To shut off in-game voice entirely, open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and set Enable Voice Chat to Off. If you want to keep squad communications while avoiding accidental broadcasts to nearby players, select Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk for proximity chat and leave its activation control unused.
What proximity voice chat is in ARC Raiders
Proximity voice chat is the channel that lets you communicate with Raiders outside your squad during a raid. Embark describes it as a way to talk to other Raiders and potentially persuade them to become allies. It is therefore part of the game’s social layer as well as a voice feature: you can negotiate, warn another group, coordinate a temporary truce or simply acknowledge another player without adding them to your party.

The game has two distinct audiences for voice communication. Your squad channel is intended for the people who entered the match with you. Proximity voice is aimed at nearby Raiders who are not members of that squad. The settings reference exposes separate controls for these channels, so changing a proximity option does not automatically change every party-chat option.

| Channel | Who can receive it | Typical purpose | Relevant controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Party voice chat | Members of your squad | Planning, callouts and coordination with teammates | Party voice mode and party volume in the Voice Chat settings |
| Proximity voice chat | Raiders outside your squad who are close enough for the game’s proximity system | Negotiation, warnings, social interaction or temporary cooperation | Proximity mode, proximity volume and the proximity activation control |
Embark’s documentation explains the purpose of the outside-squad channel but does not publish a fixed distance in meters for when a player can hear you. Treat “proximity” as a game-managed nearby-player system rather than assuming a particular radius.

Choose what you want to stop before changing a setting
There are three separate outcomes people usually mean by “turn off proximity chat.” Decide which one matches your problem, because each uses a different control.
- Stop all in-game voice immediately: disable Enable Voice Chat. This is the broad switch for sending and receiving in-game voice.
- Keep voice available but prevent an open microphone: change the proximity mode from Open Mic to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk. Your microphone will not be transmitted through that channel unless you deliberately activate it.
- Keep the system enabled but stop hearing proximity players: reduce Proximity Voice Chat Volume to zero. The settings reference lists this separate level control, but it is an audio workaround, not a documented replacement for the master voice switch.
| Configuration | Can you hear nearby Raiders? | Does your microphone transmit automatically? | Does squad voice remain possible? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enable Voice Chat: Off | No in-game voice | No | No in-game voice communication | Complete silence or privacy |
| Proximity: Open Mic | Yes, if voice is enabled and volume is audible | Yes, whenever the microphone detects speech | Controlled separately by party settings | Hands-free conversation with nearby players |
| Proximity: Push to Talk | Yes, if voice is enabled and volume is audible | Only while the assigned proximity key or button is held | Party settings remain separate | Preventing unintended broadcasts |
| Proximity: Toggle to Talk | Yes, if voice is enabled and volume is audible | Only while the proximity toggle is active | Party settings remain separate | Hands-free speaking after a deliberate toggle |
| Proximity Voice Chat Volume: 0 | Not audible to you | Does not by itself prevent transmission | Party audio is unaffected if its volume is separate | Muting what you hear while leaving voice enabled |
How to disable all ARC Raiders voice chat
Use the in-game master switch when you do not want to hear or transmit either squad or proximity voice.
- Pause the game or open its main menu and select Settings.
- Open the Audio tab.
- Scroll to the Voice Chat section.
- Set Enable Voice Chat to Off.
- Return to the raid or menu and test by checking that voice indicators no longer appear when you speak and that incoming in-game voice is silent.
This is the clearest documented way to disable both directions of in-game voice. It also means you cannot use the squad channel through the game until you turn the switch back on.
How to keep party chat but stop proximity transmission
If your goal is to talk with squadmates while preventing nearby strangers from hearing your microphone, leave the overall voice system enabled and change only the proximity mode.
- Open Settings and choose Audio.
- In Voice Chat, confirm that Enable Voice Chat remains On.
- Find Proximity Voice Chat Mode.
- Select Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk instead of Open Mic.
- Do not press or activate the proximity control while you are in a raid. Your microphone will not be sent through proximity unless you intentionally trigger that mode.
- Check the party-chat mode separately so your squad communication uses the input behavior you actually want.
Push to Talk requires you to hold its assigned control while speaking. Toggle to Talk changes the transmit state when you press the control, so check whether it is active before discussing anything private. If you want a fail-safe against any proximity transmission, use Enable Voice Chat: Off instead.
Microphone modes, button assignments and devices
Open Microphone
Open Mic continuously monitors the selected microphone while voice chat is enabled. Speech, background noise and conversations near your microphone can be transmitted without another button press. It is convenient for negotiation but easiest to trigger accidentally, especially with a sensitive laptop or controller headset microphone.

