How often should you rebalance a portfolio when markets are volatile?

For most investors, check your portfolio on a set schedule—often every six or 12 months—and rebalance only when an asset class has moved beyond a pre-set drift band. Annual rebalancing is a reasonable default when you can follow it consistently. A quarterly check can work when you require a threshold, such as five percentage points, before trading. Volatility by itself is not a reason to make repeated discretionary trades.

What rebalancing is—and the decision it is meant to enforce

Rebalancing restores your portfolio to its written target mix of asset classes. Suppose your plan is 60% stocks and 40% bonds. If stocks rise to 68%, your portfolio now carries more equity risk than intended; if stocks fall to 50%, it is more conservative than planned. Rebalancing means directing money toward the underweight asset, and sometimes selling part of an overweight asset, until the mix is back within your chosen limits.

The purpose is risk control, not a forecast of the next market move. Vanguard describes rebalancing as a way to stay aligned with long-term goals rather than to time markets. A target allocation should reflect your goal, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses. If those facts have changed, changing the target may be appropriate; simply restoring the old percentages would not solve a new planning problem.

How often to check and trade

Annual rebalancing: a practical default

Vanguard says, “For many investors, implementing an annual rebalance is optimal.” The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says investors commonly use six- or 12-month intervals. An annual review limits monitoring, reduces the temptation to react to headlines and usually keeps transaction activity modest. Choose a month that is easy to remember—such as the month you review your financial plan—and use the same process each year.

Quarterly reviews with a trading threshold

A quarterly check can be useful when markets move quickly, but checking does not mean trading. At each review, calculate the current percentage for every asset class. Trade only if a percentage has crossed your pre-set band. This combination gives you a regular chance to spot drift without turning every short-term fluctuation into a transaction.

Six-month schedules

A six-month interval is another common approach cited by the SEC. It may suit investors whose portfolios are large enough that moderate drift has a meaningful effect, or who want more frequent oversight than an annual review. The same rule applies: the calendar sets when you measure; the drift band determines whether you act.

Why monthly or weekly rebalancing is usually unnecessary

Frequent calendar trading can create taxes, spreads and commissions while giving you no reliable information about the next return. The SEC notes that rebalancing tends to work best when done relatively infrequently. A volatile month may move an allocation outside its band, but repeated attempts to follow every move can turn a long-term plan into short-term speculation.

Set the drift trigger before volatility arrives

Write the trigger into your investment policy statement before you need it. Vanguard and Fidelity use a five-percentage-point allocation drift as an illustration: a 60% stock target would be reviewed for action at 65% or 55%. This is a planning example, not a universal rule. A smaller band produces tighter risk control but can lead to more trades; a larger band reduces costs and taxes but allows greater variation from the target.

Define whether your band is an absolute percentage-point limit or a relative percentage limit. With an absolute five-point band, a 40% bond target triggers at 35% or 45%. A relative 5% band would be much narrower, triggering at 38% or 42%. State the method explicitly so that you apply it consistently.

Apply the rule to each asset class you actually manage, not just to the total stock-versus-bond split. If your plan separates domestic stocks, international stocks and bonds, one sleeve can breach its band even when the broad totals look acceptable.

Should you rebalance more often during a market crash?

No automatic increase in frequency is supported for every investor. A crash can make your stock allocation fall below its lower band, creating a rules-based opportunity to buy the underweight asset. But a crash is not a license to trade repeatedly, abandon your target or attempt to identify the exact bottom.

Investor.gov warns that volatility can make major investment changes feel urgent. Selling everything after a decline can lock in losses and leave you out of a subsequent recovery. The disciplined alternative is to follow the allocation and drift rule you selected in calm conditions. If the portfolio is outside the band, rebalance in a measured way; if it is inside the band, continue monitoring on schedule.

A crash-day checklist

  • Confirm that the decline has not changed your goal, time horizon or ability to take risk.
  • Measure each asset class against its written target rather than reacting to a headline or a single holding.
  • Check whether the drift band has actually been breached.
  • Use available cash flows first, and avoid an all-at-once decision when a staged transaction is more practical for your plan.
  • Do not replace a diversified allocation with a prediction about when markets will recover.

Three ways to implement a rebalancing rule

Method How it works Main advantage Main trade-off Best fit
Calendar-only Review and trade on a fixed six-, 12-month or annual date. Simple to remember and administer. Fast market moves can leave the portfolio substantially off target between dates. Investors who value a straightforward routine and have low monitoring needs.
Threshold-only Trade whenever an asset class crosses a stated drift band. Controls allocation drift directly. Requires monitoring and can create more taxable events or transactions. Investors able to track percentages and manage costs.
Calendar plus threshold Check on a fixed schedule and trade only after a band is breached. Balances oversight with cost and tax control. Needs both a calendar and a clearly defined band. A practical compromise for many self-directed portfolios.

Whichever method you choose, document the target percentages, the band, the review dates and the order in which you will use cash flows. A written rule prevents a different decision every time markets are unsettled.

