Yes, you can play many PS4 games on an Android phone or tablet, but usually not by installing the PS4 game itself. The dependable method is PS Remote Play: your PS4 runs the game and streams its picture and sound to Android while the phone sends controller input back. Android emulation remains experimental, and Sony’s documented cloud-streaming announcement does not establish a general PS4 cloud-streaming app for Android.
What “playing PS4 games on Android” actually means
Three different technologies are often described with the same phrase. They have different hardware requirements, legal considerations, game catalogs and failure modes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Remote Play: your own PS4 renders the game. Android acts as a streamed display and input device.
- Emulation: Android attempts to reproduce enough of PS4 hardware and system behavior to execute game software locally.
- Cloud streaming: a provider’s remote server renders the game and sends the video to Android. No local PS4 is used for that session.
For most Android owners, Remote Play is the only mature, officially documented route. Sony describes Remote Play as streaming PlayStation games from a console to a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, Android TV device, PS5, PS4 or PlayStation Portal. The game is still running on the console, so Remote Play is not a PS4 emulator and it does not transfer the PS4 game into Android storage.

Remote Play: the PS4 does the rendering
During a Remote Play session, the PS4 runs the game, compresses the resulting video and audio, and sends that stream over your network. Android sends button presses, stick movement and other supported input in the opposite direction. Your phone therefore needs a suitable network connection, but it does not need PS4-level processing power or storage for the game.

Sony documents Android phones and tablets as supported Remote Play clients. You need a compatible PS4, a PlayStation Network account, current PS4 system software, Remote Play enabled on the console and a stable broadband connection. Sony warns that Remote Play consumes more data than most video-streaming services. Its Android TV guidance lists 5 Mbps broadband as a minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures are baseline guidance, not a guarantee: latency, upload quality at the PS4, Wi-Fi congestion, router distance and mobile-data limits can still make a game unpleasant to play.
Almost all PS4 titles work with Remote Play, but Sony excludes vendor-designated non-compatible games. A title can also be unsuitable when it requires PlayStation Camera, PlayStation VR or another special peripheral. Sony specifically identifies DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge as supported controller families; games that require other hardware may not be playable through the normal Android setup.
Emulation: Android attempts local PS4 execution
An emulator does not connect to your PS4. It tries to reproduce the console’s processor, graphics system, operating-system behavior and other hardware interfaces on the Android device. The phone must then decode and execute the game locally, which is substantially more demanding than displaying a Remote Play stream.
Current Android PS4 emulation projects describe themselves as experimental. The shadPS4 Android project warns that it is early in development and that users should not expect a flawless experience. Bachata S4 likewise presents modern-Android PS4 emulation as experimental, with results affected by the specific phone or tablet, Android version, thermal condition, emulator release and graphics driver. That means a game that starts on one device may fail, stutter or overheat on another.

RPCS4 is described as an emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS rather than as a mature Android solution. Do not treat a website offering an APK with “PS4” in its name as official Sony software, a complete emulator or a safe download. Compatibility lists, frame rates and installation requirements change as projects develop, so check the current documentation for the particular emulator and device instead of relying on a universal game list.
Cloud streaming: a server does the rendering
Cloud streaming removes the need for a PS4 in your home because a provider’s server runs the game. Android receives the resulting video and sends input back over the internet. This can be useful when you do not own a console, but it introduces provider account, subscription, catalog, regional-availability and latency questions.
Sony’s cited cloud-streaming announcement documents PlayStation Plus Premium streaming for compatible PS5 games on PlayStation Portal without connecting that device to a PS5 console. That announcement does not establish a general official PS4 cloud-streaming application for Android. Consequently, do not assume that a PlayStation subscription automatically gives an Android phone access to PS4 cloud streaming. Any third-party service must be checked separately for its licensed catalog, supported countries, Android compatibility, controller rules, network requirements and privacy practices.

