Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallPainting terrain does not create a special Warhammer 40,000 rules category. A wall that is painted, unpainted, weathered or glossy has the same line-of-sight and cover effect unless the finished work physically changes its size or shape. Play is determined by the feature’s geometry, agreed footprint, height and declared terrain type or keyword.
Before deployment, agree where each feature begins, how tall it is for measurement and which terrain rules apply. Then use normal visibility or the relevant special instruction, rather than the color or finish, to decide whether models can be seen and whether a ranged attack receives Benefit of Cover.

What the core rules actually measure
Games Workshop’s 2023 Warhammer 40,000 Core Rules describe battlefields as containing terrain features that models move over or around and that can “partially or fully block line of sight between models.” The rule is about the physical feature on the table. It does not distinguish a resin ruin painted by hand from the same ruin left in its original material.

- Geometry: the walls, floors, solid sections, gaps and other physical surfaces that can block a view.
- Footprint: the ground-level boundary the players agree to use when determining whether a model is in, within or behind the feature.
- Classification: the terrain type, keyword or mission instruction that tells you whether to use normal visibility or a special visibility rule.
Color, shading, flock, dry-brushing and varnish are aesthetic unless they add enough material to change the physical silhouette. A thick basing rim, sculpted rubble or a heavy layer of texture can make a feature wider or taller. Measure the finished model consistently if that happens; do not let a decorative addition silently change the boundary during a game.
Does painting terrain change line of sight?
No. A painted wall blocks the same view as an unpainted wall occupying the same space. A dark interior does not count as a solid wall, and a bright exterior does not make a model easier to see under the rules. If the feature uses normal visibility, ask whether the models can actually see one another around or through the physical geometry.
When the finished piece is physically different
Painting can be accompanied by construction or basing changes. For example, adding a thick rubble base may extend the ground-level outline, while a scenic topper may raise the highest point. Those changes are physical, so record them before the first turn. The sensible approach is to use the completed piece that will remain on the table, not an earlier unpainted version, as the reference for height and footprint.

If the rubble is part of the model and the players agreed that it forms the base, it should be treated the same way for every unit. If it is loose scatter that can be moved independently, decide whether it is a separate feature before deployment.
Footprints: the agreement that prevents disputes
A footprint is the boundary used to determine where the terrain feature exists at ground level. It may follow the outside of the modeled base, an area-terrain outline supplied by a mission pack or a clearly marked template. The exact shape matters because a model can be just inside or just outside the feature, and that position can change a cover result.

Set the boundary before models are placed
- Put the completed terrain piece in its intended position.
- Trace or mark the ground-level outline, including any base that the players have agreed is part of the feature.
- Use a removable paper or acrylic template when the model has an irregular or open base. Keep the template aligned with the same edges every time the piece is moved.
- Tell both players the terrain classification and any special visibility instruction associated with it.
- Take a quick photograph or note the outline if the table will be reset between rounds.
This process is especially useful for pre-painted ruins with attractive but uneven scenic bases. A decorative overhang should not cause the footprint to drift from one game to the next.
Connected sections and separate features
Decide whether adjoining painted walls, towers and rubble are one feature or several. A continuous area-terrain outline produces one consistent ruling; separate outlines can produce different cover and visibility results for models standing between them. Tournament layouts commonly use defined area-terrain outlines and deliberate ruin placement so that players know which sections belong together.

Normal line of sight versus special terrain rules
Games Workshop’s terrain guidance emphasizes that the physical feature still matters when drawing line of sight into and out of terrain areas. That does not mean every terrain type is resolved by simply looking through its windows. Some types, including Ruins and Obscuring, provide special visibility instructions. Those instructions take priority over an informal judgment based on paint, lighting or the apparent openness of the model.
Using true visibility
When the terrain rule calls for normal visibility, check the actual view from the observing model to the target. Solid painted masonry, intact floors and other physical obstructions can block the line. Window openings, doorways and missing sections remain openings if the rule does not replace that physical check. A painted black interior is still an opening; a painted white insert is not automatically a wall.
Using a keyword or mission instruction
When the feature has a keyword or rule that changes visibility, apply that text exactly. Obscuring is the clearest example of why a player should identify the terrain type before the game: an apparent gap in the model does not necessarily permit a shot if the special rule says the feature blocks visibility in that situation. Conversely, do not apply an Obscuring-style effect to a piece that has not been classified that way.

Mission packs and tournament packets can define the terrain layout or provide additional instructions. Use the current packet for the event or game being played, and make the classification visible to both players rather than relying on the color scheme as a signal.
How pre-painted ruins provide cover
Cover is a rules outcome, not a paint effect. First determine whether the model and the attack satisfy the terrain feature’s cover conditions. If they do, Benefit of Cover adds 1 to the saving throw made for the ranged attack. The bonus does not apply to invulnerable saving throws.
Important Benefit of Cover limits
- A model with a Save characteristic of 3+ or better cannot have Benefit of Cover against an attack with AP 0.
- Multiple instances of Benefit of Cover do not stack. If two pieces or rules would grant it, the model still receives only one instance.
- The bonus is applied to the eligible saving throw, not to an invulnerable save.
For a painted ruin, the practical sequence is therefore: establish the agreed footprint, determine the feature’s terrain rule, check the model’s position and the attack’s visibility, then apply the cover benefit and its exceptions. The paint finish never enters that calculation.
Can you shoot through windows in a painted ruin?
Sometimes. The answer depends on the rule assigned to the ruin.
- Normal visibility: a model can be targeted if the observing model has the required physical view through a doorway, window or gap. Solid sections of the ruin can still block the line.
- A special Ruins or Obscuring instruction: follow that instruction even when a window or gap appears large enough to see through. The special rule may abstract the ruin’s visibility instead of using the literal opening.
- Unclear classification: stop before measuring attacks and agree which terrain type applies. Do not decide differently for different units in the same phase.
Painting the window frame a contrasting color can make the opening easier for humans to see, but it has no independent rules effect. Likewise, darkening the inside of a ruin does not turn an opening into a wall.

