Signing an online petition can involve more than entering a name and email address. Depending on the platform and campaign, you may also provide a location, street address, phone number, or comment—and the platform may record technical data such as your IP address and cookie activity. What becomes public, what goes to a petition target, and what the service uses for its own communications are separate questions.
What information can a petition platform collect?
There is no single data policy for every petition service, and even one service may ask for different details on different campaigns. Check which fields are required, which are optional, and what the visibility notice says beside the sign action.

- Identity and contact details: A name and email address are common. A campaign may also request a postal code, city, street address, or phone number.
- Participation details: A platform may record which petition you signed, your comment or message, and related campaign activity.
- Technical and account data: Policies may cover IP addresses, cookies, browsing or engagement activity, language preferences, and account identifiers.
- Additional information: Depending on the service, this can include survey responses, optional demographic information, or preferences inferred from petition activity.
Location can help a campaign show geographic support or establish that a signer is relevant to a particular constituency. It does not follow that every campaign needs a full street address. Change.org’s help page says signers can use a city or town and postcode instead of a full street address; Care2 says ThePetitionSite often requires a street address. Check the specific form rather than assuming either practice applies everywhere. Change.org signing help; Care2 privacy policy.
Who can see your signature?
A signature can have different audiences. The name or comment shown on a public petition page is not necessarily the same information sent privately to a decision-maker, and neither is necessarily the same information available to the petition starter.

Care2 says a signer’s name, city, state, country, or comment may be public or included in material sent to targets or the press. It says a street address is not displayed publicly but may be transmitted to public officials or other targets. Those distinctions are specific to Care2’s stated practices; do not assume another service handles the same fields in the same way. What happens after you sign?
1. The service processes your participation
The platform receives the form information needed to register the signature and run the petition. Depending on its policy, it may also process account, device, cookie, or activity data for security, analytics, service operation, and improvement.
2. Your details may be shown or delivered
Public display and delivery are distinct. A field that does not appear on the petition page could still be sent to a target, and petition starters may have access to signature-list information. Read the notice at the sign action to see what the campaign says will be displayed or shared.

3. The platform may contact or categorize you
Change.org describes service operation and improvement, while Avaaz describes campaign communications, audience grouping and targeting, analytics, and delivery of petition information to targets. These are platform-specific stated purposes, not a universal list of what all petition services do. Review each service’s policy and email preferences for the details that apply.
Can you sign anonymously?
Some services offer controls, but “anonymous” can mean different things: hiding your name from public visitors does not necessarily mean the platform will not know who signed, or that no information will be sent to a campaign target.

- Inspect the form. Identify required fields separately from optional comments, messages, or extra contact details.
- Read the visibility notice beside the sign action. Check whether your name or comment will appear publicly and whether signature details will be delivered to the target or available to the starter.
- Use available privacy controls. If the service offers a pseudonym, anonymity request, or option to hide a name or comment, select it if appropriate and verify what it changes.
- Leave out optional sensitive details. Do not add a street address, phone number, or sensitive personal comment unless you understand why the campaign requests it and who may receive it.
- Consult the current policy and regional notice. Use these for questions about access, deletion, retention, and email preferences; those processes are service- and jurisdiction-specific.
These policies describe practices for the named services, not every petition website. The cited examples do not establish a complete cross-platform inventory or a uniform account of retention and data-rights procedures. Policies can change, so use the live policy and regional notice for the service you are considering.
