Pokémon save files, Pokémon HOME, Nintendo Switch Online, and Nintendo Accounts do different jobs. Linking an account identifies your Switch user and carries account-managed services such as eShop purchases and membership status, but it does not automatically copy a Pokémon save. Pokémon HOME moves eligible Pokémon into and out of HOME Boxes; it is not a backup of an entire game’s save.
For a complete save, use Save Data Cloud only when the specific game supports it. Most major Pokémon Switch titles—including Let’s Go, Pikachu!/Eevee!, Sword/Shield, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Legends: Arceus, Scarlet/Violet, and Legends Z-A—are excluded, so their saves must be moved with Nintendo’s System Transfer process. Use the same Nintendo Account on every console and HOME installation, and verify which copy is authoritative before deleting, resetting, or downloading over data.

The four layers you must keep separate
Transfer problems usually happen because four different kinds of data are treated as if they were one thing.

A save is the local progress file for a particular game: story progress, settings, unlocked features, and the Pokémon stored in that game’s own boxes. It belongs to the Switch user who created it. A Nintendo Account link does not, by itself, copy this file to another console.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Pokémon HOME storage
HOME stores compatible Pokémon in HOME Boxes and can move eligible Pokémon between HOME and supported games. It does not clone a game’s save, restore your story progress, or reproduce every setting and unlock.
Nintendo Switch Online services
Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) is the subscription layer used for online play and, where a title permits it, Save Data Cloud. Having NSO does not make every Pokémon save cloud-compatible.
Nintendo Account identity
The account identifies the person using Nintendo services. Nintendo says that linking a Nintendo Account to a Switch user enables Internet features such as the Nintendo eShop and online play. The same linked account can carry account-managed information, including purchases and NSO status, to another console. It is an identity and service link, not a universal save-file transfer.

Choose the transfer method by asking what you need to move
| Method | What moves | NSO required? | Account or user requirement | Effect on source and destination |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Save Data Cloud | A compatible game’s save backup | Yes, plus Internet access | Destination user must be linked to the same Nintendo Account | Downloading can overwrite the destination’s local save; one cloud backup is allowed per software title for each Nintendo Account |
| System Transfer | Users, saves, and related system data through Nintendo’s transfer flow | Not as a Save Data Cloud entitlement; follow Nintendo’s current transfer requirements | Use the Nintendo Account and user specified by the transfer process | Source data may be moved or removed; check prompts and destination data before confirming |
| Pokémon HOME | Individual compatible Pokémon between supported games and HOME Boxes | No NSO membership is required for the Switch version of HOME | Launch HOME with the same Nintendo Account on each device | Does not move the game’s save, settings, story progress, or incompatible Pokémon |
If your objective is “continue the same adventure on another Switch,” start with the title’s save-transfer support. If your objective is “take selected Pokémon with me,” HOME may be enough. If your objective is “use the same HOME Boxes on a phone and Switch,” the critical requirement is the same Nintendo Account, not NSO.
Save Data Cloud: useful, but title-specific
Save Data Cloud works only for software that Nintendo marks as compatible. It requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, Internet access, and a user linked to the same Nintendo Account on the destination console. Each Nintendo Account can have one cloud backup per software title; it is not an unlimited history of earlier saves.
Pokémon titles Nintendo lists as unsupported
Nintendo’s support list dated July 30, 2026, says the following Pokémon Switch games do not support Save Data Cloud:
Rank #3
- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
- Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!
- Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
- Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield
- Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl
- Pokémon Legends: Arceus
- Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
- Pokémon Legends Z-A
For these games, NSO cannot create a restorable cloud copy of the game’s save. Do not assume that a general Switch cloud-backup menu means a particular Pokémon title is protected; check the exact software name in Nintendo’s current compatibility information.
When a Pokémon title does support the cloud
- On the source Switch, open the game’s software options and configure Save Data Cloud backup for the user who owns the save.
- Confirm that the backup has completed while the console is online and the NSO membership is active.
- On the destination Switch, link the same Nintendo Account to the appropriate user.
- Use the game’s Save Data Cloud download option and read the warning about replacing local data before accepting it.
A cloud download is a replacement operation, not a merge. If the destination has newer progress, downloading the older backup can overwrite it. Decide which copy is authoritative first, and preserve any progress you cannot recreate.
System Transfer is the route for unsupported Pokémon saves
Nintendo’s System Transfer is designed to move users and their saves between Switch-family consoles when ordinary cloud backup is unavailable. Nintendo’s transfer FAQ specifically says saves for software such as Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet can be carried over with System Transfer.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Prepare both consoles
- Identify the exact source user and the destination user that should receive the save.
- Sign in with the same Nintendo Account where the transfer instructions require it.
- Install the relevant game on the destination when Nintendo’s current flow asks for it.
- Keep the source console available until the destination save has been checked.
- Review destination saves and users: a transfer can replace or remove data, and the source may no longer retain the moved copy.
Run the transfer
- Open the Switch system settings and choose the user or data-transfer option shown by Nintendo’s current System Transfer workflow.
- Select the source and destination roles exactly as prompted. Do not start a second transfer from the wrong console.
- Choose the user whose Pokémon save is being moved and authenticate the Nintendo Account when requested.
- Read each confirmation screen, especially warnings about data that will leave the source or overwrite a destination user.
- Allow the consoles to complete the transfer without powering either one off.
- On the destination, launch the Pokémon game with the transferred user and verify story progress, party, boxes, settings, and downloadable content before erasing or resetting the source.
The labels and sequence can change with system software, so follow the current on-screen Nintendo instructions rather than an old screenshot. System Transfer is a save move, not a way to combine two separate playthroughs into one.
What Pokémon HOME can and cannot do
Move individual Pokémon, not a whole save
On Switch, open Pokémon HOME, choose Pokémon, select the game you want to access, then choose the Switch user whose save data HOME should read. You can arrange eligible Pokémon between that game’s boxes and HOME Boxes. The game save itself remains tied to the console user; HOME does not restore badges, story flags, settings, item inventories, or a complete in-game box structure.
Use the same HOME Boxes on Switch and mobile
- Start Pokémon HOME on Switch and sign in with the Nintendo Account that should own the HOME data.
- Start the mobile version and choose that same Nintendo Account during setup.
- Confirm that the HOME Boxes and account identity shown on mobile match the Switch version before depositing or moving Pokémon.
Pokémon warns that starting mobile HOME with a different account prevents you from later linking that installation to the intended Switch account. If HOME was never linked to a Nintendo Account on an old device, its guest data and progress cannot be recovered after the device is lost or the application is removed. Treat the account link as the recovery key, not as an optional sign-in you can fix later.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
HOME after moving to Nintendo Switch 2
After a move to Nintendo Switch 2, HOME can connect to games such as Scarlet and Violet only when that game’s save data is present on the same console where HOME is launched. Moving HOME access alone is not sufficient. Nintendo recommends using System Transfer and signing in with the same Nintendo Account on both systems, then launching HOME on the console that actually contains the game save.