- Check the prerequisites. Confirm that you have a compatible PS4, a PlayStation Network account, an Android phone or tablet supported by the current PS Remote Play app, current PS4 system software and broadband internet. Sony’s later PS4 Remote Play app versions ended support for Android 7 after September 2022, so an Android 7 device may not be accepted by the current app even if an older version once worked.
- Enable Remote Play on the PS4. On the console, open Settings, find the Remote Play connection settings and turn on the option that enables Remote Play. Leave the console available according to Sony’s current power and rest-mode requirements; Remote Play cannot start if the PS4 is unavailable or not configured for network wake-up.
- Install the official PS Remote Play app. Use the current official Android release from your device’s normal app store. Sign in with the same PlayStation Network account associated with the PS4. App labels and Android requirements can change, so follow the version-specific prompts shown on your device.
- Connect a controller. A DUALSHOCK 4 is explicitly supported. Pair it with Android using the controller’s Bluetooth pairing mode, then select it in Android Bluetooth settings. Some Android devices also accept other supported PlayStation controllers, but compatibility can vary by operating-system version and game. Touch controls are not a substitute for a full controller in every title.
- Start the console connection. Open PS Remote Play, select PS4 and allow the app to search for the configured console. The app will display the PS4 screen when the connection succeeds. If discovery fails, verify that the console is powered or available for Remote Play, both devices use the intended network path and the PSN account is correct.
- Test on Wi-Fi before using mobile data. Begin with the phone near the router and the PS4 connected through the most reliable connection available. Sony’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps broadband, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. Remote Play can use more data than ordinary video streaming, so check your mobile plan before switching away from Wi-Fi.
- Adjust expectations per game. A title that works in the catalog can still feel poor when latency is high. Fast competitive games and precise timing sections expose delay sooner than turn-based or slower-paced games. If the image breaks up, first reduce congestion and improve the network path rather than assuming the PS4 is underpowered.
Remote Play limitations that can stop a game
Remote Play is broad but not universal. Sony says vendor-designated non-compatible games may be excluded. Games that require PlayStation Camera, PlayStation VR or peripherals other than DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge can also be unavailable or incomplete. A phone cannot supply those console accessories simply by running the Remote Play app.
The console remains central throughout the session. If someone else uses the PS4 locally, changes the network, signs out the relevant account or powers down the console, Android cannot continue independently. Remote Play also does not eliminate the PS4’s storage, disc or license requirements: the game must be installed or otherwise available on the console under the account and licensing arrangement that normally allows it to run.
What to expect from Android PS4 emulation
Emulation is attractive because it promises local execution without owning a PS4, but its current status requires conservative expectations. Experimental projects can have incomplete system functions, graphical glitches, crashes, long shader-compilation pauses, severe battery drain and thermal throttling. Performance can change after an Android update, graphics-driver update or emulator release.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Device variation: the same emulator build can behave differently on two Android phones because graphics drivers, memory bandwidth and sustained cooling differ.
- Thermal behavior: a short demonstration may look successful before heat reduces clock speeds and causes stutter.
- Game-by-game support: starting a title is not proof that menus, saving, audio, cut-scenes and late-game areas work.
- File provenance: use lawfully obtained game and firmware dumps and follow the project’s documentation. Avoid downloads that bundle copyrighted games, unknown APKs or requests for unnecessary account credentials.
No source establishes a universal Android PS4 compatibility list, stable frame-rate target or console-level experience. Treat emulator claims as project-specific and time-sensitive, and keep a backup of legitimate files before testing experimental software.

Can cloud streaming replace a PS4 on Android?
Only when a specific provider explicitly supports Android, offers the PS4 game you want in your region and provides a license that covers your account. The cited Sony announcement concerns selected PS5 cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal, not a blanket Android PS4 service. Therefore, the safe answer is conditional rather than “yes” or “no.”
Before paying for any cloud service, verify four items in its current documentation: the exact Android operating-system and controller support, the catalog entry for each desired game, the countries in which the service operates and the network guidance for your location. Also check whether the service streams a console edition, a PC edition or a separate mobile version; those are different products with different saves and controls.
Which option should you choose?
You own a PS4 and want the largest usable library
Choose Remote Play. It uses the PS4’s existing game compatibility and is the only Android path in this comparison that Sony explicitly documents as a console-to-Android feature. Invest effort in the network and controller setup before searching for an emulator.

You do not own a PS4 and prefer a managed service
Investigate cloud services individually. Do not infer general Android PS4 access from Sony’s Portal announcement, and do not enter payment details until Android support, catalog, region and licensing are all clear.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The app cannot find the PS4: confirm Remote Play is enabled, the console has current system software, the app uses the correct PlayStation Network account and the console is available on the network.
- The picture is blurry or freezes: move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, reduce other traffic, use a more reliable connection for the PS4 and test again before changing games.
- Controls feel delayed: latency rather than graphics quality is usually the critical issue. Test near the router, avoid congested mobile networks and use a supported controller.
- The controller will not work: confirm that it is paired with Android rather than another device, reconnect it before launching the session and check whether the particular game requires an excluded peripheral.
- The Android device is unsupported: check its Android version against the current app listing. Sony’s later PS4 Remote Play app versions ended Android 7 support after September 2022.
- An emulator crashes: consult that project’s device and game notes, try a documented graphics-driver setting and monitor temperature. Do not assume that repeated crashes can be fixed by downloading an unofficial APK.
Legal and security precautions
Remote Play uses games and accounts you already have on your PS4, subject to the normal PlayStation license terms. Emulation is more complicated: the emulator program, firmware and game files can have separate legal rules in your jurisdiction. Use lawfully obtained copies and dumps, and never treat a random “PS4 emulator” download as official Sony software.
For all three methods, install apps from trusted sources, keep Android and the PS4 updated, use a strong PlayStation Network password and avoid services that demand credentials unrelated to the feature they provide. A free APK that promises every PS4 game is more likely to create a security or copyright problem than to deliver a working console replacement.
