To enable Chrome’s stronger phishing protection on a computer, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Security, then select Enhanced protection under Safe Browsing. Chrome’s standard phishing and malware warnings are already on by default; Enhanced protection is an optional level that adds more proactive warnings and sends more browsing-related information to Google.

This setting is specifically for Google Chrome. Chromium is the open-source browser project that Chrome and other browsers are built on, but a Chromium-based browser may use different controls, protection services and privacy practices. The steps below explain Chrome’s option, what Google says it does, and how to find the relevant protection in Brave, Edge or another Chromium-derived browser.

Turn on Enhanced protection in desktop Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome on your computer.
  2. Select More, the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.
  3. In Settings, select Privacy and security, then Security.
  4. Under Safe Browsing, select Enhanced protection.

That is the desktop Chrome path: Settings > Privacy and security > Security > Safe Browsing > Enhanced protection. Google describes Enhanced protection as Chrome’s highest Safe Browsing level. The labels or path may vary by platform or Chrome release, so if the menu does not match, look for the Safe Browsing section under Security in Chrome settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need to install a separate extension or buy a product to enable this built-in browser setting. Chrome’s regular phishing and malware warnings are already on by default. Choosing Enhanced protection changes the Safe Browsing level; it is not the step that first turns on all warnings.

If you are following these steps in a browser other than Chrome, do not assume the same menu or setting exists. Chromium-based browsers can use different security services and may not offer Chrome’s Enhanced protection mode at all. See the browser comparison below for the documented differences between Chrome, Brave and Microsoft Edge.

What changes when you choose Enhanced protection?

Chrome’s Safe Browsing levels differ in how they identify threats and what information they share. Standard protection checks sites, extensions and downloads against lists of unsafe items. Chrome periodically downloads a recent copy of Google’s lists to your device. For an unfamiliar site, Chrome may send an obfuscated portion of its URL through a privacy server before Google checks it. If Chrome detects suspicious behavior, Standard protection can send additional URL or page information.

Enhanced protection sends more browsing-related information to Google in real time. Google’s Chrome Help says that this can include visited URLs, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity and system information. Google says the additional information helps it identify potentially risky sites, downloads and extensions, including threats it has not previously identified. Some suspicious downloads may also be submitted for additional scans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, the two settings differ both in their approach to threats and in the information they share. Standard protection uses downloaded copies of unsafe lists as part of its checks, while Enhanced protection provides Google with more information in real time to help identify potentially risky activity, including threats not previously known to Google. Enhanced protection also expands the kinds of risks for which Chrome may warn you: sites, downloads and extensions are all part of the feature description.

That does not mean Standard protection never sends information, or that Enhanced protection guarantees detection. Standard protection may send additional URL or page information if Chrome detects suspicious behavior. Enhanced protection shares more browsing-related information as a routine part of its real-time protection approach. If you are deciding between the levels, the core trade-off is stronger, more proactive checks against greater information sharing with Google.

Google describes the Enhanced protection approach this way: “Enhanced protection sends more information about your activity to Google in real time to offer stronger, more customized protection.” Google also says the feature does not noticeably slow down the browser or device. That is Google’s description, not an independent performance measurement.

Setting Protection approach Information sharing described by Google
Standard protection Checks sites, extensions and downloads against unsafe lists; Chrome periodically downloads recent copies of those lists. It can send additional URL or page information if suspicious behavior is detected. An obfuscated portion of an unfamiliar site’s URL may be sent through a privacy server before Google checks it. Additional URL or page information can be sent when suspicious behavior is detected.
Enhanced protection Adds more proactive warnings about potentially risky sites, downloads and extensions, including threats not previously identified by Google. Some suspicious downloads can receive additional scans. More browsing-related information is sent to Google in real time, including visited URLs, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity and system information.

This comparison describes Google’s stated Chrome behavior. It is not a quantified claim about how many phishing attempts either setting blocks. The information listed for Enhanced protection is also a description of categories Google says can be included; it should not be read as a claim that every item is sent in the same way for every visit.

Choose the setting based on your privacy and protection preferences

Enhanced protection is the stronger option if you want Chrome to use more information to look for potentially risky activity, including threats absent from Google’s known unsafe lists. Its broader warnings can be useful when you want Chrome to look beyond items already identified as unsafe. Standard protection still provides phishing and malware warnings, but uses a different approach and can send additional information when Chrome detects suspicious behavior.

Consider how comfortable you are with the additional data sharing before switching. Enhanced protection involves more browsing-related information going to Google in real time, including categories such as visited URLs, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity and system information. That is an important part of the decision, not a minor technical detail. If limiting the information sent to Google is your priority, review the descriptions of both levels and make an informed choice rather than treating the word “Enhanced” as an automatic recommendation for everyone.

There is no need to interpret Standard protection as no protection: Chrome’s phishing and malware warnings are on by default, and Standard protection checks against unsafe lists. Nor should Enhanced protection be interpreted as complete prevention. A browser can warn about risks it identifies, but no setting establishes that every phishing page or malicious file will be detected. A warning feature is one layer of protection, not a promise that an attack cannot succeed.

