Your net payout is what remains after the charges tied to taking and receiving a client payment. The amount depends on more than the advertised processing percentage: transaction fees, card origin, currency conversion and faster-payout charges can all change what lands in your account.
How to calculate your net payout
Start with the gross amount the client pays, then subtract each fee that applies to that particular payment and payout route:

Net payout = gross payment − percentage processing fee − fixed transaction fee − applicable international or currency-conversion charges − optional payout charge.
Not every payment incurs every charge. Check the provider’s schedule for your account country, payment product, payment method, card origin, received currency and payout speed. A headline rate alone may not be enough to calculate the deposit.

Which fees can reduce the amount you receive?
Percentage and fixed transaction fees
Some providers charge a percentage of the transaction, a fixed amount per transaction, or both. For example, Square UK’s schedule lists 1.4% + 25p for online transactions with UK-issued cards and 2.5% + 25p for non-UK-issued cards. Those are UK schedule examples, updated February 2, 2026—not universal rates. See Square UK’s fee schedule.
PayPal’s US business schedule also lists rates for specific online services and separate fixed fees by currency. Its US rates should not be applied automatically to an account in another country or to a different PayPal service. See PayPal US business fees.

International card charges and currency conversion
A card issued outside your account’s home country may trigger an international transaction charge; that is distinct from converting the payment into another currency. Square UK lists a 1.5% international transaction fee for cards issued outside the UK. Whether conversion is also needed depends on the currencies involved.

Check how the charge appears in your account before comparing a quoted exchange rate with another provider’s fee display. Read Stripe’s explanation of currency-conversion fees.
Fees for faster access to funds
Expedited payouts can cost extra even after the card transaction has been processed. Stripe lists Instant Payouts at 1.5% of payout volume, with a 50-cent minimum; it describes payouts on the standard schedule as free. These are the terms on Stripe’s pricing page accessed October 4, 2026, and eligibility and account terms may affect availability. Check Stripe pricing.
Square UK lists a 1.5% instant transfer fee calculated on the balance after card transaction fees; its fee schedule was updated February 2, 2026. The calculation base matters: the fee is not simply 1.5% of the original client payment.

Why the same payment can have different fees
Provider schedules are not directly comparable unless the transaction scenario is held constant. Geography and payment type can change the rate even within one provider. Square UK separates UK and non-UK cards for online payments and also lists different rates for other products. Square Ireland publishes a separate schedule, including 1.4% + 25c for EEA/EU online card transactions and 2.9% + 25c for UK/non-EEA online card transactions; Square says VAT also applies. That schedule was updated February 3, 2026. See Square Ireland’s fee schedule.
For a meaningful comparison, use the same:
- Account country and provider service or payment product
- Gross amount and payment method
- Card origin (domestic or international)
- Currency charged to the client and currency you receive
- Conversion requirement and payout speed
- Eligibility assumptions for the account and service
A lower processing rate does not necessarily produce a higher payout if another fee applies. The official examples above cover different countries and products, so they do not establish a universally cheapest provider.

How to estimate a particular client payment
- Identify the transaction. Note your account country, provider product, payment method, gross amount and the card’s issuing country.
- Find the matching processing rate. Use the provider’s current schedule for that exact product and card category; include any fixed transaction amount as well as the percentage.
- Check for cross-border and conversion charges. Determine whether the card is treated as international and whether the client’s payment must be converted into your settlement currency. Do not treat those as the same fee.
- Choose the payout route. Apply a faster-payout charge only if you select an expedited option and it is available to your account. Otherwise use the standard schedule’s stated cost.
- Subtract the applicable amounts. Deduct the percentage fee, fixed fee and any applicable international, conversion or payout charge from the gross payment. Confirm the provider’s calculation base and rounding in its current terms.
What to check before quoting a net amount
Fee schedules change, and a specific rate may depend on service eligibility, card category, country and currency. The PayPal example here is for US business services; the Square examples are country-specific UK and Ireland schedules; Stripe’s payout and conversion terms are its own. For a precise estimate, verify the current schedule for your account and payment rather than treating an example rate as a standard freelancer fee.
