1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: A sufficiently powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computer could threaten Bitcoin held in Lightning channels by breaking the elliptic-curve signatures that authorize funding, commitment, and settlement transactions. It could also attack signed Lightning messages and keys used away from the blockchain. Today’s quantum machines have not demonstrated that capability, and no dependable date exists for when such a machine will be available. The practical response is preparation for a migration to post-quantum cryptography—not treating current hardware wallets or offline signing as a permanent defense.
What a Lightning channel actually protects
Lightning does not keep a balance in an independent ledger with no Bitcoin transaction behind it. Each channel is anchored by an on-chain funding output. The two participants then exchange signed commitment transactions that describe how that funding should be divided at the current state. BOLT #5 describes this as two parties conducting transactions off-chain by giving each other “a cross-signed commitment transaction, which describes the current state of the channel (basically, the current balance).”

The funding output
Opening a channel creates a Bitcoin transaction whose output can be spent only with the signatures required by the channel construction. In the common two-party design, both peers must authorize a spend. BOLT #2 requires valid ECDSA signatures for channel funding and commitment messages. The funding transaction therefore establishes the capital at risk, while later commitment transactions decide which party can claim what amount.
Commitment transactions and scripts
Every payment updates the commitment state. A commitment transaction includes outputs for each participant and may include hash time-locked contracts (HTLCs) that route an in-flight payment. BOLT #3 specifies the scripts, revocation keys, delayed local outputs, and HTLC settlement paths that make those transactions enforceable on Bitcoin.

A local output is normally delayed by a relative timelock. That delay gives the other party time to detect an old commitment transaction and use the revocation path if the counterparty tried to cheat. The channel’s security therefore combines signatures, carefully designed scripts, and time for a node to react.
How channels close
- Mutual close: both peers agree on a final transaction and sign it.
- Unilateral close: one peer broadcasts its latest commitment transaction. The other peer must monitor the blockchain and claim any available outputs or respond to a breach.
- Revoked-commitment close: a peer broadcasts an outdated state. The counterparty can use the revocation private key to take the encumbered output immediately, subject to the script rules.
BOLT #5 explicitly requires blockchain monitoring once a node has funds at stake. Monitoring is not an optional convenience: the protocol’s ordinary anti-cheating mechanism depends on noticing a unilateral close during the relevant timelock window.
What a quantum computer would change
The relevant threat is not that a quantum processor makes a Lightning payment travel faster or guesses a channel balance. The threat is cryptanalysis. Current Bitcoin and Lightning authorization relies on elliptic-curve public-key cryptography, including ECDSA signatures and elliptic-curve-derived keys. A sufficiently capable quantum computer running a fault-tolerant implementation of the appropriate algorithms could derive a private key from a public key or produce a forged signature that Bitcoin’s validation rules accept.
From a public key to an unauthorized spend
In a conventional attack, a thief needs the private key or a transaction that the owner has genuinely signed. If quantum cryptanalysis recovers the private key corresponding to an exposed public key, the attacker can create a valid-looking signature. Nodes and miners would see a transaction satisfying the existing script, even though the owner never approved it.

The exact opportunity would depend on the channel type, which keys have been revealed, the transaction state, and the implementation. A quantum attacker might target a funding output, a commitment transaction, a node identity key, a revocation-related key, or another signed object. “Quantum attack” is therefore a family of possible failures rather than one universal Lightning exploit.
Why fault tolerance matters
NIST’s 2024 assessment says that “fault-tolerant algorithms pose the primary threat.” Small, noisy experimental quantum devices do not provide the long, error-corrected computation needed for a practical attack on deployed elliptic-curve systems. The security concern begins when a machine can preserve enough logical qubits and run the relevant algorithm reliably for the required computation.
The PRX Quantum paper Securing Elliptic Curve Cryptocurrencies against Quantum Vulnerabilities: Resource Estimates and Mitigations (2025) says in its popular summary that optimized attacks could derive a user’s secret key “in just a few minutes.” That is a model-based resource estimate for a fast-acting quantum computer, not a measurement of what current machines can do. It is a reason to plan migration, not evidence that today’s devices can empty a Lightning channel.

