In the best-described fatty-acid pathway, stearic acid is modified and shortened into compounds such as 9-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (9-HDA); an alcohol dehydrogenase then converts 9-HDA into the queen-associated compound 9-oxo-2-decenoic acid (9-ODA). The exact blend and the full biosynthetic details are not yet completely settled.
What compounds does a queen bee produce?
For the western honey bee (Apis mellifera), QMP refers to a blend produced by the queen’s mandibular glands. Commonly listed components include:

- (E)-9-oxo-2-decenoic acid (9-ODA)
- Both enantiomers of (E)-9-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (9-HDA)
- Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate (HOB)
- 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylethanol (HVA)
- 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA)
- 10-hydroxydecanoic acid (10-HDAA)
Lists differ because authors do not always use “QMP” in the same way: some mean a classic five-component blend, while others count a broader queen-retinue signal and distinguish the two 9-HDA enantiomers. The queen’s chemical signaling also comes from glands beyond the mandibles, so QMP is not the whole queen signal.
9-ODA is a prominent queen-associated compound, but it should not be confused with 10-HDA. The latter is especially associated with worker mandibular secretions and royal jelly.

How does a queen bee synthesize pheromones?
The best-described fatty-acid route starts with stearic acid, also called octadecanoic acid. A 2018 Scientific Reports study describes a caste-biased pathway in which stearic acid is hydroxylated at either the omega (ω) or omega-minus-one (ω−1) position. The resulting intermediates are shortened through β-oxidation and undergo further oxidation to form signaling compounds. The study’s pathway account associates the queen ω−1 branch with 9-HDA and its conversion to 9-ODA.
- Start with stearic acid: the C18 fatty acid is hydroxylated at ω or ω−1.
- Shorten the intermediate: β-oxidation reduces the carbon chain.
- Form the queen-associated products: the ω−1 route yields 9-HDA, which alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) oxidizes to 9-ODA.
This is a useful outline, not a fully resolved account of every regulatory and enzymatic step. A recent review notes that the biosynthetic pathway for 10-HDA still requires further work to be fully elucidated.

How does queen chemistry compare with worker chemistry?
Mandibular-gland profiles vary by caste and social setting. The pathway described for A. mellifera associates queens with greater amounts of 9-ODA, 9-HDA, HOB, and HVA, while workers are typically richer in 10-HDA and its precursor 10-HDAA. These are relative profile tendencies, not fixed chemical signatures for every individual.
Social context can matter as well. In field-collected parasitic workers of the Cape honey bee subspecies (A. m. capensis), a study found that 9-ODA made up 66.18 ± 1.64% of mandibular-gland fatty-acid content in workers from queenless host colonies, versus 8.08 ± 2.26% in queenright colonies. The queenless workers also had about five times as many ADH transcripts. Those measurements concern that subspecies and field comparison; they do not establish ordinary queen or worker proportions across honey bee colonies.

What does QMP do in a colony?
QMP is associated with attracting workers into the queen’s retinue and with effects on colony reproduction and worker behavior. Reported functions include suppressing worker ovary activation, inhibiting queen rearing, and influencing how quickly workers mature behaviorally. These outcomes arise within a broader signaling system: other queen glands and brood signals also contribute, so they should not all be attributed to the mandibular blend alone.
Is 9-ODA always 80% of queen pheromone?
No single percentage should be treated as universal. A 2016 PLOS ONE article reports an estimate that 9-ODA contributed 80% of total mandibular-gland secretions in mated queens. That is the paper’s estimate for the stated context, not an invariant proportion for every queen; the same article notes that the complete composition of queen-produced compounds was not fully characterized.

What “synthesised” means here
In this topic, “synthesised” means biosynthesized by the bee’s glands and metabolic pathways. The pathway description explains how queen-associated molecules can be made inside the insect; it is not a laboratory recipe for chemically synthesizing QMP.