Push to Talk
Push to Talk transmits only while you hold the assigned proximity control. The official settings reference lists B as the default PC proximity push-to-talk key. Key bindings can be changed, and console defaults may differ, so verify the actual assignment on your platform rather than relying on the PC default.

Toggle to Talk
Toggle to Talk is also listed as a selectable proximity mode. It lets you press once to begin transmitting and press again to stop. Because the microphone remains live after the first press, look for the game’s voice indicator or deliberately toggle it off after each conversation.
Selecting input and output devices
The Voice Chat settings include a selectable microphone input device, a selectable voice-chat output device and a microphone test. Choose the headset microphone you intend to use rather than leaving the game pointed at a webcam, monitor microphone or disconnected controller. Choose headphones or the intended speakers as the voice output, then run the microphone test before entering a match.
A gaming headset with a microphone is a practical setup because ARC Raiders supports a dedicated input and a separate voice-output device. No particular headset model is required; the important checks are that the operating system detects it, the game lists it and the microphone test responds when you speak.
What is the proximity voice chat button?
On PC, the settings reference lists B as the default proximity Push-to-Talk key. This is not a universal key: rebinding changes it, and console layouts can use a different button. To identify your current control, open the game’s keybind or control settings and look for the proximity voice or proximity Push-to-Talk action. If you cannot find a transmission control, confirm that the mode is not Open Mic; Open Mic does not require a button press.
When troubleshooting, test the control in a safe menu or with a willing squadmate. Hold the assigned key for Push to Talk, or press the assigned key once and watch for a voice indicator with Toggle to Talk. Release or press again to stop transmitting. Avoid assuming that a general squad-chat button also controls proximity; the channels can have separate modes and bindings.