Why this is called “stealing” rather than ordinary channel cheating
Lightning already has a defense against one kind of theft: broadcasting a known revoked commitment. The revocation key lets the honest party take the offending output immediately, while the attacker loses the amount at stake. This is a protocol response to a peer using a transaction that it really signed in the past but promised not to use.

Quantum theft would attack the authorization assumption beneath that mechanism. If an attacker can derive a signing key or forge a signature, it may authorize a transaction or state that the owner never signed. There may be no genuine revoked commitment for the victim to identify, and the revocation process cannot restore a key that has been cryptographically compromised. A breach could therefore look like a valid spend under the existing rules rather than a detectable attempt to reuse an old state.
Which Lightning components could be exposed
| Component | Why it matters | Potential quantum consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Funding transaction | Locks the channel’s on-chain capital behind signature conditions. | A recovered or forged key could authorize an otherwise invalid spend, depending on the output and what public keys are exposed. |
| Commitment transactions | Represent the latest off-chain balance and the unilateral-close path. | An attacker could attempt to create or authorize a state the owner did not approve. |
| Revocation keys | Allow the honest peer to punish use of an outdated commitment. | Compromise could undermine breach remedies or let an attacker manipulate a penalty path. |
| HTLC and settlement paths | Control conditional payment claims and timeout refunds. | Forged signatures could interfere with who is allowed to settle or refund an output. |
| Node identity keys | Identify peers and authenticate parts of the Lightning connection and gossip system. | Impersonation, routing disruption, or fraudulent peer messages could become possible even without immediately spending a funding output. |
| Off-chain signed data | Invoices, offers, gossip announcements, transport handshakes, and payment-related messages carry protocol trust. | Forgery or impersonation could redirect payments, corrupt network information, or bypass assumptions that are not protected by an on-chain signature. |
The September 2026 PQLN preprint argues that a post-quantum design must cover gossip, peer transport, invoices, payment onions, and offers—not just Bitcoin transactions. It is a research proposal, not a deployed Lightning standard, so its scope should be treated as a design warning rather than an upgrade instruction.
When could this happen?
No authoritative source establishes a dependable calendar date for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. NIST frames the issue around future fault-tolerant systems, and technical progress does not translate into a reliable launch date for an attack-capable machine.
That uncertainty does not make the issue purely hypothetical. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 paper discusses a “harvest now decrypt later” concern: an adversary can collect protected distributed-ledger data today and try to reveal useful information later when a sufficiently powerful quantum computer exists. Not every Lightning message remains valuable for years, but public keys, channel history, routing information, and archived signed data can give a future attacker material to analyze. Migration also takes time because the network must coordinate new cryptography, software, wallets, hardware, and channel policies.

There is no evidence in the available estimates that present-day quantum machines can steal Lightning funds. The correct statement is conditional: current elliptic-curve assumptions remain in use, and those assumptions would fail against a sufficiently capable fault-tolerant quantum computer.
Is the Lightning Network quantum-safe today?
No. “Quantum-safe” would mean that the cryptographic constructions remain secure against the relevant quantum algorithms, not merely that keys are stored carefully. Current Lightning BOLT specifications require ECDSA signatures and elliptic-curve key operations. They are designed to resist classical attackers, operational mistakes, and dishonest channel peers—not a future machine that can solve the underlying mathematical problem at scale.
A hardware wallet, air-gapped computer, strong passphrase, or offline signing still helps prevent theft by malware, phishing, remote compromise, and accidental key exposure. Those controls do not make ECDSA resistant to quantum key recovery. If the public key and the cryptographic scheme itself are vulnerable, keeping the signing device offline does not change the algorithm’s security property.

