Preloading does not remove the release-time lock. A release-day patch is a separate network update whose size and necessity depend on the individual game. A disc installs game data but remains the physical token the console checks when you play, so the disc must be inserted. Digital purchases are personal, non-commercial licenses rather than transferable files. In the United States, preorder cancellation normally depends on when you paid and whether the main download has started. Sony says production of discs for new PlayStation-console games will stop in January 2028, but discs for games released before that date are not being declared invalid.
What happens when you preorder a PS5 game digitally?
PlayStation Store treats a digital preorder as a purchase made before the advertised release date. PlayStation’s March 2026 terms state that when you order or purchase a product, you buy “a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” The terms also say you are charged at the time of the order, even though some content may remain unavailable until the listed release date.

After payment, the preorder appears in your Library and in the PlayStation Store and PlayStation App accounts associated with the purchase. The account entitlement is what authorizes the download and, once the release time arrives, the launch of the game. The files stored on the console do not by themselves grant an earlier right to play.

If automatic downloads are configured and the PS5 remains connected to the internet in rest mode, the console starts downloading the preorder when Sony makes the preload available. This is preloading: the game can occupy SSD space before launch so that you are not downloading the entire title at release time.

Preloading is not early access. A release-time lock still controls when the account can start the game. The exact preload window is set by the publisher and platform for that title; it is not a universal number of hours before launch. A console can therefore show a nearly complete installation while still refusing to start the game until the published release moment.
Settings that allow a hands-off preload
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose System, then Power Saving, and open Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, enable automatic download and automatic installation options that you want to use.
- Leave the console in rest mode rather than fully powered off during the publisher’s preload window.
Menu wording can change with system software updates, but the requirements are the same: an account that owns the preorder, enough free SSD capacity, an internet connection, and rest-mode networking. If the console is off, disconnected, short on storage, or signed into a different account, the preload may not begin.
What is a release-day patch?
A release-day patch is software delivered over PlayStation Network after the publisher’s shipped build was finalized. It can correct bugs, add performance improvements, update content, or replace files that were already on a disc or in a preload package. It is separate from the license that proves you bought or are entitled to use the game.

There is no PS5-wide rule that every game requires its day-one update. Whether a game starts without the newest patch, which features work offline, and whether online services reject an old build are decisions made by the individual publisher and game. A disc normally contains the version that was manufactured for release; a digital preload contains the files supplied for that download window. Either format can then receive updates.

Do not rely on a supposed “average” patch size. Sony’s primary support material does not publish a cross-game average, and patch sizes vary with the title, platform region, update design, and files being replaced. Check the game’s own release notes or publisher support page for the exact version and any launch requirement.
Automatic downloading and installation
PS5 can automatically download game and application updates while in rest mode. When you start a game, the console also checks for the newest available version. In automatic-update settings you can choose to download and install updates automatically, or download an update but wait before installing it.
Waiting to install can be useful when a game is suspended and you do not want an automatic update to close it. The trade-off is that you may be unable to use online features until the update is installed, and an offline mode may be limited by the game. To maximize the chance that a launch update is ready, keep the PS5 connected in rest mode, enable automatic downloads, and leave adequate storage space.
Is a PS5 digital game something you own?
You receive an account entitlement, not a transferable copy of the software. Under the March 2026 PlayStation terms, the transaction grants a personal license for private, non-commercial use. Signing into the purchasing PlayStation account lets the console verify that entitlement and download the product again where the applicable account and platform rules permit.

That structure differs from owning a physical object that can ordinarily be handed to another person. Selling, lending, or giving someone the account that bought a digital game is not the same as reselling a boxed disc, and account sharing remains subject to PlayStation’s rules. The practical questions for a digital buyer are therefore account security, continued access to the account, storage, and network access for downloads and updates.
How the disc license works
A PS5 disc has two roles. It supplies much of the game’s installed data, and it acts as the physical authorization token the console checks when launching the installed game. After installation, the PS5 still needs the matching disc in its drive each time you play. Removing the disc or inserting a different game prevents that disc-based license check from succeeding.
The disc is not a substitute for every online requirement. A title may still need a patch, an internet connection for online modes, additional downloadable content, or an account with the publisher. Conversely, the presence of a disc does not mean a game has no playable content until an update is downloaded; the shipped build and the publisher’s offline design determine what works.

PS4 disc upgrades on PS5
Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade instructions make the continuing validation rule explicit: after downloading the PS5 version, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. The PS4 disc must remain inserted, and it must be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account. The upgrade does not turn the disc into a free-standing digital entitlement that works without the disc.

Disc-drive requirement
A boxed disc edition cannot be authenticated by a PS5 model with no disc drive. Before buying, match the format to your hardware: a disc edition requires a console with a functioning drive, while a digital edition requires the account entitlement and the ability to download the game. A disc install also needs internal storage; the disc is not a way to avoid installing game data.

Both formats can end up needing the same patch and both can be affected by server shutdowns or account restrictions for online services. The main distinction is what proves entitlement: the signed-in account for a digital purchase, or the inserted disc for a disc edition.

A preorder paid more than 14 days before its release can generally be cancelled at any time before release, provided the main product has not started downloading or streaming.

Paid 14 days or less before release
If payment occurred 14 days or less before release, cancellation is generally available up to 14 days after payment, again only if the main product has not started downloading or streaming.
Why preload status matters
Automatic preloading can close the normal cancellation route. Once the main preorder download begins, the standard policy generally no longer allows cancellation, except where the product is faulty or another legal remedy applies. If you are undecided, disable automatic downloads for that preorder and check the cancellation request through PlayStation support before the preload starts. Downloading a small bonus or theme may not be the same as downloading the main product, but the policy’s main-product condition is the one that matters.
What Sony’s 2028 physical-media announcement means
On July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The announcement also says the transition has no impact on games that already released, or that will release before January 2028, in disc format.
This is a production milestone for new releases, not a statement that existing PS5 or PS4 discs will stop working in January 2028. A disc you already own still uses the console’s drive and the game’s installed files. Online features, patches, replacement discs, retailer stock, and regional availability can change for other reasons, but the announcement itself does not revoke existing disc licenses or erase installed games.
For a future purchase, verify whether the title is planned as a physical release before assuming a disc edition will exist. For a pre-2028 release, the announcement does not change the disc’s present authentication behavior: the console still checks the disc when you launch the installed game.
Troubleshooting preorder, patch, and disc problems
The preorder is paid for but has not started downloading
- Confirm you are signed into the PlayStation account that placed the order.
- Check Library and the game’s product page for the download option and the listed release date.
- Verify that rest-mode internet access and automatic downloads are enabled.
- Free enough SSD space and check for a paused or failed download.
- Restart the PS5 and reconnect to the network if the preload window has opened but no transfer begins.
The game downloaded but remains locked
That normally indicates the release-time entitlement lock, not a missing patch. Check the publisher’s stated release time and the console’s date, time, and internet connection. Do not delete a complete preload merely because it cannot start before launch.
An update will not install
- Check free storage; an update can require temporary space in addition to the displayed patch size.
- Resume the download from Downloads/Uploads and test the network connection.
- Restart the console, then check for the update again from the game’s options menu.
- Read the publisher’s release notes to see whether the update is mandatory for online play or fixes a known launch issue.
The disc game asks for a disc
Insert the original disc used to install or redeem the game and ensure it is clean and readable. For a PS4-disc-to-PS5 upgrade, use the same regional version as the account and leave the PS4 disc inserted while playing the PS5 version. A digital-only PS5 cannot perform this physical validation.
