a destination as a separate copy or update. |
| Does it create a full local copy? | Not by itself. A configured VFS cache can use local disk, but a mount is not equivalent to downloading the whole folder. | A local destination can hold transferred files; required space depends on what is transferred. |
| When is remote content accessed? | As applications access files; chunked reading can request only portions actually read. | During the transfer operation. |
| How does it handle unreliable cloud operations? | Mount does not retry uploads in the same way without making local copies; VFS caching can improve reliability. | rclone says sync and copy cope with cloud-storage unreliability using retries. |
| Can application compatibility require local disk? | Yes. Without caching, some operations, including simultaneous reading and writing, are not possible. Cache modes improve compatibility at the cost of disk space. | The transfer produces destination files rather than exposing the VFS interface. |
| What about Google Docs? | VFS may report an unknown or zero size, and some application/OS combinations may not download these files correctly. | rclone says sync and copy handle Google Docs transfers correctly by treating their size specially. |
The mount-versus-transfer reliability distinction is not just about convenience. The rclone project explains that filesystems expect operations to be fully reliable, while cloud storage is not. Its mount documentation notes that sync and copy can use retries to cope with cloud-storage unreliability, whereas a mount cannot retry uploads in the same way without local upload copies. See the project’s mount documentation for the explanation and qualifications.
What the mount cache changes
A VFS cache is local disk space used to make mounted access work better with applications that expect more conventional filesystem behavior. Caching is a trade-off: it can improve compatibility and the handling of writes, but the cache occupies local storage. The amount required depends on the files and workload; the documentation does not establish a universal capacity that fits every Drive folder.

Choose a mode for the access pattern
- No cache: avoids the disk use of a VFS cache, but some operations, such as simultaneous reading and writing, are not possible.
writesmode: buffers writes and read/write files. Read-only files are read directly from the remote.fullmode: buffers reads as well as writes, so it can use disk for content that is only being read.
The mode names describe different costs, not a ranking where the most comprehensive option is automatically best. If an application only reads files, using a mode that buffers reads may spend local disk for a behavior the workflow does not need. If an application writes files or expects read/write behavior, a cache may be necessary, and its storage use should be part of the setup decision. rclone documents these VFS behaviors in its mount reference.

A save through a cached mount does not necessarily mean that the remote upload has already completed at the instant the application reports success. rclone writes a cached file back after the application closes it and it has remained unused for the configured --vfs-write-back interval. That timing matters if another device, user, or process needs the updated remote file immediately after a local save.
When a workflow depends on a file being available remotely right away, account for the write-back interval and verify the remote result before treating the upload as complete. A cached mount is still useful for filesystem-style work, but its local write lifecycle is different from a transfer job whose purpose is to send files to a destination.

Google Drive details that can change the decision
Google Docs do not behave like ordinary sized files in every VFS workflow
Google Docs can have an unknown or zero size through VFS. As a result, an application or operating-system combination may not download or handle them correctly through a mount. The limitation is about the VFS path and software interaction; it does not mean that Google Docs cannot be transferred. rclone’s Drive documentation says sync and copy handle these transfers correctly by handling the size specially. If Google Docs are central to the workflow, test the actual application and operating system combination before relying on the mount.
Many small files can make transfers take longer
The rclone Google Drive backend documentation gives an approximate transfer limitation of about two files per second. It also says individual files may transfer much faster and that many small files can take a long time. This is an approximate operational note in the project’s current, undated documentation—not a guaranteed speed for a particular account or a promise that every transfer will run at that rate. The number and size of files, and Drive’s limits, affect the experience. Consult the Google Drive backend documentation for its current qualification.

Choose the workflow that matches the job
Use a mount when an application needs access through a path
A mount is the natural choice when a program needs to browse or open remote files through a local filesystem location and you do not require a full transferred copy. It is most suitable when the application tolerates remote-backed access and its file operations fit the configured cache behavior.
Best Value
- Check whether the application reads, writes, or reads and writes the same files.
- Decide whether the no-cache behavior is sufficient or whether
writesorfullcaching is needed. - Allow local disk for the selected cache mode, especially if reads as well as writes are buffered.
- For cached writes, include the configured write-back delay in expectations about when a file is remotely available.
- If the workflow includes Google Docs, test those files with the actual application and operating system.
Use sync or copy when the goal is a transferred copy
Choose a transfer when another location needs its own files—for example, a local destination used independently of the mount. The destination needs enough space for the data being transferred if it is local. Because a transfer has explicit source and destination locations, confirm the direction and the command’s treatment of existing and destination-only files before running it. If the job is interrupted or cloud operations are unreliable, rclone’s documented retry behavior for sync and copy is an advantage over relying on a mount to retry uploads without local copies.
Do not treat a mount as a backup or a transfer as live access
These methods solve different problems. A mounted path gives access to remote content; it is not automatically a second, independent copy. A transfer creates files at a destination, but those files do not become a live view of later Drive changes merely because they were copied once. Decide whether the requirement is access, a copy, or both, and choose a workflow accordingly rather than expecting one mode to provide the other’s outcome.
Setup considerations before relying on either option
This comparison does not prescribe a universal command line because the appropriate remote path, mount point, operating system, cache mode, filters, and destination depend on the setup. Use the current rclone command reference for exact flags and platform requirements. Mount support and available flags can change across releases, so check the documentation for the version you install.
There is also a time-sensitive Google Drive authentication consideration: the rclone Drive backend documentation says the shared default client ID is being retired during 2026 and advises users to create and use their own client ID to avoid interruption. Because the retirement is tied to a changing date and current documentation, check the Drive backend page when configuring a new connection rather than assuming the shared default remains available.