PS5: restore voice access or remove a console mute
PlayStation 5 can apply a system-level mute that overrides what you select in ARC Raiders. Embark says Game Base may mute in-game voice chat by default. If you cannot hear anyone or your microphone never reaches the game, check this setting before changing hardware.
- Press the PS button to open the control centre.
- Open Game Base.
- Enter Game Base Settings.
- Choose Voice Chat Settings.
- Turn Mute Game Voice Chat off.
- Set Share Your Voice to Allow.
- Return to ARC Raiders, confirm Settings > Audio > Voice Chat > Enable Voice Chat is on, and run the microphone test.
If you intended to disable proximity only, leave the PlayStation voice permissions available and use the in-game proximity mode controls instead. Turning off Game Base permissions is a console-wide restriction and can block more than the one channel you meant to change.
Xbox: check privacy and online-safety permissions
Xbox privacy rules can prevent communication even when ARC Raiders is configured correctly. Embark’s troubleshooting path uses the following exact menu sequence:
- Open Profile & System.
- Select Settings.
- Open Account, then Privacy & Online Safety.
- Choose Xbox Privacy.
- Select View Details and Customize.
- Open Communication & Multiplayer.
- Set You can communicate outside of the Xbox network with voice & text to Everybody.
- Restart or return to ARC Raiders, verify the in-game Voice Chat switch and test the selected microphone.
This permission controls communication outside the Xbox network. If it is restricted, proximity conversations may fail even though your microphone works in the console interface. To silence proximity deliberately, use the game’s settings rather than changing this privacy permission.
Troubleshooting: you can hear but cannot speak
- Check the master switch: confirm Enable Voice Chat is on. If it is off, no microphone mode can transmit.
- Check the mode: Open Mic should transmit when the selected microphone detects speech; Push to Talk and Toggle to Talk require their proximity control.
- Check the selected input: in the Voice Chat settings, choose the microphone that shows activity during the microphone test.
- Check the physical mute: inspect the headset boom, inline switch or controller mute button. A hardware mute is independent of the game’s mode.
- Check console permissions: follow the PS5 Game Base or Xbox privacy steps above if the system can block voice.
- Check the binding: a changed keybind, conflicting action or different console layout can make Push to Talk appear nonfunctional.
Troubleshooting: you cannot hear nearby Raiders
- Raise the right volume: increase Proximity Voice Chat Volume, not only master game volume. The proximity slider is separate in the settings reference.
- Confirm voice is enabled: Enable Voice Chat must be on to receive in-game voice.
- Check the output device: select the headphones or speakers connected to the device you are actually using.
- Check for a console mute: PS5 Game Base’s Mute Game Voice Chat setting and Xbox communication privacy can override in-game audio.
- Remember the channel’s scope: proximity voice is for Raiders outside your squad who are within the game’s proximity system. Silence does not necessarily indicate a fault; no nearby Raider may be transmitting, or the other player may have voice disabled.
Use volume zero only when you want a listening mute
Setting Proximity Voice Chat Volume to zero is useful when you want to keep the voice system and microphone modes available but do not want to hear the open-channel conversation. The setting reference identifies the separate volume control, but it does not describe zero volume as a guaranteed disable switch for transmission. Do not use it as your privacy control: choose Enable Voice Chat: Off, or use Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk and leave the proximity control inactive.
A practical setup for different play styles
You never want in-game voice
Set Enable Voice Chat to Off. This removes both incoming and outgoing in-game voice and is the least ambiguous configuration.

You want squad coordination but no accidental proximity broadcast
Keep voice enabled, set proximity to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk, and verify the proximity control before every raid. Configure party voice independently for the way your squad communicates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou want to negotiate with strangers occasionally
Use Push to Talk if you prefer a deliberate hold-to-speak action, or Toggle to Talk if you need both hands free after activating the channel. Check the voice indicator and deactivate the control immediately after the conversation.
You want to hear squadmates but not nearby players
Leave the overall system enabled, keep the party channel configured for your squad, and set proximity volume to zero. Because zero volume is an audio-level workaround rather than a documented transmission block, pair it with Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk if you also need to ensure your microphone cannot open toward nearby Raiders.
Why proximity voice matters to gameplay
ARC Raiders is a PvPvE game in which encounters can involve competing players as well as environmental threats. Proximity voice gives an encounter a communication option that squad-only voice cannot provide. A nearby Raider can offer a warning, propose cooperation or try to persuade you not to fight. Whether you use that option is entirely configurable: the same settings support open conversation, deliberate push-to-speak communication or complete voice silence.
Because the channel is intended for people outside your squad, treat anything said through it as coming from an untrusted player. Voice settings control who can hear and transmit; they do not turn a temporary alliance into a permanent party relationship or provide a safety guarantee. If you do not want that social interaction, disabling the channel has no effect on the rest of the raid’s core controls.
Quick Recap
Quick verification checklist
- Open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat.
- Decide whether the master switch should be on or off.
- For proximity, choose Open Mic, Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk deliberately.
- Confirm the proximity volume and output device.
- Confirm the microphone input and run the microphone test.
- On PC, verify the current proximity key; B is the listed default, not a guaranteed binding.
- On PS5, ensure Game Base has Mute Game Voice Chat off and Share Your Voice set to Allow when you want voice.
- On Xbox, set the outside-network voice-and-text permission to Everybody when communication is being blocked.
- Test once with a squadmate before relying on the setup in a live encounter.
