A 2011 study showed that a specialized mass spectrometer could detect a valproic-acid-related signal in exhaled breath and that the signal tracked free valproic acid (VPA) in blood in a small group of patients. It was an experimental measurement method, not a home breathalyzer or an established way to choose a patient’s dose.
What “Breathe out for personalised medicine” refers to
The phrase comes from 2011 coverage of research into monitoring valproic acid, a medicine used to treat epilepsy, by analyzing breath. The researchers explored whether a molecule produced during VPA metabolism could provide a readout related to the drug’s free fraction in blood—the portion not bound to proteins.

The idea was to investigate breath as a less invasive sampling route than repeated blood draws. The study did not establish that patients can use a breath test to monitor treatment today.
How the experimental breath analysis worked
Researchers looked for a VPA-related metabolite
The team used extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS) to analyze exhaled breath. Their setup used a minimally modified electrospray source on a commercial quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. They observed a signal at mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) 143 and proposed that it corresponded to 4-hydroxy-VPA-gamma-lactone. The paper also discusses 5-hydroxy-VPA-delta-lactone as a less favored possible assignment, so the identity was not presented without qualification. Gamez and colleagues’ 2011 paper

Breath sampling did not make this a consumer test
In the researchers’ setup, breath analysis avoided sample storage and pre-treatment. But the analysis still depended on specialized mass spectrometry, and the authors identified broader challenges for breath analysis: separating, identifying, and quantifying compounds, as well as standardizing methods. The experiment was a laboratory analytical approach, not a small wearable or over-the-counter device.
What the study found—and how much it establishes
The reported results came from six male patients, with 36 measurements, and three male controls, with 18 measurements. The candidate signal was consistently detected in the patient measurements and was comparable to background in the controls. In this small dataset, signal intensity had a linear association with the free VPA fraction measured in blood (R² = 0.89, p < 0.01). Its association with weight-adjusted daily dose was weaker (R² = 0.76, p < 0.01). These are study-specific correlations, not measures of diagnostic accuracy or proof that a breath result can safely determine a dose. Gamez et al., Chemical Communications, 2011

The authors also reported estimated VPA half-life values of 7 to 10.5 hours from several volunteers. They described the work as pharmacokinetic tracking, not validation of a dosing algorithm. Their own summary was: “This study is only a first example of how EESI-MS can be used for following the metabolism of drugs in vivo.” Gamez et al., 2011
Why measuring VPA levels can matter
VPA binds to blood proteins, and the free fraction can vary with factors such as serum albumin and displacement by some other strongly protein-bound medicines. The 2011 paper explains that this variability is one reason therapeutic drug monitoring can help clinicians consider dosage adjustment and side-effect prevention. It also describes blood testing every few weeks initially for new patients while the therapeutic window is being established. This is background from the paper, not individual medical guidance. Is this breath test available or used in care now?
The cited sources do not establish that this specific EESI-MS method has since been clinically validated, received regulatory authorization, become commercially available, or entered routine care. A 2022 paper discusses pathway-driven breath metabolomics in epilepsy, but its available record does not resolve the implementation status of this particular VPA test. 2022 breath-metabolomics article record
For now, the defensible conclusion is limited: the 2011 work demonstrated a promising research signal associated with free VPA in blood in a small, all-male sample. It does not show that a breath result can replace blood monitoring or guide treatment decisions.

- What is the EldonCard: You can learn your blood type in just a couple of minutes using the Eldon Blood Typing Kit. The EldonCard is used for ABO-and RHD blood grouping. The card allows individuals to understand what their blood group is. The Blood Typing cards are accurate and can be used in the home and once completed the card can be covered for future reference
- Why do I need the EldonCard: Your blood type is inherited from your parents and determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens and antibodies. The EldonCard is made of a special type of plastic upon which dried antibody formulations are placed. The EldonCard at home test kit is a reliable, durable, and flexible point-of-care blood typing system
- How EldonCard Works: The type of antigen you have tells us what your blood type is. While there are more than 20 blood-type systems, A, B, O and Rh (Rhesus) factors are by far the most important types. The blood is drawn by using a single-use safety lancet, which prevents accidental piercing by anyone picking up the lancet after it has been used. This home medical test is an essential part of blood testing supplies
- EldonCard Accuracy: The EldonCard is extremely accurate. It has been tested against the standard blood typing procedure using directly agglutinating antibodies. Tests have been performed at several laboratories in different countries and the results are in-line with laboratory-based tests
- Where and Who can use it: EldonCard health test kit is used by hospitals, blood banks, blood centers, where it can be used for general blood typing and for bedside testing. Given the flexibility, durability and accuracy of the EldonCard, it can be used outside hospitals and clinic environments. Often it is used within practitioner clinics, humanitarian settings, remote locations, battlefields, classrooms, private homes, and in many emergency situations calling for a speedy and reliable test