What linking provides
- Internet features for the linked Switch user, including eShop access and online play.
- Recognition of account-managed purchases and service status when that account is linked on another console.
- The identity needed to use the same HOME account across compatible devices.
What linking does not provide
- It does not copy every Pokémon game’s local save to a new console.
- It does not turn an unsupported title into a Save Data Cloud title.
- It does not merge two users’ saves or choose which of two conflicting saves is newer.
- It does not make HOME a full-console backup.
When a new console appears to have no Pokémon progress after account sign-in, check whether the game save was transferred separately and whether you launched the game with the correct Switch user.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
| Task | NSO needed? | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Online play in games that offer it | Generally yes | The Nintendo Account must also be linked to the Switch user. |
| Save Data Cloud backup or download | Yes | Only compatible software can use it; many Pokémon titles are excluded. |
| Pokémon HOME on Switch | No | Pokémon explicitly states that an NSO membership is not required for the Switch version of HOME. |
| Pokémon HOME mobile access | No NSO membership | The mobile app still needs the correct Nintendo Account link to reach the intended HOME Boxes. |
Thus, buying NSO solely to transfer a Scarlet or Violet save through Save Data Cloud will not work; those saves require System Transfer. NSO can still be necessary for online play or for cloud-compatible non-Pokémon software on the same account.

Prevent the most common transfer failures
“HOME does not see my save”
- Confirm HOME is running on the console that physically contains the game save.
- In HOME, choose Pokémon, then select the correct game and Switch user.
- Check that you did not sign in with a different Nintendo Account on mobile or on the replacement console.
- For Switch 2, verify that the save was transferred before opening HOME.
“I linked my account, but my save is missing”
Account linking does not move local saves. Use Save Data Cloud only for a supported title; otherwise repeat the System Transfer process with the correct source user and destination console.
“The destination already has a save”
Stop before downloading or accepting a transfer. Cloud downloads and some transfer operations can overwrite destination data. Back up or preserve the newer progress by whatever method the title supports, then choose deliberately which copy should remain.
“My old phone or Switch was lost”
HOME guest data that was never linked to a Nintendo Account cannot be recovered after loss or removal. For future moves, link HOME before depositing valuable Pokémon and use the same account on every replacement device.
Quick Recap
A safe decision checklist
- Write down the exact Pokémon title, edition, and console containing the save.
- Check whether that title supports Save Data Cloud; do not infer support from NSO membership.
- If supported, make or download the cloud backup with the same Nintendo Account and verify the overwrite warning.
- If unsupported, use Nintendo’s System Transfer and verify the destination before resetting the source.
- Use HOME only for compatible Pokémon movement, selecting the correct game and user.
- Launch HOME on Switch and mobile with the same Nintendo Account.
- After a move to Switch 2, open HOME on the console where the game’s save is present.