What each group should do now
Lightning node operators
- Keep chain monitoring reliable. Maintain redundant blockchain access, alerts for unilateral closes, and enough operational capacity to respond before timelocks expire. This is required for ordinary breach response even before any quantum threat appears.
- Document channel inventory. Record funding outputs, channel types, software versions, key-rotation procedures, and the maximum value that could be exposed in a compromise. Do not assume every channel construction presents the same public-key exposure.
- Test recovery procedures. Verify that backups, watchtower arrangements where used, and emergency transaction workflows can restore service without introducing a second key-management failure.
- Track standards work. Follow NIST’s post-quantum standardization and Lightning implementation discussions. Do not deploy an unreviewed preprint as if it were a ratified BOLT.
Bitcoin and Lightning users
- Use hardware wallets and offline signing for ordinary private-key hygiene, while understanding that they are not quantum protection.
- Limit the amount held in a hot Lightning node to what its availability and monitoring practices can support.
- Keep software updated and retain a tested backup and channel-recovery plan.
- Ask custodial or hosted Lightning providers how they plan to support cryptographic migration; a provider’s current security practices do not answer its post-quantum readiness.
Protocol and wallet developers
- Define the migration target. Select post-quantum signature and key-establishment schemes with explicit security assumptions and independent review.
- Measure protocol overhead. Post-quantum keys and signatures are generally larger than elliptic-curve equivalents. Account for message size, bandwidth, latency, memory, invoice encoding, gossip propagation, and storage.
- Cover every signed surface. An on-chain replacement that leaves peer authentication, gossip, invoices, onions, or offers on vulnerable assumptions is incomplete.
- Design coexistence and upgrade paths. Specify how old and new channels interact, how a peer signals support, how funds move from legacy outputs, and what happens when one side cannot upgrade.
- Plan emergency action. Define how software would pause new channels, move funds, revoke vulnerable credentials, and coordinate a network-wide response if a credible attack capability appeared.
How to compare post-quantum proposals
No single proposal should be judged only by whether its signature is mathematically resistant to the known quantum attack. Lightning is latency-sensitive and message-heavy, so an upgrade must work operationally as well as cryptographically.
Best Value
| Decision criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Security assumptions | What hard problem does the scheme rely on, and what evidence supports its resistance to classical and quantum attacks? |
| Compatibility | Can existing channels, wallets, hardware, and recovery tools continue operating, or must funds move to new outputs? |
| Key and signature size | How much larger are transactions, channel announcements, invoices, and peer messages? |
| Bandwidth and latency | Will larger authentication data slow channel setup, routing, gossip, or mobile connections? |
| Upgrade path | Is there a staged, reversible migration with clear support negotiation and failure handling? |
| Protocol coverage | Does the design protect only Bitcoin transactions, or also transport, gossip, invoices, payment onions, and offers? |
These trade-offs explain why migration cannot be reduced to swapping one signature opcode. A larger signature may be acceptable for an on-chain transaction but expensive when repeated across every channel message and gossip update. Conversely, preserving old message formats may leave an authentication surface vulnerable.
Common misunderstandings and failure modes
“A quantum computer can steal coins right now.”
There is no demonstrated current capability for that claim. The threat requires a sufficiently large, fault-tolerant machine and a practical attack implementation.
“Revocation makes a channel quantum-proof.”
Revocation punishes a peer that broadcasts a known outdated commitment. It does not protect an ECDSA key from recovery or a signature from forgery.
Recommended Free Tools
“Keeping the node offline solves it.”
Offline signing reduces conventional key theft, but a future attack on the cryptographic scheme can use exposed public information. Availability also matters: a Lightning channel that cannot monitor the chain can still lose its ordinary breach-response window.
“Only on-chain Bitcoin needs new cryptography.”
Lightning relies on authenticated peers and signed off-chain objects. A complete migration must address those surfaces as well as funding and settlement transactions.
The practical conclusion
Lightning’s present security model is coherent against classical threats: a funding output anchors the money, commitment transactions encode the balance, signatures authorize state, and monitoring plus revocation handle dishonest closes. A cryptographically relevant quantum computer would challenge the signature and key assumptions underneath all of those controls. No reliable date is known, and current machines are not evidence of an active theft capability, but replacing vulnerable cryptography across Bitcoin and Lightning will require years of engineering and coordination. Operators should maintain monitoring and recovery now, while developers build and test a migration that protects both on-chain authorization and the entire off-chain protocol.
