1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn myth-themed roguelikes, permadeath usually ends only the current attempt, not the entire game. You lose the run’s temporary build, room or wave progress, and run-only rewards, then return to a hub with selected currencies, unlocks, abilities, stats, heroes, and story progress still intact. That soft-reset loop makes failure useful: every death teaches you the game’s patterns and often makes the next attempt stronger.
Hades is the clearest example. Zagreus dies while escaping the Greek Underworld, returns to the House of Hades, keeps permanent upgrades and relationships, and starts a newly remixed run. Achilles: Survivor applies a similar principle to wave-based survival: a failed attempt still awards Favors, unlocks mythic heroes, and improves permanent statistics.

What permadeath means in a mythological roguelike
Traditional roguelikes are generally turn-based, strategic games in which a character’s death can erase a run completely. Modern action titles such as Hades are more accurately described as roguelites because they combine randomized attempts and run-level death with permanent progression. The distinction matters: “permadeath” describes the fate of the current run, while metaprogression determines what survives for the next one.

- Start an attempt. You choose a hero, weapon, starting option, or route and enter a procedurally remixed area or a changing sequence of enemy waves.
- Build temporary power. During the attempt, you collect Boons, powers, equipment, structures, healing, allies, and other rewards that shape that particular build.
- Take risks for rewards. Optional rooms, challenges, elite enemies, shrines, and special currencies can make the run stronger, but they also increase the chance of dying before reaching the next checkpoint.
- Die or finish the run. Death ends the attempt. The rooms, wave position, temporary powers, and most run-only resources are cleared rather than carried into a fresh run.
- Spend permanent rewards. Back at the hub, you use retained currencies or unlocks to improve future attempts, open new characters or weapons, advance story events, or change the difficulty.
- Enter a new randomized attempt. The next layout, enemy combination, reward choices, or wave pattern differs, so knowledge and permanent upgrades combine with a new tactical problem.
Strict death versus run-level death
A strict roguelike may delete the character and every advantage earned during the run. A progression-focused roguelite instead deletes the attempt while preserving a designed layer of advancement. Calling both systems “permadeath” without specifying the reset scope causes confusion. In Hades, for example, Zagreus can die repeatedly without deleting the save, his relationships, or his Mirror of Night upgrades. The danger is real because the current build disappears, but the overall campaign is not reset to zero.

What disappears and what carries over
The cleanest way to understand progression is to separate run state from account, campaign, or hub state. Exact rules differ by game, but mythological roguelikes commonly use the following split.
| Run-level state | What usually happens at death | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Room, floor, or wave position | Reset to the beginning of a new attempt | You must solve the route again instead of continuing from the last fight. |
| Temporary powers | Lost | The next build starts with different combinations and weaknesses. |
| Run-only currency and chamber rewards | Usually lost or converted into a separate permanent reward | Short-term spending decisions remain meaningful. |
| Health, cooldowns, and temporary equipment state | Reset | Each attempt has its own risk curve. |
| Permanent upgrades and unlocked options | Retained | Repeated attempts gradually expand your power and choices. |
| Story flags, conversations, and relationships | Retained when the game supports narrative metaprogression | Death can advance the plot instead of blocking it. |
Games signal the distinction through different names. A Boon or temporary power may alter one run, while a Mirror upgrade, unlocked hero, permanent statistic, or challenge option changes later runs. When a reward screen is unclear, ask whether the item changes the current build immediately or unlocks a rule that remains after returning to the hub.
How Hades turns death into progression
The mythological premise
Supergiant describes Hades as a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which you defy the god of the dead and fight out of the Underworld of Greek myth. You play Zagreus, the immortal Prince of the Underworld. Each escape attempt rearranges the challenges and lets you combine Olympian powers in a new way.
The game’s structure was designed around the expectation that you will become stronger during combat, almost inevitably die, and carry what you learned into the next randomized run. That expectation is why death feels like part of the intended rhythm rather than a reload screen that interrupts the campaign.

