Prison and jail video visits usually involve checking the facility’s instructions, getting visitor approval if required, creating an account with its provider, booking a time, and joining on an approved device. There is no single nationwide process: the facility determines the format, provider, fees, schedule, equipment and conduct rules.
Start with the facility’s visitation page
Look up the specific prison or jail—not just the state or the video-call provider. Its official visitation page should identify the provider, explain whether visits happen at home or at a visitor-center station, and link to the right registration and scheduling steps. Some systems offer internet visits, in-person visits, or both; options can differ by institution. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s scheduling guide, for example, distinguishes internet video visits from face-to-face visits and cautions that institutions offer different options.

Confirm that video visits are available for the person you want to visit and check the current local rules before creating an account. Facility arrangements, provider names and procedures can change.

How to arrange and join a visit
- Check whether you need approval. Read the facility’s visitor-approval instructions and submit any required application. Approval may be a prerequisite to scheduling. California CDCR reviews visitor questionnaires and says processing times vary by institution; approved visitors are listed in its system. CDCR’s visiting guide explains the application process. Michigan’s standards say a ViaPath appointment made before MDOC approval will not be honored. Michigan’s visiting standards describe its approval requirement.
- Register with the provider specified by the facility. Use the official facility link and the correct account for that system. You may need to add or select the incarcerated person. Requirements differ: Indiana’s DOC-branded ViaPath portal, for instance, describes a particular workflow in which visitors register online, obtain facility approval, use matching account email addresses across its portal and GettingOut, and add the incarcerated person in GettingOut Visits. Follow that portal’s instructions rather than assuming the same process applies elsewhere. Indiana’s ViaPath portal sets out its steps.
- Choose an available slot and the approved participants. Sign in to the facility’s scheduling system, select the person you are visiting, and choose a date, location and time from the available options. Add only the visitors permitted by local rules. CDCR’s guide describes selecting an approved person and visitors, reviewing the visit details and policies, and confirming the reservation; it says a confirmation number is added and an email is sent. - Pay if the facility requires it. Check the amount, payment deadline and refund policy before confirming. Some visits are free; others require advance payment. Fees and visit limits are facility-specific, not a national rate.
- Prepare the supported device and app. Use the facility’s instructions to determine whether to join through a mobile app, desktop software or browser. Indiana’s portal directs mobile visitors to GTL VisMobile and desktop or laptop visitors to GTL VisBridge, with an Internet Visit Tester step for computers. That is an Indiana-specific setup, not a universal requirement. Check the facility’s guidance for device compatibility; a working camera and microphone and a stable connection are sensible preparations, but not every system has the same formal requirements. - Log in early and follow the local rules. Use the exact scheduled time and time zone shown in your confirmation, and allow enough time to sign in and resolve connection problems. Read rules about participant registration, children, conduct, devices in the room and missed visits. For example, Virginia DOC’s rules for home internet visits require logging into GTL 15 minutes early, preregistration of all participants and a limit of five people; they also prohibit joining while driving or using other electronics in the room. Those requirements apply to that Virginia visit process, not automatically to other facilities. Virginia DOC’s visitation rules explain its requirements.
Approval, booking windows and visit limits vary
Do not assume that creating an account means you are approved, or that approval automatically reserves a visit. Michigan’s 2025 visiting standards say visits are appointment-only and that only MDOC-approved people may visit; a ViaPath appointment made before approval will not be honored. The same standards set different monthly maximums by custody or placement level. Check Michigan’s current visiting standards for the facility and person involved.

Scheduling windows can also be narrow. Michigan’s standards describe video visits of up to 20 minutes, scheduled 48 hours to seven days in advance. These are Michigan-specific terms; check the facility’s own page for its current booking window, duration and visit quota. Michigan’s standards are available here.
Fees and length depend on the facility
There is no standard national price or visit length. These official examples illustrate why you should verify the current terms on the facility’s own portal:

Payment and missed-visit policies matter as much as the listed fee. Virginia DOC’s rules say fees are not refunded for late arrivals or missed home internet visits. That is a Virginia-specific policy, not a general refund rule. Check Virginia DOC’s rules for details.

Before you book: a quick checklist
- You have the correct facility page and provider link.
- You know whether visitor approval is required and whether it is complete.
- You can access the correct provider account and its registered email.
- You know the supported app or desktop tool for your device.
- Your device, camera, microphone and internet connection are ready for the platform’s instructions.
- You have the date, time and time zone, plus the permitted attendee list.
- You know the cost, payment deadline and missed-visit policy, if applicable.
- You have read local participant, dress, conduct and room/device rules.
If something goes wrong
If approval is pending, a slot is unavailable, payment fails or the app will not connect, start with the facility’s official visitation portal and its listed support contact. Check that you are using the correct provider account, device instructions and appointment details. Do not rely on another facility’s process to resolve a local issue. Privacy, monitoring and data-retention rules are not established as one nationwide standard in the cited facility instructions; check the relevant facility and provider policies if those details matter to you.