Use cash flows before selling when possible

New money can correct drift without realizing a gain. Direct new contributions to the underweight asset class instead of buying every asset in its original proportion. In a retirement account, direct payroll contributions or transfers this way. In a taxable account, reinvest dividends and interest in underweight assets where your plan and account allow it.

Withdrawals can also help: take distributions from an overweight asset rather than selling an underweight one. These steps may not fully restore the target, but they can reduce the amount you need to sell and therefore reduce taxes and trading costs.

Tax and cost checks before a taxable-account trade

Rebalancing in a taxable brokerage account can create a capital gain. Before placing an order, estimate the cost basis, holding period and likely tax treatment of the shares you would sell. Consider bid-ask spreads, commissions where applicable and any account-specific fees. A tax-advantaged account generally offers more flexibility because trades there do not create the same immediate capital-gains reporting, although withdrawals and plan rules still matter.

Wash-sale rules can become relevant when you sell an investment at a loss and buy the same or a substantially identical investment within the applicable window. The detailed treatment depends on the security, account type and your circumstances. If the transaction is significant, ask a qualified tax professional or investment adviser to review realized gains, wash-sale implications and transaction costs before you trade. Do not let a tax bill force an allocation that is materially inconsistent with your risk plan, but do not ignore taxes when a small drift can be corrected with future contributions.

When the target allocation itself should change

Rebalancing assumes the target is still right. Revisit it when a major life or planning fact changes:

  • Your investment goal or spending date moves closer or farther away.
  • Your emergency savings, income stability or debt load changes your capacity to absorb a loss.
  • You discover that a previous allocation caused more stress than you can tolerate.
  • Your account structure, tax situation or available investment choices materially change.

Changing a target is a strategic decision. Once you select the new allocation, implement it deliberately and record the effective date. Do not describe a permanent change in risk as a routine rebalance.

Automated portfolios and target-date funds

Hands-off options can enforce an allocation without requiring you to calculate percentages. Target-date funds maintain a diversified mix and generally become more conservative as the target year approaches. Automated portfolio services also monitor and rebalance according to their program rules.

For example, Schwab states that its automated portfolios normally rebalance a few times per year and may rebalance more often in volatile periods. That behavior is the service’s operating policy, not a recommendation that every investor should trade more frequently. Before using an automated option, read its allocation methodology, tax-loss harvesting availability, account minimums, fees, restrictions and rules for deposits and withdrawals. Make sure its risk level matches your own plan; automation cannot correct an unsuitable target.

A step-by-step annual or quarterly process

  1. Confirm the plan. Read your investment policy statement and verify the target allocation, drift band, account types and review date.
  2. Recheck risk capacity. Note changes in goals, horizon, income, emergency reserves or tolerance for losses. If the plan changed, decide whether the target—not merely the weights—needs revision.
  3. Calculate current weights. Add the market value of each asset class, divide by the total portfolio value and record the percentage to a consistent level of precision.
  4. Compare with the band. Mark only the asset classes outside the pre-set range. Do not trade solely because a percentage moved a fraction of a point.
  5. Apply cash flows first. Route new contributions, dividends, interest and planned withdrawals toward correcting the largest underweight or overweight where practical.
  6. Estimate consequences. In taxable accounts, calculate gains, potential wash-sale issues and transaction costs. Check fund or plan restrictions before submitting orders.
  7. Place the smallest effective trades. Restore the portfolio to the target or to a documented point inside the band, rather than making unrelated changes.
  8. Record the result. Save the before-and-after percentages, transactions, tax estimates and next review date.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Trading because volatility feels uncomfortable

Problem: Headlines become an unplanned signal. Correction: Refer to the written date-and-band rule and trade only when its conditions are met or your circumstances changed.

Using a threshold without defining it

Problem: “Five percent” can mean five percentage points or 5% relative drift. Correction: Write the exact calculation and apply it to every asset class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring concentrated positions

Problem: Employer stock, a single fund or an unintended cash balance can dominate risk while broad categories appear on target. Correction: Include material holdings in the allocation review and set a separate concentration limit if needed.

Forgetting account location

Problem: The same sale has different tax effects in a taxable account and a retirement account. Correction: Decide which account can provide the adjustment most efficiently before selling.

Changing the target after every decline

Problem: A temporary loss is treated as proof that the long-term plan was wrong. Correction: Separate a documented life-change decision from a panic response to market prices.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Historical analyses of rebalancing frequency, thresholds, volatility and transaction costs can compare rules under stated assumptions. They cannot identify one interval that is optimal for every person or guarantee a particular return. The useful starting points are implementation choices—six or 12 months, an annual review and an illustrative five-percentage-point band—not performance promises.

For many investors, an annual review with a pre-set threshold and cash-flow-first execution is enough. Investors who want closer oversight can review quarterly without trading unless a band is breached. In both cases, the discipline is the same: set the allocation before the next crisis, measure it consistently and let the rule—not the emotion of the day—determine the action.