Google does not provide a dated efficacy percentage in its Chrome Help description that would establish a specific reduction in phishing risk for this setting. For that reason, it is more accurate to compare what the settings check and what information they share than to claim that Enhanced protection blocks a particular share of attacks.

Chrome protection is different from Google Account Enhanced Safe Browsing

Chrome’s Safe Browsing choice is managed in the browser’s Settings > Privacy and security > Security menu. Google also offers Enhanced Safe Browsing as a Google Account setting. They are related but are not the same control, and the account feature has its own conditions.

Google says account-level Enhanced Safe Browsing can extend protection across Chrome and Gmail. It turns on Chrome Enhanced protection when you are signed in to Chrome and Sync is enabled without a custom passphrase. If you do not meet those stated conditions, do not assume that changing the account setting alone will turn on Chrome’s browser-level option in every situation.

To choose Chrome’s Safe Browsing level directly, use the Chrome settings path described above. The account-level feature is managed separately through your Google Account. Google says turning off account-level Enhanced Safe Browsing may take up to 24 hours to complete, so a change there may not take effect immediately. Keep that timing in mind if you are checking whether account-level protection has been disabled.

In short, the browser setting answers, “Which Safe Browsing level is Chrome using?” The account setting answers a different question about the Google Account feature that can extend protection across Chrome and Gmail. Do not conflate the two or assume changing one is identical to changing the other.

Phishing protection in other Chromium browsers

Chromium is the browser project that Chrome and other browsers are based on, but that does not mean every Chromium-based browser has Chrome’s menu, Google’s protection controls or the same data-handling practices. A browser maker can expose its own settings and services. Check that browser’s current security settings and help documentation rather than assuming Chrome’s instructions apply.

Browser Relevant protection control What to know
Google Chrome Safe Browsing > Enhanced protection in Settings > Privacy and security > Security. Google’s highest Safe Browsing level; it shares more browsing-related information with Google in real time and adds more proactive warnings.
Brave Use Brave’s own Safe Browsing controls and help instructions. Brave says it uses Chromium’s Safe Browsing implementation but does not expose Google’s Enhanced protection mode. Do not look for or assume the Chrome option is available.
Microsoft Edge Microsoft Defender SmartScreen under Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security. SmartScreen provides Microsoft’s phishing and malicious-download warnings. Edge’s separate Enhance your security on the web feature has Balanced and Strict modes; Balanced applies added protections to unfamiliar sites, while Strict applies them to all sites and may cause compatibility problems.

In Edge, the distinction between SmartScreen and Enhance your security on the web matters. SmartScreen is Microsoft’s phishing and malicious-download warning control. The separate security enhancement feature changes how added protections are applied: Balanced applies them to unfamiliar sites; Strict applies them to all sites and can create compatibility problems. The names and purposes are not interchangeable, and Edge does not use Chrome’s menu path for SmartScreen.

Brave likewise should not be treated as Chrome with a different logo. Brave says it relies on Chromium’s Safe Browsing implementation, but it does not expose Google’s Enhanced protection mode. Follow Brave’s own help instructions for its controls rather than expecting to find Chrome’s Enhanced option or assuming that Chrome’s Google data-sharing description applies unchanged.

For another Chromium-derived browser, search its settings for “Safe Browsing,” “phishing protection” or “security,” then consult that vendor’s documentation for what the protection checks and what information it sends. Verify the browser’s provider and its data-handling explanation. Do not assume Google Account integration, Chrome’s Enhanced mode or Chrome’s privacy behavior carries over simply because the browser is based on Chromium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you cannot change the setting

If Enhanced protection is missing, unavailable or locked, first check that you are following the steps for the browser and platform you are actually using. The option described here is Chrome’s desktop Safe Browsing control, and labels or paths can vary across platforms and releases. A different browser may have a different feature name or provider rather than the Chrome control.

A workplace or school administrator may manage the browser. Google notes that managed users may not be able to change phishing and malware protection. If Chrome says a setting is managed, or the option cannot be selected on a work or school device, contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Also distinguish a browser setting from an account setting when troubleshooting. If you changed Google Account Enhanced Safe Browsing, that is not the same control as selecting a Safe Browsing level in Chrome’s Security settings. If you intend to set the browser’s level, revisit the Chrome menu path directly. If you are managing the account feature, remember Google says turning it off may take up to 24 hours to complete.

What the setting does—and does not—establish

Enhanced protection changes how Chrome looks for and warns about potentially risky sites, downloads and extensions; it does not make Chrome immune to phishing. Google’s help documentation describes the feature and its data handling, but does not establish a dated efficacy percentage that would show how much it reduces phishing risk. Treat browser warnings as useful alerts, not a guarantee that every harmful page or file will be caught.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most useful comparison is therefore specific: Standard protection checks known unsafe lists and can share additional information when suspicious behavior is detected; Enhanced protection sends more information in real time and is designed to help identify potentially risky activity, including threats Google has not previously identified. The choice is between these stated approaches, with a corresponding difference in information sharing—not a guarantee versus no protection.
