How often should you charge your phone?
There is no universal daily schedule. Plug in when you need more battery for the hours ahead. Small top-ups are fine: the reviewed Apple and Google guidance does not require a full discharge before charging.

Nor is there an established number of charges per day that applies to every phone or user. Your routine should reflect how much runtime you need, when charging is convenient, and which battery features your device supports.
Is it okay to charge your phone overnight?
For iPhone, Apple says overnight charging is safe: the phone stops charging when full, and Optimized Battery Charging is enabled by default to reduce how long the battery stays fully charged. Apple’s support page, published April 8, 2025, says, “You can charge your iPhone every night even if the battery isn’t fully depleted.” Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance.

Pixel’s Adaptive Charging can delay the final part of charging until close to your expected unplug time. Google says it may take about 14 days to learn your charging habits. Should you let the battery run down before charging?
No. Do not deliberately drain your phone to zero as a battery-calibration ritual. Google says Pixel owners do not need to teach the phone its battery capacity by going from full to zero or zero to full. Partial discharges contribute to a cumulative charge cycle; they are not a reason to wait until the battery is empty before plugging in.

Would an 80% charge limit suit your routine?
If you usually end the day with charge left and value battery longevity more than maximum daily runtime, consider enabling a charge limit if your phone offers one. Certain Pixel models have an 80% limit; Google frames it for people who do not need a full charge each day. Turn it off when you need the extra runtime. How to reduce heat while charging
Heat can affect battery lifespan, but the cited temperature guidance is specific to each manufacturer and should not be treated as one universal cutoff.
- iPhone: Apple warns that using or charging an iPhone above 35°C (95°F) ambient temperature can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance.
- Pixel: Google advises charging in a cool place, giving about 25°C (78°F) as a guide, and limiting exposure to high temperatures. Google Pixel Help: maximize battery life.
Keep the phone out of hot surroundings while charging and follow the temperature advice for your specific model.

What charge cycles say about battery aging
Battery capacity naturally declines over time. Google defines a charge cycle as the cumulative equivalent of using and recharging a full battery; several partial discharges can add up to one cycle. Its published Pixel design targets are model-specific:

These are Google’s approximate design targets, not guarantees for every phone, owner, or other brand. Google says Pixel owners should consider replacement when capacity falls below 80% or the model reaches its stated cycle count. Choosing a charging routine
- You need maximum runtime: Charge to the level that gets you through the day; use a charge limit only when you can spare the capacity.
- You charge while asleep: Use the manufacturer’s charging optimization feature if available, and follow device-specific guidance.
- You finish most days with charge left: An available 80% limit may better fit your needs than routinely charging to full.
- Your phone or charger gets hot: Move it to a cooler charging environment and check the manufacturer’s temperature advice.
Replacing a charger safely
If you need a replacement adapter, verify that it is compatible with your exact phone. For Pixel, Google specifies a compatible USB-C cable and adapter and identifies USB-C Power Delivery (PD) or Programmable Power Supply (PPS) as suitable charger types.