Height, elevated positions and Plunging Fire
Height is a gameplay measurement, not a visual impression. Two ruins may have similar footprints but create different firing lanes if one has a taller tower, a higher floor or a raised platform. Use the completed feature’s agreed height and the table’s measurement conventions consistently.
Games Workshop’s 2025 Chapter Approved Tournament Companion recommends varied terrain heights and specifically notes that height is important for rules such as Plunging Fire. A pre-painted piece with a high upper level can therefore influence more than whether a model is visible at ground level: it can affect which elevated attacks qualify under the mission’s rules.
Practical height procedure
- Identify the surface from which the attacking model is firing and the surface occupied by the target.
- Measure using the game’s normal tools and the feature’s agreed geometry, not the apparent height of a painted backdrop.
- If a decorative antenna, banner or smoke plume is not intended to be a playable surface, agree whether it counts before deployment.
- Use the same decision for every unit and every side of the feature.
When a piece has removable floors or interchangeable sections, mark which configuration is being used for the game. A pre-painted section that is swapped mid-game should not create a new, unannounced height ruling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why tournament layouts use abstraction
The 2025 Chapter Approved Tournament Companion says its layouts achieve substantial line-of-sight blockage and cover through the natural abstraction of line of sight within the rules for Ruins. In other words, the table does not need to reproduce a real building perfectly. Defined ruin placement, area outlines and a range of heights create predictable firing lanes while the rules handle the abstraction.
This approach explains why a sparse-looking painted ruin can still be appropriate for competitive play if its outline and classification match the packet. Conversely, a densely detailed building can produce poor gameplay if its footprint is unclear or if players cannot agree whether adjoining sections are one feature. Match the finished scenery to the current mission layout rather than judging balance from paint quality alone.

Comparing pre-painted terrain pieces for gameplay
When choosing between finished terrain pieces, evaluate the characteristics that affect rulings, not simply the quality of the color scheme.
| Characteristic | Questions to answer before the game | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint clarity | Is the ground-level boundary obvious, and is a base or template supplied? | A clear outline makes model placement and cover checks repeatable. |
| Height | Are the playable levels and highest relevant surfaces consistent? | Height changes firing lanes and can matter for Plunging Fire. |
| Terrain classification | Does the piece have an agreed Ruins, Obscuring, woods, barricade or area-terrain treatment? | The classification determines whether normal visibility or a special instruction applies. |
| Connected sections | Can walls, towers and rubble be identified as one feature or separate features? | Different outlines can produce different positions and cover outcomes. |
| Modification flexibility | Can the piece be safely rebased, repainted or reconfigured without changing the agreed geometry? | Future physical changes may require a new footprint or height agreement. |
Assembly and paint quality still matter for durability and readability, but they are secondary to a stable footprint, usable height and an unambiguous rules classification.
Common disputes and fixes
“The paint makes the wall look thicker.”
Look at the physical edge, not the color contrast. If paint or texture genuinely adds material, include that finished edge in the agreed geometry. If the apparent thickness is only shading, it has no rules effect.
Recommended Free Tools
“The piece has no base, so where does the terrain start?”
Place a removable outline at ground level and announce it before deployment. Keep the outline with the feature whenever it is moved.
“One player sees through the window and the other does not.”
Check whether the feature uses normal visibility. If it does, use a consistent line from the observing model to the target. If a special Ruins or Obscuring instruction applies, use that instruction instead of debating the painted interior.
“Both ruins grant cover, so the save should be +2.”
It should not. Multiple instances of Benefit of Cover do not stack. Resolve the model’s eligibility once and apply the single permitted +1, subject to the AP 0 and Save 3+ restrictions and the exclusion for invulnerable saves.
“The scenic tower is taller than the packet’s example.”
Measure the actual piece and compare it with the agreed layout. If the height changes important firing lanes or elevated-fire rules, substitute a compliant piece, mark a standardized playable height or agree on a tournament-legal configuration before starting.

Pre-game checklist for painted terrain
- Place every feature in its intended position.
- Mark each ground-level footprint with a base edge or removable template.
- Identify which walls, floors, rubble and towers are connected.
- Record the playable height and any removable configuration.
- State the terrain type or keyword for each feature.
- Confirm whether normal visibility or a special instruction governs windows and gaps.
- Review the mission or tournament packet for layout-specific instructions.
- During play, apply Benefit of Cover only after checking eligibility and its exceptions.
Following this checklist lets pre-painted scenery look distinctive without creating hidden rules advantages. The table’s agreed geometry and classification remain the common language for every shot, move and cover decision.
