One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere is no single greasing schedule for every firearm, and some models call for oil rather than grease. Follow the owner’s manual for your exact make and model: it identifies the lubricant, points and amount. Store the firearm unloaded and locked where children and unauthorized people cannot access it, and lock ammunition separately.
How often should you lubricate a firearm?
Use the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual. Firearm designs differ, so one model’s interval or lubrication points should not be applied to another. The manual may specify oil or another firearm lubricant rather than grease, and using too much can affect function.

One manufacturer’s schedule: GLOCK pistols
GLOCK advises cleaning and lubricating its pistols when new before first use, after each time they are fired, at least monthly while unused, and after exposure to rain, snow, perspiration, salt water, dirt or dust. GLOCK also warns that too much lubricant can affect pistol performance. These are GLOCK’s instructions for its pistols, not a universal firearm schedule. GLOCK: Caring for Your GLOCK

Adjust care after moisture or contamination
Exposure can call for attention even if the ordinary interval has not arrived. Henry Repeating Arms advises wiping exposed metal and applying a fresh film of oil after damp weather; soaking rain, snow or salt spray may require more thorough cleaning and oiling. Follow the care instructions for your firearm rather than transferring this advice to a different model. Henry Repeating Arms: The Original Henry Instruction Manual

Why “grease it” is not a complete instruction
Lubrication requirements depend on the firearm’s design. A manual may specify a particular lubricant and precise application points, or warn against lubricating a component. For example, the Springfield Armory Echelon manual directs owners to apply one drop to each side of the rear slide rails and says not to put oil or grease on the striker. That is a model-specific instruction, not a general recipe. Springfield Armory: Echelon Manual
Do not add lubricant to unspecified components or disassemble the firearm beyond the owner’s instructions. If you find wear, or the manual directs you to seek service, contact the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith.

How to store a firearm safely
Secure the firearm and ammunition separately
- Store the firearm unloaded in a locked, secure location inaccessible to children and unauthorized people.
- Lock ammunition in a separate secure location away from firearms. The ATF specifically advises keeping ammunition locked separately. ATF: Learn About Firearms Safety and Security
- Use a locking device as one layer of protection, not as a substitute for secure storage. Check the current storage requirements where you live; rules vary by location.
Ruger’s LCP II manual also advises unloaded, secure storage and use of the supplied locking device. This is guidance for that model; consult the manual for your firearm. Ruger: LCP II Owner’s Manual

Protect metal from moisture, and avoid cases or materials that retain it. Henry cautions against storing its firearm in moisture-absorbing fabric or leather. Its manual also says not to seal the barrel to keep out dust, because internal steel may be more prone to rust or corrosion. These are Henry’s instructions; follow the storage guidance for your own firearm. Henry Repeating Arms: The Original Henry Instruction Manual

Smith & Wesson recommends firearm-intended lubricating oil or preservative on the bore, chamber and internal surfaces, plus anti-rust oil on external parts, for its covered products. It says to clean the firearm before using it again. This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal treatment; use the exact instructions for your make and model. Follow the firearm’s manual and confirm that the bore is clear before firing. Oil, grease or other material obstructing even part of the bore can cause serious damage and injury or death, Ruger warns. Texas Parks & Wildlife also advises removing excess oil and grease before storing or shooting. Ruger: LCP II Owner’s Manual Texas Parks & Wildlife: Firearms Cleaning and Maintenance

- SLIP 2000 GUN LUBE: Recommended for use on rifles, pistols, revolvers, and shotguns. Use like a metal treatment putting a thin coat everywhere. After firing 500 - 1000 rounds, simply wipe your gun clean just using Gun Lube.
- LUBRICATES: This gun lubricant penetrates tight spaces within your firearm and goes where other oils typically can't. Contains a proprietary anti-wear property that minimizes metal-to-metal contact, reducing friction/wear, preserving critical parts.
- CLEANS: Will aid in the removal of built up dirt, lead, copper, carbon, corrosion particles and firing residues that can build up and become abrasive to both recoil and gas operated mechanisms.
- PROTECTS: Unlike other gun oils, it penetrates and bonds with metal forming an protective barrier. This long-lasting barrier keeps carbon, lead, copper and plastic wad from sticking and building up, and reduces your cleanup time.
- SPECIALY FORMULATED: 100% pure synthetic lubricant and formulated without any petroleum, Teflon (PTFE) or Silicone ingredients. It will never gum up, never become sticky or tacky and does not attract dust dirt or sand.