What is temporary in a run
- Boons: Olympian gifts modify attacks, special moves, casts, dashes, or other abilities for the current attempt. Their combinations define a build, but they do not remain as permanent inventory after death.
- Chamber rewards and run currencies: Rewards selected while moving through rooms determine how powerful Zagreus is before the next encounter. Their value is tied to that run unless the game explicitly converts a reward into a lasting resource.
- Current route and room progress: Reaching a later region does not create a permanent checkpoint for the next escape attempt. A new run begins with a newly arranged sequence of challenges.
What remains after Zagreus dies
- Mirror of Night upgrades: The Mirror provides lasting improvements that make future attempts more resilient or more flexible.
- Permanent unlocks: Weapons, weapon aspects, systems, and other hub options expand the set of strategies available in later runs.
- Story and relationships: Zagreus returns to the House of Hades, where characters remember previous events and conversations continue.
- Difficulty and accessibility choices: God Mode, Hell Mode, and the Pact of Punishment let you tune the challenge without deleting your campaign.
PlayStation describes Hades as having 30 fully voiced characters and thousands of story events. Those events are a central part of the progression model: dying brings Zagreus back to people who react to what happened, so a failed escape can produce new dialogue, relationship progress, or context even when the combat build is gone.
Difficulty that adapts to the player
God Mode increases Zagreus’s resilience after deaths, making the loop more forgiving without removing the randomized combat. Hell Mode raises the challenge for players who want a harsher starting condition. After the campaign systems open up, the Pact of Punishment adds selectable modifiers that increase difficulty and provide a structured way to replay completed content. This range is why “permadeath” in Hades should not be read as an all-or-nothing test of reflexes: the player can choose a gentler learning curve or deliberately add constraints.

What death resets
A run ends when the hero is defeated. The current wave position, temporary powers, active structures, and other run-specific advantages do not carry into the next attempt. The reset creates a fresh problem: you must rebuild a useful attack pattern and decide when to spend limited resources rather than relying on a permanent stockpile from the previous map.
What defeat awards permanently
Challenges award Favors, unlock heroes, and improve statistics. Nintendo summarizes the design as progression that respects your time: completing challenges and earning Favors makes you stronger with every attempt, even in defeat. The important difference from a purely run-based survivor game is the expanding roster and permanent statistical layer.
The listed mythic heroes include Achilles, Paris, Pythia, and Brontes. Their distinct powers and playstyles change how you approach wave density, defensive positioning, summoned support, and the timing of structures. Unlocking another hero therefore adds a new strategic starting point rather than merely increasing one character’s numbers.
The official Nintendo Switch listing gives Achilles: Survivor a release date of October 29, 2025. That date applies to the Switch listing; other platforms or regional editions may have different availability.

Hades and Achilles: Survivor compared
| Axis | Hades | Achilles: Survivor |
|---|---|---|
| Mythic protagonist | Zagreus, immortal Prince of the Underworld | A roster including Achilles, Paris, Pythia, and Brontes |
| Run format | Combat rooms and regions in a dungeon-crawl escape attempt | Top-down bullet-hell survival against enemy waves |
| Temporary build | Olympian Boons, chamber rewards, weapon choices, and current run resources | Powers, traps, shrines, summoned allies, structures, and wave resources |
| Permanent progression | Mirror of Night improvements, unlocks, weapons or aspects, story state, and difficulty systems | Favors, permanent statistic improvements, and newly unlocked heroes |
| Variation between attempts | Procedurally remixed rooms, reward choices, and enemy encounters | Changing wave pressure, arena decisions, powers, and building opportunities |
| Narrative persistence | Extensive: returning characters remember Zagreus and story events continue | The cited description emphasizes mechanical progression and the hero roster; a comparable volume of voiced story events is not stated |
| Difficulty controls | God Mode, Hell Mode, and Pact of Punishment | Not stated in the cited listing as an equivalent named modifier system |
Both games make defeat productive, but they reward different kinds of mastery. Hades asks you to read enemy patterns, route through rooms, and assemble compatible Boons while the story reacts to repeated deaths. Achilles: Survivor emphasizes positioning through escalating waves, selecting powers under pressure, and learning the strengths of a growing cast.

Check the reset scope
Look for an explicit explanation of what is lost when the hero dies. If the game names only a score or run timer, progression may be almost entirely temporary. If it lists permanent currencies, hub upgrades, unlocked heroes, or campaign flags, it uses a softer reset.
Identify the permanent resource
Permanent currencies are usually spent between attempts. Determine where they are earned, whether they can be lost, and what they buy. A currency awarded only for optional challenges may encourage risk, while a currency granted on every defeat makes the game’s baseline difficulty more forgiving.

Separate power from options
A permanent upgrade can raise damage or survivability, but an unlock can instead increase variety without making the character strictly stronger. New weapons, aspects, heroes, or challenge modifiers broaden decision-making; statistical upgrades shorten the time needed to reach later encounters. Good systems use both so that failure grants progress without eliminating the need to learn.

Look for narrative persistence
Some games preserve only mechanics. Others make death part of the fiction by returning the hero to a hub where characters comment on the attempt. Hades demonstrates the latter: the repeated escape effort and the return to the House of Hades are both combat structure and story device.
Practical strategy for surviving more runs
Before entering
- Spend permanent currency before starting another attempt if the hub offers a clear upgrade path.
- Choose a weapon or hero whose basic attack you understand; unfamiliar options are easier to evaluate when the run’s early rooms or waves are not yet dangerous.
- Set an appropriate difficulty. In Hades, God Mode can reduce the punishment while you learn, whereas Pact of Punishment is better reserved for deliberate challenge after the core systems are familiar.
During the attempt
- Prioritize survivability when you are still learning enemy tells. A slightly weaker build that keeps health is more useful than a high-damage combination that ends at the first elite encounter.
- Read reward descriptions for compatibility. A power that improves a move you rarely use may be less valuable than a modest bonus that strengthens your main attack.
- Spend temporary resources with the next encounter in mind. Saving every option can leave you underpowered, but using a rare reward immediately may prevent a later power spike.
- Treat a failed run as information: note which enemy, wave, room type, or resource decision caused the collapse, then alter one variable on the next attempt.
After death
- Return to the hub and claim or spend every permanent reward available.
- Check for new conversations, challenges, heroes, weapons, or difficulty options before launching again.
- Change one strategic assumption at a time so you can tell whether the improvement came from a new upgrade, a different route, or better execution.
Common misunderstandings
“Permadeath means my save file is deleted.”
Not in progression-focused games such as Hades and Achilles: Survivor. The failed run is deleted, while specified permanent systems remain. Always check the game’s own list of retained rewards rather than assuming every item survives.
“If I keep upgrades, the game is no longer a roguelike.”
Genre labels overlap. Traditional roguelikes tend to be turn-based and strategic; modern action roguelites preserve randomized runs and death resets while adding metaprogression. The presence of permanent upgrades does not remove the run-based structure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“A stronger next run should repeat the previous build.”
Randomized rewards are meant to force adaptation. In Hades, Boons can produce a different attack plan each attempt. In Achilles: Survivor, powers, structures, and hero abilities alter how you handle waves. Permanent progression gives you a better foundation, not a guarantee that one build will appear again.
“Narrative progress and combat progress are the same.”
They can be separate layers. A run may lose its Boons while still advancing conversations or relationships. Conversely, a game may preserve permanent statistics and heroes without offering a comparable story system. Evaluate mechanical and narrative persistence independently.
Why mythological heroes fit the loop
Myths already contain cycles of descent, trial, death, return, and transformation. Roguelike design turns that pattern into a playable structure. Zagreus repeatedly descends through the Underworld and returns to its House; each attempt changes his capabilities and reveals more about the people around him. A hero-roster game such as Achilles: Survivor uses a different mythic appeal: legendary figures become distinct playstyles that the player gradually assembles.
The result is a form of progression that respects failure without making failure meaningless. The run remains tense because temporary power can vanish at any moment, while the campaign remains approachable because knowledge, unlocks, and selected improvements accumulate. When comparing games in this category, the key question is not simply “Is there permadeath?” It is “Which parts of the hero’s journey die with the run, and which parts become part of the legend?”
